What did you want to be when you grew up?
 

Its always interesting to see what everyone wanted to be when they were little.

The first job I ever said I wanted to be was a vet.

Then it was a ballerina, a pediatric surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a wedding planner, a wedding cake decorator, and finally a music teacher, which I went to college for until recently. I'm now trying to figure out what I really want to do with my life, and I think my four year old self had the right answer. A Vet.

I wanted to be a Sportscaster. My first passion aside from Yorkies and being a Mommy is sports. You will never be in our house and there isn't sports on. We are currently watching the NBA playoffs. My first love is Football but I love Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer you name it. I majored in communications and worked in Sports radio for awhile. I am a total sports junky and my husband is just fine with it;)

People would always say "that's not a real job" but it's what I wanted to do.

I kind of got to be one as a surrogate.

OK, I admit it: A fireman.

Closest I came was a high school report, where I spent a day at the fire department and wrote about it.

In college, I wanted to be a photojournalist. I spent some time as a writer and photographer and ended up as a career copy editor for newspapers.

I still dream of doing something with photography. Maybe in retirement ...

I wanted to be an artist, and then a journalist or author.
In high school I got involved in a program at the local vocational school, and that's when I became certain I wanted to be a teacher. I love what I do, and I can't even imagine doing anything else. :)

In middle school I wanted to be a home economics teacher (now called family and consumer science)... I went to university and received my science degree with a minor in education for...... Home ec.. Then I got a job in banking. The thing with home economics each school district only hires a few.. Not too many job openings.

Well..In my early 30's I, after moving to Miami (remember I grew up in a small southern town) I got a position teaching in a inter city high school. So I fulfilled what my 13 year old self wanted. It was not the dream job ..very hard..but I am still teaching 25 year latter. I am now teaching in a better region and I am teaching middle school. I have had students tell me they want to do what I do. The sad thing is education is changing ...with all the test I just don't know the future of electives. I am also certified to teach science and reading.


Now my dd....they are 25 and still don't know what they want to be..so different then I was.lol

I say desiring what you want at such a young age and being focused as I was limits Other options..the research now states young people will change jobs and careers often (can't remember the percentage) it is not like your parents time at all. That can be good...you can experience so much more.

Ahh....the fireman thing made me smile. My lil' sis always wanted to marry a fireman, then Ricky Ricardo. She didn't, instead married twice, both times to cheaters....but her son did just recently became a firefighter for a suburb of Dallas. If she couldn't marry one, having a son be one is the next best thing:)

I always wanted to be a lawyer. And, my Mom always said I would be a darn good one too, with the way I liked to argue:D I still say I just spoke up for what I thought wasn't right and still do.:cool:

I remember now. My first love was art. And I always wanted a horse for Christmas. When my Dad took me to the races (at 13), when I saw the horses running down the home stretch, I had a premonition that I would be a jockey one day. My first job out of high school was at a gas station, where a horse trainer happened to come in to buy gas... and offered me a job at Pimlico. I worked at the East Coast tracks, mostly Maryland, Delaware Park, the Meadowlands in NJ, and Charlestown, WV till I was 28, never got a break to ride in a race. I worked at Sagamore Farm and Polinger Farm Corp. breaking yearlings and 2 year olds. In 1976 I was thrown from a horse and broke my back. Healed up and went back to riding. Had to give up that dream bc I was getting too old...

So I went to college and worked at a few Data Processing companies and majored in Computer Sciences. Then I met DH and quit school and work to take care of his children (one is Special Needs)... just took local jobs to help out. I worked at a Plant Nursery growing azaleas, then went to work for a few vets. I went back to college part time, changed majors to biological sciences, but all the programs I looked into were for full time day students. Took a job at a snake breeding facility (Albino Boa Constrictors)... that was my last job. Then I had surgery on my back. Now turning back to more artistic endeavors.... lol.

Journalist but I ended up being an insurance agent

I wanted to be a vet for a long time but when I got older my mom said you know that means you have to put some animals to sleep and I just could not do that no matter how much it would end there suffering it just would be so hard one me. Then I wanted to do something with kids but as my anxiety got worse it turned back to animals. I just trust them so much more then people. A dog never stops loving you and forgives you and doesn't judge you and people just are not like that. But I am very allergic to cats to that also means I couldn't be a vet. I still have no idea what I wanna do.

