Missing boy mauled to death ... This is a very sad story for both the boy's family as well as the owner of the pitbull (who mauled him). Unfortunately the little guy wandered into the neighbor's yard where the dog was chained. An important reminder for adults to teach young children to be careful around pets. Well he kept dogs outside chained up. For guard and protect? IDK. But if so, then I don't know the law in Texas, but surely he should have had a fence up and locked and posted beware of guard dogs. For surely if he had done that, no 4 yr old child would have been able to wander into the backyard. I believe that the owner is at fault 100%, followed by parents. And now I go out on a limb. If the boy had a history of roaming away, why was he unsupervised outside? He was only 4 years old. And in this circumstance it could have been any breed of dog, kept chained up outside in the backyard. Most dogs are capable of killing a 4yr old child, that meaning they have the teeth and the strength much greater than a 4yrold. |

In Florida if you have a pool and a neighborhood child wanders into your property and drowns you could be "at fault" ..that is the law. The law also states you have to have either a locked fence or a screened in pool cage or (to the best of my knowledge) you will be fined or not get a permit for the pool. So is the owner at fault ? I think the law was just trying to prevent deaths. idk |

I would have to know how secure the area where the dog was kept to say if the parents are 100 % at fault. As dog owners we are responsile for keeping our dogs under control at all times. |
People used to have guard dogs all the time. Now I guess that is not okay anymore, as part of sissyfying our society. I knew not to mess with big dogs when I was a kid, even though at times I was stupid and still did. |
As someone said, either way you look at the situation it is sad -- for the boy's family and the dog's owner. I think the article said the dog was chained and the yard fenced so it appears the dog's owner took precaution. At the same time this 4 yr old has a "history of wandering off". He was outside while the dad was doing chores and he wandered off -- if the father knows his child has a habit of disappearing why the wasn't the kid "leashed to him"? I feel badly for everyone involved... |

Oh, how sad; how sad. I cannot imagine the guilt the parents must feel and the dog owner who found the boy in his yard. As a pool owner, my worst fear was walking outside and finding a child face down in my pool and I had a 6 foot privacy fence. I imagine this dog owner feels just as badly. Just a terrible shame. |
Gosh, I thought it would be illegal to chain dogs in these so-called enlightened times! Poor little boy - I cannot imagine what he went through. It is unthinkable. |
We have a jurisdiction near us where it is illegal to have a dog chained to a leash tethered to a post in the ground. You can't win. |
