Interesting discovery... had to share... So I always thought I was a well educated individual. I am an undergrad business student and a teaching assistant for 8 different courses this semester. It is my job to proofread, edit, and mark things. Well I just sought out a new book, to improve my english (I was getting tired of trying to defend my markings to students with a lower level book used in the class). I bought an upper level english book. I must say I'm on page 17 and am already ashamed  I've already learned that I don't know anything about complicated homonyms, and I, despite being Canadian, do not actually use British english, I use a hybrid of US and British. It's dreadfully inconsistent. :S If anyone is looking to assess their english ability "Grammatically correct" by Anne Stilman is very interesting. So here's my question, when was the last time you sat down and really assessed your writing? Do you think you could pass a 5th grade grammar test? :P I think our elementary schools are really missing some of the fundamentals, high schools too. Cause I'm learning stuff I never learned in my early school years. |
I think most of us would be surprised if we read the book. As far as my writing, I graduated in May with my Masters. I wrote paper after paper after paper. I always had a friend of mine (English Teacher) proof it. It did not matter how good I thought the paper was she always managed to find something. I think grammar is becoming a thing of the past. Right now in middle schools the main focus is reading. I am not sure about the lower grades. |

you'd all probably laugh if you heard me say, "I'm going out and about in a boat.":D |
What did you do your Masters in? If I don't get accepted to law school I'm likely going to apply for a Masters, but have no idea what to take. |

I admire you for being a middle school teacher... everyone thinks that because I love teaching I should teach at a high school level, and quite frankly I don't have the patience to deal with hormonal teenagers. lol. I'm considering teaching at the university level eventually, which means I'm going to have to have a long list of degrees behind me before being considered for a real job, for now I'm just a TA. |
I started out wanting high school. But instead I am teaching 8th grade Algebra I and Pre Algebra. So mine are more Jr High I guess. I think it takes special people for all grades. There is no way I could do Kindergarten!:eek: |
I know for a fact, that after 20 years out of school, my grammer suffers horribly. But I must commend anyone that goes into teaching, at any level. When our kids started school, I could not understand how teachers do it. 10-20 students at a time. It's hard enough with just 2 at home. |

Try 40 at a time... Middle school age! But on the other hand I don't think I could have done home schooling either. I need the structure a class room provides .. So I admire moms who home school. |
Very interesting post. I grew up in the hills of Tennessee...really sw Virginia. So I had a true southern hillbilly accent. My dh makes fun of me all the time for my "sayings". For example if I say "I am sick on my stomach" or "we can eat on this roast for a few days" know better but I still do it. I wouldn't write that way, but with email and texting I have developed some bad habits. I think the rules are changing .. For example "lol" has been added to dictionaries ! Slang changes every few years, many of our students are not raised in English speaking homes so some rules are now almost out of date. Just like basic manners, etiquette. I was raised with Emily Post and feel strongly about basic manners too! Two of my dearest friends at work are language art teachers, they help me a lot. I have had to relearn many grammar rules that I just have forgotten. I think it come naturally to some, like spelling. I am not that lucky. Now to a silly question.. I thought it was acceptable to used either the American or the English spelling of a word.. Would that be true of grammar rules? |

It depends on the use. Usually the rule is be consistent if you typically use US english then stay with that, if you use Canadian/British than stick with that. Basically the American spellings spells things more phonetically, whereas British maintains the original spellings which displays the origin of the words. |

Sorry.. I guess it is funny to compare grammar to etiquette ! |

I am not the best writer but have always prided myself on my editing skills as far as grammar and spelling go. I just have a hard time coming up with the descriptive words on my own. One thing that surprised me when my kids starting writing and typing more is that there is/are (which is proper?) no longer 2 spaces after a period. We were taught that back in my day (I'm 40 now) and now it's no longer the rule?? How can anyone possibly keep up with all the changes?? Luckily my daughters are very good with essay writing! |
I'm amazed by my 14 yo daughter. She texts like fiend (over 2k per mo), but uses proper grammer and spells words out. She'e always correcting ME when we text! |
I always adored English and writing in school and college. I used to feel like I was doing well with that type of thing. But being out of school for only 10 years, I already feel like I'm slipping. I find myself questioning things when I type or speak all the time. I need to do a review!!! Not sure I could pass the test the children have to take in this day and age. My Mom is a 5th grade teacher and it amazes me what the children learn so early. They are writing 5 paragraph essays in 3rd grade at her school! What?!!! We didn't write those until 7th grade when I was in school. I think I have a lot to learn! :) |

I have to correct my son's high school English teacher's handouts every week!! I honestly circle her errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation with a red pen and send it back. |
