potty training a human baby
 

My daughter will be 2 soon, and is starting to be aware when she goes to the bathroom. She pulls on her diaper and says "totty" ( potty ). I was wondering if anyone has any tips on potty training. Know of any good training pants to make her more aware of when she is wet and soiled? Thank you in advance. My mother in law said to watch when she drinks and eats. Then about 15 minutes or so later, sit her on the toilet.

my daughter will be 3 January 28 th...still not potty trained :( She just refuses to go on the potty. I bought those plastic pants that you put over under wear. When she wets she knows what itll do but she will still pee in her pants...i dont know what to do either...i have tried bribing with Candy and everything..so your not alone in this potty issue. Well it's been a long time, but I hear pull ups work great.
When I was potty training our boys, I told them I would buy them
Superman underwear as soon as they went potty like big boys,
It worked! I guess the Superman underwear was really important to them.
Our Grandson is a year and a half old now, I wonder if that will work on him.

don't worry! both of your children are normal :)
here's what i've learned:
1. only children take longer
2. girls learn faster
3. boys aren't usually potty trained until 3-3 1/2
4. some kids are busy when they need to go and will go on themselves b/c they don't want to get up
5. my son hated his "potty" so i had to get a special seat that fit on the toilet
6. some kids will do one and not the other for a while
7. sometimes they will go really well and then have stages
8. if they are alllllmost potty trained and you have a baby, they may regress as they want to be the baby
9. some children like to sit backwards but i discouraged my son from this as it gets EvERywHEre
10. if you have a boy, put cheerios in the toilet for them to aim at. cheaper than "tinkle targets"
11. accidents are normal even in older children but if it happens consistently when they are around 5 you may want to see a dr.

I am not in a rush to do it, but I would love to know what to do when she gets ready! I guess we will just figure it out. Any tips on getting rid of a binky(pacifier)?

to get rid of a pacifier, i read you can cut off little bits at a time so they have less and less to actually suck.
when Raven was getting his teeth in he began to chew it so i threw it out. no problems.

Wow, I never thought of cutting bits off! I have tried to go cold turkey, but my husband caves in and gives it to her. I will start to cut bits off and see how it goes!

Get her a doll with some panties and let her "teach" the doll how to go potty. Tell her that she has to potty in her pot to show her doll how to do it and then praise, praise, praise the doll for going potty. Also there is a potty elmo, if she likes elmo, that you could use instead and he will drink and go to the potty in his own potty and claps and things. My sister-in-law had a little boy at 4 that still wasn't potty trained and my husband and I saw this on Dr. Phil. We told her about it and she tried it (with an elmo doll before the potty elmo came out) and low and behold in no time he was potty trained!

Go get a preemie pacifer. Its alot smaller, so she won't be able to keep it in her mouth. And when she finally gets tired of having to put it back in every 30 seconds, she probably won't want it anymore! Good luck!

i just put her down for her nap, I cut off a little of the binky, like just the tip. She knows it is different, but we will see. I have her down to only using it when she is in bed, or on really long car rides, but grandma got her a dvd set for the car, so maybe she wont want her binky anymore now that she will be entertained!

what about pull-ups? We used them and they worked for us.

I am gonna get some, they have those that let her feel when she is wet. I will see if they have her size, she is tiny. Will be 2 in march, and can still wear some 12 month clothes!

Pullups Savannah pees in them just like regular underwear because really there still a diaper...i quit using them there a waste of money but than again my child is like my dog a PITA hard head so..... :rolleyes: Savannah still has the bink also except during the day. she gets it right before she goes to sleep. They say you can take the bink and put it in vinegar for like 10 minutes and than everytime they suck on it(do it to all the binks) theyll get tired of it tasting yucky. I however have not used this technique because its gross tasting! :D So i guess my child will still be on the bink. Good luck though!

Definately read some books on different methods. My son was potty trained at 2 1/2 and he's an only child and I worked crazy shifts where sometimes my 8 hours would be during the morning, evening, or night.
1.)If she goes to a babysitter, have her do the same things you are, be consistant.
2.)I kind of put him through a potty training bootcamp. He only wore diapers at night and I tried not to leave the house very much. I had him run around with no diaper on for most of the day(It was a San Diego summer lol) This showed him what happens when he pees. And I would rush him to the potty whenever he started. He was very scared to pee in the toilet, it was very weird for him. He would make a mess, so I had him sit backwards and he really enjoyed watching himself pee into the toilet.
3.)Let her see you go to the potty. Explain to her that Mommy, daddy, brother, sister, aunt, big bird, whoever all go to the big potty and only babies go in their diapers.
4.)Praise and rewards. Give a big award and go nuts if she does it in the potty, even a little bit. Anything can be an award. A sticker, a toy, or a treat. I would give my son a buzz light year gummy if he went to the potty. He used to get so excited and "BUZZ LIGHTYEAR CANDY!!?" everytime after he went. It doesn't have to be candy though. If you do the bootcamp thing, a sip of a favorite drink is a great prize so she will go pee more. The reward system works great for this age. If anyone has ever taken a psycology class you would know that you can get any being to preform certain behaviors if they can recognize the relationship of the award of the task being preformed.
5.)Accidents happen, don't dwell on them or yell at the child. You can end up making the child very scared of going potty. If it is poop then pick it up and put it in the potty. Tell her where it goes. Let her flush it and say "bye bye" to it.
6.) There are great potty books and movies you can buy for her. Read these with her everytime you take her to sit on the potty. Don't let her sit very long.