Wanted to be a registered nurse. Didn't do that due to some of the patient cleaning & shall we say other things one has to do during training, etc., & possibly after in the way of cleaning up after the bedridden patient that I figured out my stomach probably wouldn't agree with so I just always worked for Orthopedic Surgeons. Even though they told me R. N.'s didn't have to do much of that after school & internship, I didn't entirely believe it!

First it was a Veterinarian, than a Beautician and than a Photographer !

Well I am none of those things.... never made it to college and now I am a stay at home mother and child care provider. I do cut hair thou, been cutting my DH's and kids for the past 20 sum yrs.

I wanted to be an architect. Then an artist, of what type I didn't know. My uncle saw potential in me and talked to me about going into fashion, so I went to school to study fashion design and patternmaking. I also got a degree in graphic design, as I thought it would be a good skill to have. Come to find out I like to do things the old school way, and computer programs change too quickly LOL. I haven't kept up with the times on that front.

I did work in fashion for a few years and quickly learned it was not glamorous or creative working for someone else's label. It's basically the same as an office job with office politics, but with lots more gossip. So I quit that and bf and I opened out own shop. At first it was a clothing boutique and when the economy tanked so did we. During that time I was able to do my own thing with custom made costumes, which I really love costume design, and became quite busy which really make me happy.

Now we own a bike shop, and believe it or not, I get to be creative at this job, get to work with my hands, and not have to deal with office politics. :D

I still would like to continue my costumes someday again if I get a place with enough space. Or working in film or tv for costuming would be a dream of mine.

I am pretty sure I wanted to be a vet at some point. But I wanted to be a singer/songwriter the longest.... so much for that!

I wanted to be a prima ballerina with the American Ballet Theater, or an Olympic gymnast like Nadia Comaneci. Those dreams were crushed when I learned in classes that I was too tall, too gangly, and had little coordination. :D

I wanted to be a teacher when I was young. Then I went to college and decided I wanted to be a child psychologist. Then changed my mine and went into nursing. Guess what I ended up being, yep a teacher!!

I wanted to be a doctor from the time I was very little- for the longest time I was set on being a neurosurgeon- not even sure where I came up with that. At some point in high school I decided I really didnt like blood very much and being a surgeon probably wouldnt work out so well, ha! I ended up being a lawyer instead- now I really want to own a dog store.

I wanted to be a Vet! I developed a lot of allergies and back then there wasn't the allergy meds we have now so....I'm a bookkeeper instead but still wish I could be a vet....

Yeah in my family, you had to be a doctor or a lawyer, and graduate from UCLA or USC, otherwise you were a complete and utter disgrace and embarrassment to the family. :rolleyes: No one became a doctor or lawyer.

I wanted to be a horse. Yes, you read that right....what can I say....I had an adoration for horses and everything about them. Then I wanted to be a cowboy....who of course, had a horse!!! Then I settled on being a vet from the time I was around three to four years old...held onto that decision until my second semister in vet school and decided I was toooooo homesick away from home and my mother and my brother, both of whom I adored, so I quit and came home. Went to nursing school because my mother told me nurses and morticians would never have to worry about getting a job!!! As always, my momma was right.....but my motive was I had promised my mother I would never put her into a nursing home, I would take care of her....and God allowed me the priviledge to be able to care for momma in our home when she became ill. I often thank Him for that...it was such an honor and priviledge to care for the precious woman that was sooooooooooo good, sooooooo smart, sooooooooooo deciplined and determined to produce educated, caring, responsible, accountable, productive adults that could go forward and give back to this country, society, and our own children and families. So this horse gladly took care of her momma.......

Hmmm. I wanted to be a teacher... I had a chalk board in my play room, and a desk and I'd teach math to my teddies.... I also wanted to be an artist, I remember fighting for that card in the game of life, but I totally am artistically challenged.

My mom told me I'd be a good lawyer, following Jim Carey's movie I told mom I didn't want to be a Liar.. lol

I for a while in high school was going to be a grand-prix show jumper, or a vet (but I passed out at the sight of blood when we did a tooth extraction from one of my horses), but gave up on that when I went to business school. I did actually get to teach, just not math. I've been a teaching assistant for two years, and almost pursued a PHD.

However, mom won... I'm going to law school in september... I love the law.

