I would check with your vet to make sure you can do this without losing effectiveness, but have you tried crushing up the pill and mixing it really good with some yummy tasting wet food? He may really enjoy some meaty wet food. I have to give both my dogs a pill (different pills) and a joint supplement and this is the easiest and only way to give it to them. Worse comes to worse just hide it in some wet food and see if he'll take it. Chip is horrible about taking medicine. I have to shove it in the back of his throat and hold his mouth shut sometimes. He will hold it there forever to the point where he starts drooling. If I have to give him medicine this way I put it in the back of his throat and shake a treat bag and it's like insta-swallow. Of course I give him a treat. |

Not giving up. Although I do see him fading a little more each day. 15yrs is very old for a shepard/huskey mix. So everyone here will continue to try to help him have a quality of life. Thank you all again for all of your suggestions. |
I have the same problem giving Neo his "itchy" medicine. I found a compounding pharmacy locally that will flavor pet meds with a taste (like beef, peanut butter, etc.) that the pet will love. It will not affect the potency of the medicine, and being a liquid, just a squirt of the syringe, and you're done! Just ask your vet and I'm sure he/she would agree to write a 'script for it! Good luck. |
I took 2Bits to the vet today. He really is not doing well. We are now trying to decide what kind of life quality he is having. He is supposed to weigh 70lbs but because his muscles are just wasting away he weighs so much less. His hips are in very bad shape, popping in and out of place. He did so good for so long, with ageing. In the last week he just seems to be struggling so much more to be himself. This is the part of life that is so tuff for those of us that must make decisions for our loved ones. I will be talking to all of the kids and seeing if they have peace about what must be done. 2Bits has been a part of our family for so long,he has been the neighborhood doggie that guarded my children while they played and kept me safe when my husband was out of town. I am not liking today, because now I have to decide when. |

Having a compound made is a good idea. It is unfortunate that even when we do get his meds in him regularly he is still in alot of pain. He pants and I think that he would pace around the house if he could. |
Tina is on lasix and anipral and what I do is, I make a little meat ball and put them inside and she never knows the difference. I feed her Welliness Senior (canned) I give her the little meat ball first and then she eats the rest of her food never knowing the difference. |
