Hardwood or Pergo? Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are back and forth on this issue so I wanted to open it up to a wider audience. We just bought an older home, pulled up the carpets and WAHLAH!!! damaged, top nailed, hardwood. It is livable for now (as we don't have the money to fix it at the moment) but we are thinking ahead and trying to plan... should we sand and refinish the existing hardwood? Or get some nice Pergo (or another brand, but same idea)? I've heard that dogs can really damage real hardwood, so there is one point for Pergo... but having hardwood is such an asset to a home, right? Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated :-) |

say no to pergo. if you refloor, do something like bella flooring which is a lot cheaper than it used to be and is inbetween pergo and real wood. If you have an older home however, resurfacing your original hardwoods really will pay off investment wise and add a lot of charm. I think the deciding factor would be what type of wood it is. The older wood floors are usually made out of quality wood and will really look beautiful once they are refisnished. It's a lot of work though and not a cheap process. |
Definately Hardwood. I bought a 1950'a built house the other year. It has old wood floor in the bedrooms & living room. I stripped it all down to the bare wood and installed new wood flooring in the hallway, dining area & kitchen. Then I stained & polyed the entire house. It was a heck of a project doing it all myself, but it looks fantastic. All the tools needed can be rented at Home Depot. |
If you already have real hardwoods I would stick with them. There are all kinds of finishes you can put on them to protect them from little feet/claws and puppy accidents. |
Bruce put down Bamboo flooring, haven't had any problems with Beamer and Lil Bit scratching the flooring. I love the Bamboo. |
We had the exact same situation in our first home. We pulled up the carpet and had the hardwood re finished. It was gorgeous afterwards, but oh what a messy process! But I think it was well worth it. However, we did not have a pet at the time. So I have no experience with that, but on the design factor, I like real hardwood the best. |

Hardwood adds value to home, Pergo does not. Hardwood can be refinished many times and should last the life of the home, Pergo cannot be refinished. People who lived in the West often have Pergo and/or engineered wood because it can be placed on a slab, but those who have a wood subfloor can use hardwood. Have it refinished, the new finishes can make wood floors very easy to take care of. Dogs can damage Pergo, everything from scratches to urine, and it can't be reparied, whereas hardwood can. |

As with everyone else I say stay with the hardwood. If you have an older home the nicks and scratches with just add character to them...maybe have them sanded and refinished? My Aunt and Uncle had pergo put down in there kitchen/dining room...it show EVERY crumb and gets dirty fast...may be more durable than wood but, hardwood gives a more "homey" look....IMO...of course if you are going with a more modern look...maybe pergo is the way to go....is this in your kitchen? ever thought of laminate? we had that put in our kitchen and you have to actually get down and touch it to see that it isn't stone tile...LOVE IT! |
My friend and my aunt have pergo and are not too thrilled with it. They both have dogs and when the dogs come in from outside, if it's damp or rainy, all the paw prints show up on the floor. I would go with hardwood. Good Luck! |
I agree if you already have hardwood I would keep it!! DH and I just bought a home and it has the pergo. Yes it is nice, but it is no hardwood!! :D P.S You just cant find really nice hardwood anymore, Def keep it- you will love it and it will add value to your house! |

WOOD FLOORS! I think wood is so much better than Pergo. BTW, how old is your place? We have an old home and it has all the original wood floors. I'm an old house lover, so I love to hear about others homes! |
