Which do you prefer & why?
 

If you use one, which do you prefer: an electric blanket OR an electric mattress pad?

I was so cold last night, I dug out my electric blanket only to discover it's not working. So, I went shopping for a new one today and was shocked by the increase in price from just a few years ago. Then, next to the blankets I saw heated mattress pads. I thought, as heat rises & you lay on top of it, it might be better but then I wondered if it bunches up if you toss & turn alot. I've never had one, as I've only used electric blankets that go on top of you, but as I'm having to make a new purchase, I'm considering all my options :)

Which do you use & why do you like it? Hoping you can help me choose.

I like blankets I wouldnt like my mattress heated but I am also more of the type of person that doesnt like to be too warm when I sleep. I just like my down comforter in the winter and we keep our house cool in the winter

I love my mattress pad. During the winter I put it on a timer so that when I go to be it is nice and warm. We have a queen size bed and my dh can't stand the heat but the one we have has dual controls so he just keeps his turned off. It doesn't slide. Mine is getting old and the skirt is beginning to rip so I'm soon going to be looking for a new one.

I pulled my college roommate out from under an electric blanket that had shorted out and was on fire,,, not sleeping with one of those. I do have two or three bags filled with deer corn that go in the microwave. I even take them on trips with me.

I love to cuddle under a very warm electric blanket in an almost cold room!

Down comforter and a cool room:p I haven't used electric blankets in years, the down comforter keeps us warm and toasty.

I just bought an electric blanket and I love it. It is machine washable (unlike the old ones), and the pups are looooving it. I haven't used a heated mattress pad though...

I've never even heard of an electric mattress pad, but it sounds comfy. I am very hot natured though, so I am not sure if I would like it too much. I have used electric blankets, but always kept them on the lowest setting. I do like those, so I guess my preference would be the blanket.

When I first started to have some back problems someone suggested I try and electric mattress pad. I had used an electric blanket before but did not have one at the time. I really liked the electric mattress pad. It warms from underneath you so the bed is warm when you get in and it keeps you good and warm. Your regular blanket holds the warmth in and it's nice and cozy. I used it for a couple of years and then got a bigger bed. It was nice though. I have often thought of getting another.

I agree. I have read of so many fires due to electric blankets that I have always been scared of them. I would feel the same way about an electric mattress pad. I am, also, very wary of something like that with yorkies sleeping in the bed and they tend to dig, which could be really dangerous.

I used to have a down duvet. Nothing (non-heated) compares to the warmth. I hated the dry cleaning bills though.

Just got back from shopping again and I saw that all the queen size are only available with dual controls. I couldn't find a queen pad or blanket with a single control...do they not think about us single gals?


Yikes! That's a lil scary. But, I have two kids in college..and I see the state of their beds/rooms and know the blankets aren't ever supposed to be folded over on themselves.

I've never heard of deer corn bags. Is this something you make or buy? I like the idea. I love old skool hot water bottles :)

When I was a lil kid and spent the night at my Nan's house, she made a lil bed for me in her room under the window on a fold out cot. She used to pile my Grandad's old heavy wool Army blankets on me and then OPEN THE WINDOW in the middle of WINTER :eek:. Funny though, I have fond memories of the blankets being so heavy I could barely move and my nose being cold as could be.

Well... I prefer air conditioning ..sometime a light blanket if it is set too Low

Sorry, we really don't use electric blankets here. Even before I lived in Miami ( Virginia). But my dh has used electric heating pads and liked them

I am so with ya LilSis. Even when it is cold out I seem to sleep warm and like the fan going. :D

I got my BF an electric heated mattress pad. On our King bed, I got a twin size so it's just on his side. (I am always hot when I sleep) the only problem I have with it is it heats up under the blankets of the whole bed so I am still getting the heat from it. He loves it, it makes the sheets warm when he gets in the bed and then he turns it off most nights after a few mins bc he really just hates getting into a cold bed. Anyways, look for sales. I got his at Macys. It was 50% off and then I had a coupon for another 20% off. I paid $40 for it. When I gave it to him, his whole family & mine said they were going to buy one, they loved it! if you get one that fits your bed, it tucks into the corners like a fitted sheet and goes under your fitted sheet so it does not bunch up or anything.

Nothing scares me more than the thought of electricity running through my bedding:eek: Down comforter is the way to go, no increase in electric bill, no fire danger:) There are so many other blankets that are nice and warm, too;) I have one that is thin, yet it's super warm, and I got it for $15 at Home Goods

Well, after reading alot of reviews online, I decided to try a heated mattress pad this time. I bought the Sunbeam Premium Heated Mattress Pad in the Queen size at Macys. It was regular $260 and I got it on sale for $130!

I put it on the bed last night and used the preheat function, while I was getting my jammies on and combing out ZoE's hair. Omgosh....PURE HEAVENLY WARMTH!!! It was amazing to crawl into a warm bed. It not only heats up the bed below, but before you get is in it heats up your top sheet too, so when you crawl inside, it's a cocoon of warmth.

I'd turned the heat down to 58 before we went to bed and we still stayed toasty warm all night. ZoE usually wakes up once around 3:30 in the night to go pee and she didn't wake up til her regular breakfast time at 6:30 this morning. We got up, so she could eat & go gotty...and then WE WENT BACK TO BED! Our lazy butts finally crawled out for good about 10am this morning :D

I'd highly recommend one! It heats the bed up so much better than an electric blanket. I only used the 3 setting and then turned it down to low during the night. The only drawback I can see is that you can't quickly remove the heat source from you like you can when you throw an electric blanket off you if you get too warm in the middle of the night. As I'm expecting company over the Christmas holidays, I'm gonna go buy another for the guest room while they're on sale.

I'm glad your enjoying it. I used to work as a paramedic and would come home cold after being outside in the freezing cold most of the night. My feet would be freezing and I could not get my body temperature up for what seemed like hours. The electric blanket and mattress pad are wonderful for warming up cold bodies.

Usually problems with these devices occur when they are not washed and dried properly over a period of time. Storing them wrong can also cause wear on the wiring. I never left my blanket or pad in the dryer for more than 10 minutes on low heat. I then would hang it over a couple of chairs to dry. Enjoy your comfy warm bed.
