Any Excel Spreadsheet experts here?
 
I am having a problem with a formula and I want to fix it. I have two columns, both with a sum figured from a formula. The third column then takes the difference from those two colums. It's a simple formula. Every once in a while when the third column (the difference in the first two) is a 0 I get an error in that column. However, this happens frequently and I have other situations where it will figure the 0 without the error, same exact formulas. Anyone know how to fix it, or what causes this? It's driving me nuts that I can't figure it out. A co worker says she has the same problem with one of her spreadsheets. We both know excel pretty well, but apparently can't figure out the easy stuff. :rolleyes:

Is the entire 3rd column programmed to show you the answer in a specific manner?

Yes, the third cell is the difference between the two cells previous to that in the row, then the entire column is formulated to add those answers for a total of a given group.

I mean how you want the answer to be displayed. Ex. Money can be dispalyed in dollar amounts only, dollars and cents, the amount can turn red if it's a negative amount, etc. Is that specified?

Well I have all the cells in the column set to display as a "general" number. But I set it to "number" with a decimal setting of .1 and it corrected. That works, but I don't understand why some random cells will get an error message when others formulated the same way do not. I will change the whole column to "number." Thanks!!

lol, talk about slow. This has eluded me for 8 years. :eek: I finally gave up and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Almost ALWAYS it's one of those slap in the face easy answers. You got it much faster than I. :p:p

I've come to the conclusion that computers are temperamental and they don't like me. With a little ingenuity, I can make them do what I want them to do.
