Internet Spelling Police Hi, This will most likely irritate the 'spelling police', but...meh. I don't understand why people feel the need to be corrective when it comes to spelling or grammatical errors on the internet. I haven't seen it here, partly due to the notorious red underline that indicates to the poster that the word is incorrect. I've seen it on virtually all other boards I visit. WHY? Not everyone has a strength in spelling and/or grammar, and in my opinion it is inappropriate, rude, belittling and condescending to correct their misspelled words. If I had to answer a science question, I would fail miserably, not to even broach the subject of math! I'm horrible with both. Are people really that rude? If you see a misspelled word, but know exactly what the poster was attempting to spell, why correct them? You know what they meant. rant over:rolleyes: |
I agree that noone should correct your grammar or misspelled words for you. I am not very good at either. However I do strive to improve. I try to take time to proof read my posts and sometimes I catch the misspelled word. Many years ago (long before internet, when you had to use snail mail) I sent a lovely letter to my boyfriend,he sent it back, corrected with a note saying that he just was trying to help. I got a rather heated phone call and did some learning of his own. We have now been married for 31 years. He doesnt correct my spelling and I dont remind him that he cannt remember anything past 30 min ago. Take a deep breath and ignore the rudeness. |
Oh I've never seen the notorious red underline. But I do agree spelling, punctuation, etc is un-necessary to correct. This is a pet forun, not an English grammar class. I do think though that clarification questions, are quite okay to ask. |
I agree with the OP...I text from my phone and intentionally do not correct if I feel people can figure out what Im trying to say....leave out puntuation a lot |
Oh, the irony. |
I have mixed feelings about this. It depends on who you are correcting. My GF, for instance, didn't appreciate it and she made a point to tell me that before we even started getting heavily involved because an ex of hers was really bad about it and it made her feel stupid. She is probably one of the worse spellers I've ever met and all her family is as well. She and her mom are/were both factory workers for 20 to 40+ years and there is no need for them to worry about that stuff. I really don't care though, I am not with her for her spelling ability. (Plus I feel like I'm helping when she asks me to spell something for her) :D However, she now asks me why things are spelled certain ways and the easiest way to remember how to spell the most common errors people make like "Their, They're, there" "its and it's" "You're Your" and so on. She has a better handle on that now. As for spelling more difficult words, that I can understand for the majority of people... Words like definitely, accommodate, restaurant, separate and so on are just silly spelled words. All those I still have trouble with myself! Restaurant is my least favorite word to have to write or type, I typically substitute it with "diner" hah! :) I think people correct others out of some sort of OCD thing or something like that. They just can't help themselves. It's not right and I feel embarrassed for the correcter rather than the corrected when I see it in public. One last "However".... I really can't stand how some people intentionally misspell simple words. I'm not talking about making your texts shorter...I mean just completely and intentionally misspelling words to look cool. That drives me insane..... My reply to those that speak dumb are "Let me get out my secret decoder ring to figure out what the heck you're saying!" :) (But only to my close friends, of course). -Adriana |
okk, i mest bee mising the entir point of ths tread |
While I am always conscious of spelling and grammar - for myself - I don't think that people should be correcting others on the internet. That said, I reserve the right to not respond to anything I don't understand. I've (tried to ) read many posts that have so few correctly spelled words, coupled with NO punctuation, that I just give up and move on to the next post. I'm not going to expend energy trying to decipher garbage. |

I also agree that it depends. If someone is asking for help with spelling a word, that's different. |
I lean on 'Spell Check' most of the time. :D |
