Sick at work? So, I am a real believer that people who are sick shouldn't be at work.... However, I've been sick going on a month now with just a week lull in between. Here I am sitting at work sneezing and coughing but the bosses just don't seem to care if I'm spreading germs. Very interesting! In my field I can just work from home the same way I work at work so there is no reason for me to be here other than I can't call them and TELL them I'm working from home and being sick for a while has made me use up almost all my time off hours....Just boggles my mind. What are your thoughts about being sick at work? |
I hear ya. I've been battling a combination of sinus/allergy issues since Thanksgiving. Just can't seem to kick whatever is kicking me! I agree though, many times, when a co-worker comes in, it just ends up spreading around and also takes longer for the orginially infected to get better. When my family had a business, and I was a manager, I would tell my employees if you have a fever, are coughing non stop, or your ahem boogers are abnormal then I don't want to see you at work. I'm sure they took advantage of it once in their lives, but it made the workspace more comfortable. |
Makes me crazy in the head when a coworker will come into my office and chit chat while mentioning they think they are coming down with something. Ok, so get the H**L out of my office!! I'm not overly concerned if people stay home for the first day or two then come in and still have a cough or whatever - they are not usually catchy at that point. Rather than calling in to tell your bosses you will work from home, what about approaching them today, telling them you are feeling under the weather and don't want to get everyone else sick so you would rather work from home for a few days until you are feeling better. |
You two share my feelings then! I think so many people here have been coming to work sick that it just never ends. Our team has been minus one to two people a week! It's crazy. I wish I could just tell them it's best for me to work from home....I've been out of work so much lately that I don't think they will trust me, maybe they think it's silly how much I been sick but my red nose and coughing show the signs! However, if I was them I'd send me home :p |
I feel the same way. If you're sick, stay home! Luckily I can work from home as well, so if I'm well enough to work, I'll stay there and do it. If I'm not well enough, I just stay in bed! I feel the same way about school too. I remember when I was young and some teachers would give prizes at the end of the year for perfect attendance. A friend of mine wanted that prize so bad, she came to school every single day, and she even came with strep throat! I caught it, and quite a few others did too. But no matter what, she wanted that little trophy. |

Sigh my last sick day was used to take someone to the vet! But I am sitting here with an aching body, praying that 4:30 comes fast. |
I feel ya! Man, the later in the day it gets the less I can hear and the more I cough and sneeze! I'm surprised my fellow cubicle prisoners don't complain ;) |
I think it's difficult to generalize. Some people simply can't afford to take a sick day. I feel that if you CAN afford to, and you're in the contagious stage, you should just stay home if you have the flu. To combat all the sick people that come to work, I wash my hands often. We have people at our office that take a sick day at every little sniffle (often made up, I'm sure) because they don't really need the job, and others that never miss a day no matter what (like the guy with a stay at home wife and four small kids at home!). I stay home for the flu but not for a cold. We don't get paid sick days. The only people asking for paid sick days are the ones with little kids, that tend to take sick days often for THEM rather than for themselves. THAT bothers me. If your kid is sick, take a vacation day, or just a day off without pay. And before people get upset, I'm a parent, too. |

I think that the reason that so many come to work when they're sick is due to the economy. They're petrified that they will somehow lose their job if they call in sick. Sadly, many employers are taking full advantage of the competitive job market and using any excuse to get rid of a long time (read: highly paid) employee so that they can hire a newbie for minimum wage and no benefits. It's just horrible out there and I feel for anyone that is trying to find a decent paying job. Down here in Florida, it's impossible to find anything that pays more than $8/hour and forget about health insurance or anything else:rolleyes: There is always the next person in line that's willing to do the job for less. To the Beecee: I hope you feel better soon! |

It's a sick, sad world we live in. Scary too, I haven't had health insurance for 3 years. I got the flu a week before my wedding last year and it cost me $90 to walk into the doctor's office and have them tell me I have the flu, go home take Tylenol for my 105 fever and sleep... |
I had to take a sick day today:( I hate using sick days, but I don't want people at work spreading germs either. I am supervisor over 7 girls and I always tell them if they are sick stay home. I would rather work short staffed as keep spreading germs around. I have been sick for a month of just general all over aching, Sunday afternoon it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. I slept all day yesterday aching, chilling and coughing. Went to the dr today and it is a sinus infection. I thought I had the flu from the way I feel.:( |
I dislike taking days off because I get SO BORED at home...the thing I like most is being with my baby boy, and that's about it. I would hate not to have insurance...:/ however, I rarely use mine which is stupid. I been sick for almost a month off and on but haven't even bothered going to the doc (Well, there is deductible anyway). I'm always worried for my job as well, even though I've been working for my place for 15 years now and they always tell me I worry about that stuff too much... Just gets worse through the day. Right now I can't even hear, it's like I'm in a coffee can or something! Thanks for the get well wishes! And, Michelle, Get better! :) |
I hate when people are sick and come in. Really the sniffling and sneezing and coughing kills my concentration. I feel terrible for anyone sick, but stay home if you can! How come you can call and tell them you are working from home? Luckily for me, this new job I have I can work from home if I'm sick, my last job I was at for 6 years, even though I could perform all my duties from home and had access to work from home, I was never allowed to. It sucked! PS - Get better! :) |

Maybe I just feel bad about saying I'm going to work from home. My boss is actually the one that started getting everyone sick! He even came in with PINK EYE!! Grrr |
