Patti and Jack treated unfairly Patti has been taking care of Jack 24/7 for the last few years since his severe head injury. She is so loyal to him and any of you that have been a care taker, know what a tough job that is. Patti cannot go anywhere without taking Jack...loading his wheel chair into the car and getting it out at each stop. Life is such a struggle for her. When he has to go to the bathroom, wherever they are, she has to make sure the Ladies Room is empty and then take him in. Patti went into Macy's the other day as she is in desperate need for new clothes since she has lost so much weight. She found some things to try on and took Jack (in his wheel chair) into the Ladies handicapped dressing room to try the things on. She heard a commotion outside the door and opened it to find the sales clerk telling her she could not have Jack in there with her. She explained that she has to take him in wherever she goes because he has a severe head injury and has to be watched. The sales clerk once again said that he is not allowed in there. Patti left the dressing room and asked to talk to a manager. The manager told her it is not allowed and that she could take Jack into the "His/Her" bathroom and try them on in there! Good grief...who wants to go into a bathroom and try on clothes! I just could not believe they could not break the rule and let Patti try on the clothes. She told them she will be bringing back purchases she recently made and closing her account. She was in tears. Gosh...whatever came of compassion? Anyone who sees Jack can see that he has problems. I feel so bad for Patti...who could surely use a break. I went to Macy's site and wrote to them, telling them of what happened and my thoughts on it. Patti gave me her okay to start this thread, and I thought that maybe, if you have time, you could also write Macy's. Here is the link to their contact info: Customer Service - Contact us - Tell us what you think - Macy's Patti says she is also going to contact the American Disability Act to report this to them. |
My gosh! ADA needs to have an exception in that rule for a caregiver with a patient clearly confined to a wheelchair or stretcher. Perhaps she could ask her U. S. Senator to start the process for adding an amendment for that to the ADA. |
I forgot to give the info on which Macy's this was...it was in California in Antelope Valley. |
I feel so bad for Patti it is not easy to take care of some one who is disabled. What was he hurting? some people are so Ignorant, I for one will be writing to Macy's. Tell her to keep her chin up she doe's have people on YT who care. Huggs to Patti she is a amazing person.:animal-pa:ghug: To Patti from your Yorkie friend's Anne/Luci |
If I were you I'd contact Macy's corporate and get that policy in writing. Seems a bit odd to me. What's even odder, is now they are letting men use the ladies fitting rooms! |
Oh my, I'm so sorry for sweet Patti...she really does need a breaK. I would never buy from them again! I agee, she needs to corporate and get the written policy. How heartless of these to workers, the sales person could have made the exception...no doubt in my mind. |
I suppose some other shopper would be offended to have a man in the dressing room. Although for me, I would think it's obvious Jack would not be your average male in a dressing room. To me, it's no different than mother's with their young boys in women's dressing rooms - sometimes you have no choice. I did write Macy's from the link you provided. It's all okay for a surgically altered male to enter the Miss Universe contest, but not okay for a handicap gentleman to be inside a ladies private dressing room? Who makes these rules? |
Poor Patti and Jack! The Macy's employees should have had some sense. If they were afraid of other customers being offended, they should have blocked off the entire dressing room for Patti to use. Putting her in the bathroom is unacceptable. Thank you Connie for sharing this sad news. I am going to write to Macy's. |