I wanted to be a model...I'm 5'8" tall and at the time 120lbs really skinny! Helena Fulture models found me walking downtown Toronto, and said come in. Well I had to come up with 1000.00 for a portfolio, which i would have bc i was working part-time. Well daddy found out i would be modelling Lingerie...that was the end of that. I believe he said something like "no child of mine is walking around in drawers in front of a bunch of dirty old men"! Lol! Oh well...I became a hairstylist, got pregnant with my daughter and found out there was no way i could support myself and a baby on a hairstylist salary, so I went back to school.
I became a legal assistant...that lasted all of two months...the lawyer I worked for said something degrading to me and my mouth started moving before my brain had a chance to say shut up.
By this time i was single mom to now three kids, I drove school bus to raise my kids.
When my youngest turned 6 and was in school full time i applied for the TTC as a driver...I've been a driver for 15yrs now and i absolutly hate it!! LOL! What can i say the youngest is in university, the middle is startin college in September and I have a mortgage to pay!So when I retire in 6yrs, I will probably go back to a dream I had long ago and open a bed and breakfast, in the country and raise my yorkies! Not breed them just love them, my dream is to own at least 4!

I just wanted to be famous, lol. I loved to sing and dance. But then I finally realized that I have absolutely no singing talent. So then I wanted to be a fashion designer and I still do. That or be a reporter like on E! News..pretty much anything that will get me to talk about my two favorite things: fashion and celebrities. But since big dreams won't pay the bills I am in nursing school. I love babies so want to be a Labor and Delivery nurse. Not as glamorous as a fashion designer, but maybe I'll be that in my next life...

I wanted to be a mon. I know many would say that's not a real job but I think it is. I always have wanted 3-4 kids, but so far that hasn't happened. In high school, I wanted to be a trauma surgeon. I loved that show life in the er. Then I graduated and decided I wanted to be a teacher like my mom. I got my associates in that and then when I started course work I realized it was not for me. Then I got into nursing school. I made straight a's and enjoyed the coursework but when I got to clinicals, I despised it. We were always put with the people who were dnr (do not resussitate) and it broke my heart. Of course I knew in real life that wouldn't always be the case so I kept at it a while longer. Then we moved to PA suddenly and I took a semester off. Here we are 5 years later and I still haven't started back. My heart is just not in it. I love cooking, cleaning, sewing, decorating, organizing, and taking care of my family. Everyone says I should go back to be a home economics teacher. But for now I just enjoy being a plain old housewife. I know many do not think of it as a job but I work really hard despite the fact I do not have a 9-5 regular job. I am pushing 30 here in a couple years and I worry at times I'll regret my choices but we live and learn I guess. So right now all I want to be is a mom. I would give anything to have a child of my own! If its not meant to be, Kati's Scarlett will be getting a sibling. ;)

I wanted to sew professionally and teach sewing,,I get to do this.
I wanted to design costumes and clothing,,I do this.
I wanted to be a stay at home mom,,I have gotten to do this as well as homeschool our 6 kids and see most of them move on to college.
My dad said that I had to have a degree in computer science and I do. Before we had children I worked on the big mainframe computers and maintained network systems (this was when you still had to run coax all over a building).

I feel very blessed to of been able to do the things that I love.

Lol great timing on this thread! My bridesmaids threw me a bridal shower this past weekend. The morning of, my best friend came over and asked a bunch of random questions, including what I want to be when I grow up! Well, I'm almost 28 and have a good career, so I just said the same thing I do now! Well, at the shower, everyone had to fill out these questionnaires and they got points for each answer they got right. But it was more interesting than just that.... it turns out my best friend had surveyed all of her friends back in 1999 (we were 14-15 years old) and I had answered the same questions back then!!!! Oh boy!!! Guess what I wanted to be when I grew up, in 1999??? "Josh Hartnett's wife" hahahahahaha! It was so funny!!! She handed me a photo of him from an old teen magazine lol!!!

But really, as long as I remember I always wanted to be a vet. When I actually got to college age, I decided I wanted to be a Pharmacist. Seeing how hard it was to get into Pharmacy after taking one year of pre-requisites, I went into something I could apply to directly and get in - Engineering. And this is what I do now! It's a far cry from a vet, but at least I have my doggies at home to play with!
