Pupils Dialated at Eye Doctor I went for my first ever eye exam today (I've always had perfect eyesight), and my eye doctor found that I am farsighted. He wanted to know more, so he dialated my pupils with drops and holy cow, it hurt! The assistant said it wouldn't hurt, but heck yes it did! This was at 4 pm today, and it is almost 9 and I am finally to the point that I can read threads on here... I have felt so blind all evening! Has anyone else had this done? I never realized how much i depended on my sight in everyday life. I couldn't answer text mesages, read emails, drive... |
Ouch! I've read that pupil dilation does different things to different people It has absolutely no effect on me, but I have always had poor eyesight. I hope you are 100% tomorrow. |
I am near-sighted (have been since I was 10) and all four of my kids wear glasses. It is normal for the optometrist to dialate your eyes at the first visit and every other year thereafter (at least for us). Aside from the drops irratating my eyes a little, the procedure doesn't usually bother me. My younger son stays very light sensitive for several hours afterwards. You should be back to normal by morning, if not I'd call the Dr. and let him/her know what is going on. |
I have never had the drops physically hurt, just seeing like that upsets my stomach. I usually go home and take a nap and by then, the effects have worn off. Hope you are back to normal this morning. :) |
Well, I was able to read last night... But I still feel like I can't focus 100%. It's odd that something like drops can effect you so much... I even felt really tired after they gave them to me, and the doctor said that happens sometimes. I couldn't pick out my frames yesterday because I didn't feel confident enough in my vision :p So I'm headed back today after work to pick them out. I've never worn glasses before, so this should be an experience! |
I've had my eyes dialated a couple of times over the years, then I switched eye doctors and my new doctor has never dialated my eyes. My DH went to our old doctor and again, he got his eyes dialated. So, I do wonder what it is about dialating eyes that is so important to one doctor but not the next. I remember them putting something in my eye that did sting. But I thought it was a dye to check for any abrasions, but it could have been the dialating solution. I am near sighted. I have been told I can thank years of computer work for that. And now I suppose YT is a contributor too. :p |
I have only had my eyes dialated a couple of times and I have worn glasses for nearsightedness for 39 years:eek: It really bothered me and was hours before I could see to watch tv or drive. DH has to has his dialated every other year, but his vision is much worse than mine and we use the same DR. |

I hate having my pupils dilated! I have them done almost every year at my annual exam, and I can never drive home afterwards because I can't see. It's never hurt though -- just affected my vision for a little while and made my eyes sensitive to light. I've had glasses since I was 6. I'm so jealous of everyone who gets to wait til they are adults to start wearing glasses or contacts! :) |
Oh I hate when the dialate your eyes!! No fun! :thumbdown |
I've had it done a few times and I wish I would have had some warning because I could NOT drive after it!! The very first time, I had to stare at the ground until I got close enough to my car to see it. Of course, I had to wear my glasses to the optometrist, and was soooo light sensitive afterwards, everything just looked glaring white!!! I found my darkest sunglasses and had to hold them over my glasses to get myself home. I was single at the time and had nobody around to get me... my roommate worked out of town! Every time since, I've had to have my boyfriend come and get me. I also find it very painful, it's a stinging sensation and my eyes water like crazy! You know what might be worse? Having your eyes frozen. I've had to have them frozen, I think it was to test eyeball firmness or something. They put drops in to freeze, and then held my eyes open and poked me with this little device, and I couldn't feel it but I sure could see it. I am a pretty queasy person and knowing they're poking me in the eyes makes me just feel gross! |
I'm very nearsiged and have worn glasses for over 30 years. I remember getting my eyes dialated a couple of times as a teenager and being incredibly sensitive to light for hours afterwards but don't remember any pain. Haven't had it done in years, though, but have had drops put in to numb the surface of my eye. Now that was a REALLY weird feeling. Kinda freaked me out because I could reach up and touch my eye but there was no sensation. Felt like I didn't have eyeballs in the socket. |
