Abandoned Kittens... help So yesterday my heart nearly broke in two... I was walking into my new building and I saw the cutest and most terrified little kittens, 3 of them. There was a grounds worker outside so I asked (for those of you who don't know me, I just moved into an apartment building on campus in Toronto) he said this time of year, a lot of cats get abandoned, and that someone was "keeping an eye on them." But honestly if someone was keeping an eye on them, then they'd probably not still be at large outside. So another student posted on our Facebook group that he saw them too, and they were scared of him. So I guess my question is what should I do? I can't take any in cause of Harley, he's an only dog, and the risk of bringing in a strange cat with Harley's health issues, it's just not a risk I'm willing to take. But what are the shelter protocols in Toronto? I don't want to report them and have them sent to a kill shelter or anything... but they really shouldn't be loose around our apartment, they need food, and most importantly they need to be spayed/neutered so that we don't get more kittens. Plus there is a really busy road on the other side of the courtyard where I saw them. Thoughts? |
If you cannot take them in do you know anyone else that can? If not, then you have to weigh the lesser of two evils. A shelter with a possible kill policy, or being left alone to fend for themselves against predators, elements, or traffic. If they are coming out where humans are, it is a sign they are hungry and scared and desperate and looking for momma and who knows what may have happened to her. I wish I was closer, I would take them in and care for them but I understand your concerns if Harley has other health issues. Good luc |
You need to get in contact with your local Humane Society. They can and will give you the best advice. They may be feral cats, which is not unusual anywhere. Perhaps theres a feral cat orgainization in your area, start googling. In the meantime here is a link for you to the Humane Society. Good luck, so sad I know. I can't pass anything up human or animal when I know somethings wrong, little defenseless kitties (although I'm allergic) really tug at my heart. The Toronto Humane Society Take care. |

1 Attachment(s) Did you end up taking these little guys in? Do you have any idea how old they are? I saw an ad on Craigslist yesterday where a lady found two kittens by the dumpster at her apartment complex and she needed help... So I of course drove over there and picked them up  I have taken in kittens before and know it's demanding while they are little, but they slowly get more independent and can eat on their own. These little guys are about 3 weeks old and I am bottle feeding them every 3-4 hours. I will find them forever homes when they get old enough. |

As far as the abandoned kittens, what about putting up a note on bulletins boards to see if anyone is interested? I know you are all students but they might have a family member or something? If you called the shelter, at least they would be fed and warm for the time being. Unfortunately, if it is like here, so many of the cats are never adopted out. :(:( |
