Facebook users...

I wish FaceBook would ask us what we want before they do it. Here's a pretty good article about the changes this time around.

Digital Life - How to live with the Facebook Timeline (because you have no choice)

DvlshAngel985 01-25-2012 02:59 PM

This sucks. I'm really hating Facebook.

QuickSilver 01-25-2012 05:51 PM

I just started using Facebook... and now it sounds like I'm not going to be using Facebook very much longer.

NrfnKiva 01-25-2012 06:24 PM

i chose to use Timeline already and i love it! it's really not that bad at all. i love how it showcases your pictures more. and as far as putting events on it...you put only what you want on it. and your posts you can resize or can edit or remove.

give it a chance.

For me that's what is going to drive me away. I reluctantly joined Facebook in the first place, and I only stayed because of the high privacy settings. I have less than 50 friends because that's what I choose to have. After reading the article, it seems like I'll have less control of what goes public. The timeline idea is great. If it was a program that you can have on your computer to chronicle your life sounds pretty awesome. I'm just not a fan of how public it is and how users are forced to go back and delete everything because the privacy settings are so relaxed.

Facebook timeline and then what will come next? It seems like every time I start getting use to a change they go and change it up again. As if FB claims on how they own our info and use it however they want isn't bad enough. Not cool :thumbs_do

QuickSilver 01-26-2012 12:38 PM

That's what really concerns me about the timeline. Once again, they are attempting to commandeer private info, AND automatically put it out there for potential scammers.

NrfnKiva 01-26-2012 01:46 PM

i'm just wondering .....how much private information do you put on facebook?

i know with me i don't put much of anything.....maybe pics of my soap, garden, dog. nothing that private. if i want to talk about anything really private it's done in pms or emails or phone. the internet is never private really.

i am the type of person that hates change and always complained about anything changing on facebook to the point of posting signs and making a big stink about it for days. but i am a visual type of person, i LOVE artsy stuff. and when i saw a friends wall that had Timeline on it and she had these big beautiful pictures of yorkies on it, it suddenly appealed to me and i'd thought i try it.
but that's me.

i'm sorry if i stirred things up too much here.

i was just trying to understand.

Facebook is looking a LOT like MySpace these days.
I don't like how I can't BATCH delete stuff off my wall. Nobody needs to know what I put in my status message 3 years ago.

They also need to give you the ability to batch unsubscribe to peoples stuff now.

I don't put anything on it. However, I can't help it when my friends "tag" me when we're out. I have some relatives that I have to be "friends" with and I prefers they don't know what I'm up to. It's a really long story, but even so, pictures of Kaji and the meetups we go to are no one's business other than my own and the friends I want to share them with.

Beefed you're right, it is looking more and more like MySpace. I avoided that thing like the plague!

This is a big issue for me too, being a young business person, I have friends, past clients (which are all children who took horse riding lessons from me) and business professionals, old bosses etc on my FB. I try really hard to not post things that are embarrassing, but for instance the other day I posted:

"Had a good check up for the little man... trying a new shampoo that should help clear up the itch, it looks as if his dry skin is starting to clear up.... maybe a light at the end of the tunnel? On other news... I think Petsecure is going to hate me this year... definitely putting the insurance to the test this year."

Well an immature friend of mine made an inappropriate comment about my BF (let your mind wander...), when I was clearly talking about Harley. *facepalm*

I sooooo don't want to have to delete all of my past posts. May just go make a new account and get rid of the old one.

QuickSilver 01-26-2012 05:46 PM

I generally try to keep it pretty generic on Facebook because I have a wide variety of people reading my page. However, the timeline concerns me because it makes identity theft so much easier. Your date and place of birth... someone then goes to your parents' page, sees your mom's marriage date and name change, then they have your mother's maiden name... etc etc. A lot of websites and retail will use somewhat obscure facts from your past as security, and suddenly those facts aren't so hard to find. My posts I don't care about so much.

I really do think Facebook will be involved in some major scandal where they are caught selling private information to a foreign government. I give it five years or less.

Keep in mind too that facial recognition software is going to be commonplace in the near future as well.

I don't share anything that I wouldn't feel comfortable with complete strangers knowing about me....so my page is pretty boring :D

I see alot of people posting what they are doing every moment of their day and constantly updating it through their phone's mobile app. I'm too paranoid for that! I don't want people knowing when I'm gone from home and when's a good time to attempt a break in  Like I said, maybe I'm too paranoid, but who knows what people will use the information for???

kdhawks 01-26-2012 08:03 PM

I've had FB since 2006 - back when it was college students only, so I've seen it go through tons of changes. Every new version always freaks me out for a little bit. I'm the most boring facebooker ever though - all of that time, and I've only ever had one status update. I even have my wall deactivated right now...my friends can't even post on there. I don't like the new changes - but I'm not very concerned about them either, just because I rarely use it! It'd be pretty hard for anyone to learn anything about me via Facebook.

I agree with you.... with or without privacy settings, people's personal information gets leaked all over the place, not just the internet. So you can stop putting it out there... stop using credit cards, stop going to the ATM, don't pay bills online. Everything you do is tracked pretty much. I put nothing on facebook that I don't care if the whole world knows. I only have people I KNOW personally as friends and everyone else is just blocked entirely. I don't track myself and post it to facebook, using like foursquare. I also signed up using an email address I never check, so I don't even get junk email from facebook to my real email address.
don't put personal info out there and you won't feel helpless. Facebook is a fun and interactive tool, do not make it your lifeline to the world in general by putting your entire life story on it and expecting that of your family & friends.

Sorry if I sound harsh! I read that article and the comments below (the article, not here) and thought some people really are completely ignorant. :p :D
