okay... I am going to completely DISAGREE! Pit bulls like few here have said are good dogs like anything else....it depends on the owner. I own a pitbull and a yorkie and soon another yorkie"maddy" and they are fine .. I also have a mini schnauzer "mia" and a cocker spaniel "daisy"... My little peanut is a RED NOSE PITBULL and he is the SWEETEST thing, but I RAISED him..... he knows how to shake your hand hi, rolls over, plays dead, sits and fetches... It really bothers me how there are people out there that are very IGNORANT about this breed! I mean how can you say something about a breed you have NEVER had! That's why we get mad because "other non-yorkie owning people" say ignorant things about these babies without having them. And yes if you have never had one or raised one you are in NO PLACE to say anything in retrospect to this breed.... If I have never owned a corvette , why would I give my opinion on how it runs, drives and costly it is to repair it? RED HONEY..... your fiancee has a point.. if you raise them together they will get along better. It's such a cute picture seeing a BIG dog with a LITTLE one get along and play. Dogs are a very smart breed. They will act and behave as what you have raised them on. My pitbull is soo loving and very protective of me to make sure no one harms me.... I KNOW he would give his life to save mine as would I .... so please don't let other people's bad experiences influence your decision. This is something you and your fiancee need to agree amongst each other. Good luck!! |

Actually , we have 3 at the shelter . Those dogs aren't making trouble at all . There is one that is so lonely and crying his heart out . The girls here were afraid to go see them , they gave me their places . Funny , I went and came out in one piece . The major problems don't come from the dog only . |
JUDY PLEASE!!!!!! :thumbdown Quote:

Seriously, without saying a word one way or the other about Pit Bulls, I would not combine a large dog and a Yorkie. I especially wouldn't do it if your Yorkie is on the small side. They are just too fragile. This would be a "deal breaker" for me. |

I also think that you hear about so many pit bull attacks because the media knows that what will cause the most stir... Another problem is the victims, police, media.... can not properly identify the breed attacking and too many people who see any short haired medium sized dog think it is a pitbull. I own a boxer and many if not most people I see on our walks mistake her for a pit bull almost daily. Here is a link that talks about the misleading and incorrect information the media has reported on pit bull attacks. Please read as it is informative. http://ncrf2004.tripod.com/id9.html Here is a quote from the article Quote: Another serious problem with the image of Pit Bulls is the over-reporting of Pit Bull attacks vs. other breed attacks. Unquestionably, a disporportionate amount of media attention is given to Pit Bull attacks. One example of this is a recent fatal attack in Detroit by a Pit Bull. This story ran in over 30 separate national newspapers and was also picked up by FOX news, CNN and two British newspapers. Two weeks earlier a man was killed by his German Shepherd Dog and this story ran only in the local community newspaper. |

WTG! For stickin to your guns!  |
Boring to death . |
REDHONEY- We had a pit thread a few months back and I made the "jaw-lock" arguement and was RUDELY told by another member that that was an ignorant statement. I did research this a bit more and found out that it is a myth because their jaws are actually structured the same as any other breed. This is a very common misconception, though. I applaud you for sticking to your guns. We hear all the time about breeding for the correct temperment, and there is just no guarentee that the breeder from who you (or your bf) buys the dog is going to be as concerned with this as necessary. Not to mention the breeder from who he/she got the dogs parents... etc. I would say keep the guy, and just have him pick another breed. It's great that he's dropped the pit idea. I've heard only great things about boxers. The holidays are coming up- if you get him a puppy you're giving him what he wants and still in control of the type of dog. I know they say live-animal gifts aren't a good idea, but if you live together, it's your dog, too. Good luck in the puppy/breed search!! |

If you do not want a large dog that can bite and cause damage...get a FAKE dog. Any breed of dogs CAN bite...and pitbulls are NOT the only breed used in fight!! And so most of you know, a rott has a stronger bite than a pit and before the media focussed their horror stories on pits, it was on the rotts and dobermans...so do REAL research with people who breed and really work with the breed, whatever breed you choose to have, be it a pit, boxer or even a lab! And remember, even Labs do bite and attack! |

This is horrible, but I absolutly hate pitbulls...I know that they have a bad rap or whatever, but anything that can exert that much force in a bite well it is not for me...What makes me feel bad about this is that, whenever I see a pit with its owner at the dog park, on he street, anywhere, I immediately pick up my Bruce and get as far away as possible. I used to believe that pits were as good as any dog, but then there was a particularly vicious attack on another little dog here at one of our dog parks...While making their way to the small/shy dog area a lady and her husband were casually walking when a beautiful brindle pit that had been playing ball nicely with its owners spotted the female dog bounded over and clamped down on the dog, picked it up and just shook the life out of it without letting go for a second...The other little dog did not even have time to make a sound. It took the boyfriend of the small dog owner jumping on the dogs back and wrestling it to the ground (who got a minor bite in the end as well), the pit's owner trying to pry its mouth open, and a bystander beating the pit with one of those chuck it dog things to get the little girl out of the pits jaws. What happened in the end is animal control came and seized the dog, the little one was obviously dead, and two sets of owners were devestated. The pit had never apparently been aggressive before, and I stand by my opinion that pits are just not for me. Pits are just sooo strong for their size, they posses superior athletic ability, and their jaws do not lock but exert more pounds of preassure than those of many other breeds. Love your pit if you have one, but Bruce and I will respectfull stay away! |
I know that many dogs have a bad rap, because they get more media attention... I did not know that other dogs were used in dog fights, thank you for correcting me (whomever did, I am older now, and having memory problems- lol) I did want to reply to what we have experienced next door... where there was a pitbull and a pitbull/something (a pit mix) anyways, the pitbull herself seemed nice, she didn't try jump the fence, or try and bite my dog through the fence, but the pit mix did... I could not let my dogs run in the yard, when these dogs were out (which was most of the day) sometimes I would knock on their door to have their dogs come in so mine could play. The mix dog would ram herself into the fence (wood privacy fence) she would try jump it, and would stick her nose/mouth under the fence and did manage to bite my yorkie on the nose, but didn't get a good grip so I got my dog away.... this happened when I had asked them to put their dogs in so mine could run- within five minutes they let their dogs out. None of us were able to walk on that side of the house, because the fear we had of this dog... thankfully they moved out. So there is proof for me anyways, that all dogs are different, even pits. |
