Possible thyroid surgery Im trying to gather all the info I can about thyroid surgery. If anyone can share with me their experiences I'd appreciate it. |
I didn't have surgery, but took 'The Pill' (forgot the name, but nuclear medicine to kill the thyroid). I had a multi nodular thyroid (Plummer's Syndrome). Now on thyroid replacement meds for life. (Not a biggie) |
Thanks for the reply. I have to meet with my doctor next week, I have several nodules they have followed, over the past two years with ultra sounds and biopsy. My doctor called with the most recent results Friday and is suggesting surgery. Glad to hear he meds is no biggie. |
Best Wishes.... I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers... |
Many members of my family have had thyroid surgery (including for thyroid cancer) and it was easy, then synthroid for the rest of their lives. Best wishes. |
Thanks for the replies. I go to the doctor tomorrow to discuss my options. Just a little nervous about it. |
I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck at the doctors tomorrow. |
Sending good thoughts your way! |
Thyroid Surgery Hi, I had thyroid surgery 12 years ago and have been on synthroid since that time. The biggest problem that I had with the surgery was the fatigue afterwards. I thought I would never get my energy back. I eventually did but I really was draggy for a long time. Since then the only problem has been getting my dosage right. I think mine has been changed almost every six months. It is either too low or too high. Yuck. The surgery in itself wasnt any worse than most surgeries. Good luck. Julia |
Thanks everyone. Thanks Julia for input on your experience. Today I had a consult with my endocrinologist. She is sending me to a surgeon for removal. The right side and center is coming out. She is going to let the surgeon decide on if the left side will be removed. So I'll know more after meeting with the surgeon. Thanks for all the tthoughts and prayers. It means a lot to me. |
My husband got his thyroid removed about twenty years ago. He had a pre-cancerous tumor on it. The doctors (we had a second-opinion) recommended a complete removal for fear that the tumor will grow back. He's been on synthroid ever since (and for the rest of his life). My husband recovered from the surgery fine, and he has a clean bill of health. Again, the tumor was pre-cancerous. It never became malignant (but it would have been if it was left in his body). |

Thankfully, the doctor insisted on a biopsy. You know the rest of the story. Good luck with your appointment with the surgeon this Thursday. |
I had two good size nodules that we watched for several years. I had them needle biopsied 5 years before my surgery and they were fine. Then the nodules seemed to grow, so I had them removed. She took half my thyroid and only two parathyroids, so I take no medicine. My surgeon took enough of my thyroid so that I would not have to repeat a surgery if the nodules came back cancerous(which they did not):). My biggest complaint was that my throat was sore for a good 10 days and I had no voice. I was very hoarse for a good week. I still have a little scar but it's not two bad. Good luck...if you have questions just pm me. |
