Any special things you do for the spirit of Xmas? I thought I'd start a thread about what special activities or events are part of your Christmas season, that allows you to get in touch with the "spirit" of Christmas? Almost every year, I do meditation classes several times a week in Dec, and the students donate what they can, I in turn give this money to The Food Bank here. In fact that is on my todo list for tomorrow. We never raise a whole lot of money, a couple hundred dollars or so, but I think every little bit helps. Then every night starting on the 12th day of Christmas ie 12 days before the 25th I light a candle and sit and meditate starting at 5 minutes, and then on the 12th night one hour in front of 12 lit candles. Sometimes my family joins in for a bit, sometimes for the whole time. The third thing I do is go through all the doggy stuff, and my personal clothing things, and give to the shelter the doggy things I don't need or use, and give to Goodwill items I don't use or need either. |
Those are all very nice traditions. :) We give to the Salvation Army. I miss going to see the Christmas lights and store window displays on State Street in Chicago. Ice skating in Daley Plaza. Now that Marshall Field's is gone, I'm not sure if it is as nice. I'm too old and cold-blooded now to go to the tree lighting ceremony on the White House Ellipse in Washington, DC. We usually stay home and listen to lots of Christmas music, play with the doggies, and video conference with the family back in Chicago. |
We go to candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve then church on christmas morning. It sets off the rest of Christmas with a warm spirit full of happiness. |
We're not very religious, but some years we do manage to catch the Midnight service, it's just beautiful and I never fail to tear up when everyone sings Silent Night at the end:cry: On Christmas Eve, we all pile into the truck in our pajamas, crank the Christmas music, and go and look at lights. When we get back, it's hot Cocoa and cookies, then we all talk for a while before heading to bed. When the kids were little, I was usually up most of the night doing stockings and playing Santa, but now I only have my daughter still living here, so one stocking to do, and everything else is already done:) |

If we don't do the Midnight Mass, I get up really early and go to the 7am service. Walking to church in whatever weather, and walking back is a ritual I love. |

Awh touching base with family is so great to do, and of course being with the doggies is the best ever. My best and long term friend, when I only had one dog and she had one, we used to have the dogs at each other's houses. But now I have three, and she still one. But her Penny and my crew just don't do so well together. So now when we go over Xmas Eve, I leave pups at home, and when she comes Xmas day she leaves her pup at home. |

Here is a video of Obama and the tree: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics...hristmas-tree/ It is often very cold standing out there. :) |
And yes, midnight church services are beautiful. Love the Christmas pageant at the National Cathedral. |
I love watching all the Christmas shows I watched as a kid. Each night I try to catch a show like Rudolph, Charlie Brown Christmas, how the Grinch stole Christmas, Santa Claus is coming to town, etc.... I love those old shows. I love Miracle on 34th street (the original) but this year I missed it. :( Christmas eve we all go to my grandparents house. They are in now 80 years old and do not want to host any longer, but we all go there and bring/make all the food and stay and clean up the whole house after wards. They really enjoy having everyone over. |
My husband and I curl up with on the sofa with two glasses of whine and watch Holiday Inn and White Christmas. Then we go to church at 11:00 and sing in the choir. |
We eat! :D Also, we give money to some animal sanctuaries. |
Sigh I just noticed I spelt "wine" as "whine" hah! I ate my typing cookies today! |
We always buy for a child on the angel tree every year. After the baby comes and she gets a little older, enough to understand, I want to start letting her pick something out for another little kid on the angel tree as well. |