Store manager or sales person probably so afraid of somehow somebody complaining about poor Jack being there, they missed the point of a customer badly in need of a little help from the store & any potential other customers right then. I'm sure every one of them would have gladly waited if they had been so worried about having him in there! His presence sure wouldn't have bothered me or most women, I am certain. |
That is terrible! I think she should file a suit against them. I just can not believe people these days. |
Transgender men are now allowed the use of women's restrooms, however Macy's won't allow a woman to use their dressing room because of an obvious reason due to a disability is an outrage! Macy's has been added to my boycott list. |
I have a disabled child who is about to turn 20. I have to take him into ladies dressing rooms and ladies bathrooms with me all the time. I have NEVER been told he could not be in there. I will gladly send them my opinion of the situation. As I totally understand how Patti feels. Obviously this company don't need our business if they are going to be like that! I am so sorry Patti is dealing with this. I hope she is able to contact the proper people. |
Oh. I am mad! Poor patti.. I am writing to Macy now! |
I can't believe Patti and Jack were treated so badly. I will send a complaint to Macy's too. Patti has had such a hard time taking care of Jack all by herself with no help at all. What ever happened to having some compassion for one another. |
How horrible. I am a big customer at Macy's (just purchased several thousands of dollars worth of furniture)... I will be writing them to express my opinion. Not acceptable. |
The sales people could have bent the rules and make an exception. It seems today, people have no compassion or empathy for anyone. Shame on you, Macy's. |
This is unacceptable behavior. I will also write to Macys. Patti needs to go up to the top with this...corporate headquarters. She should demand the written policy that addresses this particular issue, so that it can be forwarded to her congressman, as well as her attorney, for review with regard to compliance with the ADA. If I had been Patti, I would have told them to kiss my a$$ and I would have finished what I was doing...let them call security and make a HUGE scene! I am sure the other customers would have appreciated seeing how callous and uncompassionate they were being. And I would never spend one more cent in that store again! |
Sent an email regarding my outrage. Also talked with ADA. Have an appt to talk with the management at my local Macy's. In general I've found them in the past to be pretty open - had one service dog issue that was quickly and efficiently resolved. This is beyond any reaonsable thinking. I am wondering if another customer complained, and if the complaint was validated? So sorry Patti & Jack. |
I just received an email from Oriana Wagoner, store manager for Macy's Antelope Valley store. She writes she attempted to call and my phone was out of service (it wasn't) and asked I return her call as she very much so wanted to discuss this situation with me. I've called her back and she is now "out to lunch", left a message to return my call. Any one else that would like to call here's the info: Oriana Wagoner 661-456-3333 ext 4100 She'll be there until 5pm today. I'll update on our conversation afterwards. Connie, it might help if I had the day and time Patti and Jack were at the store. Although, it shouldn't be to hard for their staff to recollect....I'm sure they don't kick customers with disabled husbands out of their dressing rooms everyday:rolleyes: |
That's just awful:( I understand that they don't want men in the ladies fitting rooms, okay. But Jack is in a wheelchair and obviously needs to be cared for. It's not like he was in there peeping into other fitting rooms, geez:rolleyes: I am going to write to Macy's as well. I ordinarily buy most of my clothing from there, but will not any more unless they issue a formal, written apology to Patti and Jack and maybe compensate them in some way. Until then, I will forgo my local Macy's:mad: |
Connie, could you please call Oriana at the number I posted above. I didn't have any contact info for Patti and Oriana would like to speak to her and have the opportunity to apologize and attempt to make this right for Patti and Jack. I told her I would get the contact info and email it to her, but if you could call that might be even better. Btw....she did tell me mine was not the ONLY email she had received. I told her I didn't think it would be and that she most likely would be getting more, as we're a group that is very protective of our Patti. |

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thum bup: Good job, everyone:) I think they got the message:D I hope that they sincerely apologize and maybe even gift Patti and Jack with a nice fat gift card for their troubles. I would think that they would make special accommodations for folks with disabilities! I bet they will NOW:D |
You are talking about employees who have a handbook and probably think they have NO say in the company policies. From what I understand about Macys they are a great company to work for and take care of their employees. Patti's situation may be one they have never come across before and they did not know how to handle it. Its too bad though. Poor Patti, I wish she had someone to help her with Jack. That is such a heavy burden on her, although I'm sure she's all too happy to be his caretaker, there are basic needs she has. How terribly sad. I wish I was nearer to her, I'd be glad to help her out in any way possible. I really wish our country took care of the people who really need it more. Free assistance to those who truly need it and paid taxes their whole lives. I'm sure Patti could use 3-5 hours a week to HERSELF to do the things she needs to do. :( |
That makes me so sad. I feel so sorry that Patti was treated so badly. I don't understand why people don't try harder to accomodate someone. |

I didn't see this in time to call Oriana today and tomorrow I work my fill-in job from 8-5, so I will PM you with Patti's phone number and would appreciate it if you could pass it on to her. Patti said she doesn't even want to talk to her and I told her she should give her a chance to make amends. Patti did call corporate today and talked to the secretary of the highest up person there...she said he was the owner of Macy's and she couldn't get any higher than that. I think she will be hearing back from that person. Patti said she has never been so humiliated as she was that day and that poor Jack was so upset he was shaking. Oh...I almost forgot...this happened on Saturday the 14th at about noon. Let me know if you can't pass on the info and I can try to do it on my noon hour. Patti will try to get on here later tonight, so hopefully you will see a post from her and I know she will be so touched by all the love and support! |

Thank You All Connie you are such a dear and precious friend. Your kindness and that of everyone is appreciated by Jack and myself. I did call the Corporate Office in Ohio. I would think that the local store has heard from them by now, I hope so. I only learnt later today that Macy's allows transgenders ( cross dressers) to use any dressing room they so choose, IS THIS REALLY, REALLY TRUE? I am saddened by this happening to us and very, very humiliated. I have no desire whatsoever to shop with Macy's any more. This should never have happened to us. Thank you all for expressing your concerns to Macy's through whatever means you did, not only on behalf of Jack and myself but on behalf of all others that are disabled and their caregivers. Your messages here really touched my heart, I am proud that Jack and I are members of a wonderful group. Sorry for being slow in posting, This incident has left me feeling rather down, and kinda speechless. Hugs from us both, Patti and Jack |

I just called Macy's corporate to complain. I said she was a friend of the family. I said she was beside herself too and she just told me about it. I gave the store location and other info. you listed, too. This is outrageous. Boycotting them and passing the word on. |