I wish you the best of luck!!!! I have my niece here with me. I've had her since Feb and will probable have her till next sept. She just turned 3 and we are having a really tough time! It's been a strugle with her. My own kids were all trained by the age of 2. I have asked for help not too long ago and I don't remember who told me to reward her with money. A quater her a dime there,,, we keep all her money in a jar and she is saving up for a tirp to toys r us. It's helped some. She loves getting money, but we are still having accidents. I know she will do it in time but it can be frustrating! Much luck to you!!!

I agree with getting some books on potty training. My son wasn't trained until he was 3 1/2 but my daughter trained at 2. I used the pull ups with him and he didn't care if he went in them. With my daughter I was a little tougher and I just put her in regular cotton underwear. She hated being wet so she trained really fast! I know I'm not the norm but I never even used a potty seat.

I bought the little seat that goes on the big toilet. Sometimes I would just have them sit there for a little while and if they went I made a HUGE deal out of it!

I was so happy not to have to change diapers anymore but I'm still wiping butt! When do they wipe themselves? :D

Okay, so if I just put her in regular big girl underwear, do I just not put pants on her, so she doesn't ruin all her clothes? I might try that. I do stay home with her all day, so I could watch her.

yeah i am at home with my daughter all day too..i run a daycare so youd think that would help. My oldest one was sooo easy, she only pottied twice in her underwear and she was all the way trained. this youngest one is a totally different story. I put big girl underwear with the plastic pants and just dress her. It wont ruin her clothes if she wets, i mean you have more laundry to do but i think its still chepaer than buying pull ups that dont help or work anyways(well ig uess icant say that some ppl has had luck). kids just go at there own pace..mine however i think is a snail;! :( :D :D

When my son was a little over 3 it was time for preschool. Of course he needed to be wiping his own butt over there. I just cut him off and told him we're not going to do it for him anymore. We showed him how and showed him how much tp to use. Everyone once in a while he still yells, "Mommy, wipe my butt!" We just tell him, "No, you can do it yourself!" Then tell him you're proud of him.
I really believe that certain changes, like pacifiers, bottles, potty training, and butt wiping can all be changed at the right ages. If not, dental and other physical or mental problems can arise. The biggest part of it is the parent's ability to say, "No, you're too old for it." It has to stop cold turkey. If they cry and you give it to them, in a sense you are rewarding them for the bad behavior. So then they have actually learned if they cry they can get whatever they want. They are alot smarter than you'll ever know. Whenever the crying happens just think, "I WILL NOT reward you for bad behavior!"

they should be wiping by 4/5 definately. especially before they go to school! buuuuut, how well they do it? i have a friend who's brother was told "until the paper is clean." this kid goes thru mounds of toilet paper. mounds...

and for some guys, well, you've heard the rumors..

i also think that some parents teach their girls better than their boys b/c girls have all the folds and the front to back pattern. i like the wipes that flush but can't use them b/c my toilet gives them back the hard way. *sigh*

The only advise I can give you is, this is just my opinion. Don't use pull-ups of any kind except at night or when they are taking a nap or you are out running errands. I don't like them becuase they are just like diapers. Granted they may not be like that now becuase it has been 7 years since I did this. I put underwear on Ethan from the time I started potty training him that way he knew when he was wet or dirty. Granted I had lots to clean up but, in my opinion this is the only way to go.

I hope I didn't offend anyone like I said my opinion only. Good Luck in whichever way you decide to potty train you little one. Just like with the furbabies, consistency is key.

There is a book called "Potty Training in Less than a Day". I used it with both of my sons (they were almost three at the time) and it worked. We went from daipers to regular training pants in ONE DAY, we had absolutely no accidents and no bed wetting. I know it sounds way too hard to be true, but if you read the book and as silly as some of the things seem, DO EXACTLY WHAT THE BOOK SAYS, EXACTLY. Never used another diaper, and that was during a time when we were traveling back and forth between Colorado and Georgia and were on the road a lot.

The huge factor in successful potty training is timing. It is imperative that the child be both physically and emotionally ready.

ps. not only were my boys potty trained in less than one day, they ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL cleaned their own potty chair and NEVER EVER woke me up at night to help them (this last part kinda hurt my feelings a but, but my boys are very independent) LOL
