Know anything about guitars?? My almost 10 year old daughter wants a guitar for Christmas. I'm thinking of getting her one if I can find one (new or used) that is pretty decent for about $100. I'm thinking an acoustic guitar. I have someone who can give her lessons. What I need help on is knowing what is a good brand name and what is junk. I have no idea. Well, I have heard of Fender's, but that is just about it. :p |
Gibson? Isn't that a brand name of one too? I think Gibson and Fender's have been around a while. Have you checked pawn shops? When my son wanted one that is where we went. |
Yes, Gibson, now that you say it I have heard of it before. Pawn shops are a good idea. I don't even know where any are around here, but I'm sure I could find them. Thanks! |
My husband just started learning to play. Not sure if you have one of these stores in your area, but they are online...Guitar Center. We got his there and it was very reasonably priced. Good luck to you! |

Bitsy, My knowledge of guitars goes back to when I was a little girl. I remember the first one I picked up. It took me sixty seconds to break a string. I have never forgotten that, either!:D |
I agree with Aymee on Guitar Center. My son loves guitar, and started with an acoustic beginner "set" from there. I think it was around $100 and included guitar, soft case, and a couple little things. He then added an Electric Fender, Electric Gibson Les Paul and a really nice acoustic his grandmother gave him and I can't remember what kind it is...but it's signed by Clint Black :D. It's been fun to see him over the years, and hear him! Hope your daughter enjoys it as much! Good luck! |
My husband has played guitars for over 40 years. He has both acoustic and electric. It seems to me that acoustic sounds better than electric when you are playing solo. My husbands first guitar was a Gibson and he has Martins and Guilds too. One thing I learned from looking at guitars with him is that the closer the strings are to the neck the easier to play. I think it is called the action. He has bought several guitars from Guitar Center. They have a nice selection from low end to high end. Their staff is pretty helpful too. |
My dad plays acoustics, but had played electrics back in the 60s. I think he has Ibanez and Gibsons now. Guitars can be really expensive. Oh, another excuse to link a Jack White vid. :D That contraption he's playing in the beginning is a "guitar" he made in a few minutes. And in a cut out scene, he say's "who needs to buy a guitar?" :D Oh and my I add, how cool is that, that your DD wants to learn to play the guitar! I wanted to learn, but I have abnormally short pinkys and it's really difficult/impossible to reach to play certain chords. Same with piano. :( My brother has the musical talent, but never pursued it. |
