***Warning! Pop-open top cans can explode when opened!*** Hadn't had Chef Boyardee Ravioli since the 1970's I think, so I recently bought some and yesterday started to pop the tab to the easy-open top when there was a terribly loud sound of concussion and the can exploded right in my face! The top apparently shot right by my face so fast I never saw it but I sure felt the burst of air accompanying it - and in an instant my face and chest, arms and surrounding kitchen cabinets were covered in much of the contents of the can. I stood there stunned for a couple of moments, afraid to open my eyes, which I didn't know I'd closed, but I felt a huge blob of something wet on the closed lid of the left one - and wetness on the rest of my face. I prayed it wasn't blood - and thank God, it wasn't - only part of the little pies. I found the lid clear across the kitchen where it had flown from the power of the blast. Tomato sauce and pieces of little pies had gotten into my hair and all over my clothing and clean up took forever! From now on, I think I will be extremely cautious when I open one of those pop-top, easy-open cans. I can't help but wonder, if I'd had that can slightly tilted toward my face when I opened it, if that sharp-edged lid wouldn't have torn right into it or an eye! |
My God! So glad you are ok and thank you for making us aware of this. I will be sure to point any cans like that facing away from now on. |
I think I'm going to point mine toward the sink from now on! That way the clean-up may be somewhat easier! I thought I would NEVER get all that tomato sauce off all the surfaces it was splattered all over. Getting those stains out of my clothing took forever, too! |
It sounds as though it may be expired. Do you still have the can ? If so I would check the date on it as cans swell when they expire. I use these for my daycare kids once a wk & have never had a problem but I always check the tops of any can for a popped top or swollen top as this is a sign that there is a problem with the contents. So glad you were not injured. |
 I'm glad you were not hurt! Very scary experience. |
Wasn't expired unless the date on the can was wrong. I never open with the intent of serving nor buy canned food without an expiration date of at least one year from the current date. |
I've heard that exploding cans can mean the contents had spoiled, and botulism may be present. I'd definitely let the company know about it and if you can read them the lot number let them know that too. |
Oh my goodness!! My DS takes those cans to work for his lunch a couple of times a month. I will have to warn him, he is like me if it can happen to anyone, it will happen to him or me. So thankful you weren't injured and I would sure be notifying the company. We found a hair () in the inside of the crust of a Digiorno pizza once. It almost made us sick just thinking about it. I called the company and of course they apologized profusely and sent us coupons for 3 free pizzas. I have to admit it was a while before we could eat one again. |
That could have had a terrible ending....thank goodness you escaped any kind of injury! I am certainly going to be much more cautious.....and I will be opening pop top lids with a dishtowel thrown over the top....I cringe to think having to clean up all that mess from places in my kitchen you would NEVER think tomato sauce or ravioli could even get! ICU nurse in me is all for crisis prevention rather than crisis management!! |
Such a scarey thing, but I'm glad you weren't hurt. You must have been totally exhausted after cleaning all of that mess. |
I am so glad to hear that you were not injured..i can imagine what a mess you had |
Oh, the clean up was awful. Little single dots of reddish orange all over just everything many, many feet from the big mess. Thing was, I didn't even think of a toxin in the can at the time. I think I was so petrified at the chance I took severely injuring an eye - I guess I was kind of in shock or something and then there was all that work cleaning, washing clothes and treating the stains and shampooing, drying, styling hair. By now the can is already outside in the trash and I'm still recovering from surgery, not in any real shape to get the boat gate open and go through that garbage bag. Still, I will report the occurrence to Chef Boyardee and tell them where I live and that the can was bought in the last 2 months, from what store and hopefully, that can help. I had never heard of this type of can exploding before from any news source, cooking show or anything so I had just never even thought of it. But that lid was an absolute missile as it zipped past my face! I was amazed that a can of food could have that much pressure inside it. When it exploded, it was so loud it scared Tibbe and he barked and barked. Sure glad I wasn't leaning over that can when I opened it, I can tell you! |
Well, just filed a product complaint with ConAgra foods, telling them all that I could to help them trace the can's batch. Hopefully, it is just an isolated case and nothing widespread. But still, be careful opening those cans! |
Wow, that is definitely unexpected! I cannot believe that it exploded like that. We have some of those at home... I'll have to warn DH to be careful when he has one for lunch. That could have been really bad!! |
my daugher eats them...thank you for warning us and thankfully you were not hurt. that couldve really messed up your face. glad you are ok. |
