Are You a City Person or a Country Person?

I guess I am somewhere in between. I wouldn't want to live in DC, or Baltimore, or even downtown Annapolis. Too busy for me. Love to visit cities, though -- NYC is one of my all time favorite places to visit but I could not imagine living there. Well, maybe for a little while, but I think I'd get sick of it fast.

On the other hand, I also don't want to be sooo far secluded that I become, like, not a part of society, LOL. My grandma lives in Young, AZ up in the mountains and it's the smallest town EVER. You have to drive at least an hour to the grocery store. Heck, to any store. She's 5 hours from Phoenix. I could never live there, but again, had fun visiting.

Right now I live on 3 acres with 90 acres of farmland behind us. No sidewalks or neighbors, except the farmer, and one house next to us (we never see the people -- the guy just mows his lawn ALL the time, LOL). But we are so close to everything... five minutes away from a bunch of little stores and food joints and fast food and all that. Ten minutes away from Annapolis, etc. Pretty close to DC/Baltimore.

Ideally, I'd prefer to be in a neighborhood though. Our house is scary if you are there by yourself! I'd like a neighborhood, with sidewalks, but still far enough apart to have your privacy and space.

What about you? :)

I am both. Love the convenience, activity, and architecture of cities. At the same time, I love the serenity, beauty, and simplicity of the country.

My ideal would be to have a townhouse in the city and a huge acreage in the country.

I agree with you Brit that it can be scary to be all alone in a house far away from other people.

Well I live in the city but its a small city I wouldnt like to live in a big city. I love the Country however I dont like not having stores and a variety of restaurants available to me. Also what I like about where I live is I have Interstate access to go any direction of the city or state. I really like suburbs though. If I could live anywhere though Id be in Florida. Someday Ill be there

I grew up on a small city lot and loved how it was within walking distance to everything I wanted and I really miss that aspect of it...but I don't miss the people & how everyone watched everyone and were so in everyone's business.

With each home I've lived in I've chosen a bigger house and a bigger lot. Now for the first time ever, I'm out of a subdivision and am on a just few acres of land...tiniest house I've ever lived in, on the most land I've ever had. I love it! After being here, I think I could live in the middle of 100 acres & be happy...although then I'd worry it wouldn't take much for me to become a recluse. I do like that I'm still close enough to amenties though. I'm less than six miles from restaurants, grocery stores, meijer, walmart, etc. I'd hate to have to make a long trek into town to get things, so I could never live too far out in the boonies.

City girl all the way. :) Charlotte isn't much of a big city, but it's big enough for me right now. My ideal city is one where I don't have to drive anywhere. I'm trying to finish up my clinical licensure in NC before I make any big moves. I really want to live in Manhattan before I'm 30.

I grew up in the COUNTRY. My parents still live out there. I get bored after about a day of visiting. Levi, on the other hand, loves to go out there and play.

maci_mace 10-10-2011 09:29 AM

I grew up a city girl for 17yrs, but have since been a beach bum and turned into a hunter's wife lol. I must say I love living in a small town, what I hate is being so far from the West Edmonton Mall [MUCH better than the MOA in my own experiences] If I could live in a small town close to a big city, I'd be set.

I love horse back riding, nature, photography, and tagging along on hunts. BUT I HAVE to be able to get to a Mall for the sake of shopping for Maci and I. I love stores like anthrolpogie, urban outfitters, H&M, etc ...and those are NOT country/redneck stores haha.

I guess I'm a good balance of both! However my ideal life would be a beach bum. :D Did that for a year, wish I could do it forever!

I have the opposite experience with city life. I've lived in LA my entire life, yet, I don't even know my neighbor's name. Everyone just goes about their business, never bothering anyone else.

I love LA, and can't imagine being anywhere else. The only part I dislike is the traffic. People get lost here in downtown so often and that causes so much traffic. I live close to Dodger stadium, Staples Center, LA Live, and all of downtown. Whenever there is a big event, traffic slows to a crawl. I would however, love to live in a place where the houses are not too close together, and no one has a 2 story house. I want privacy even in my own backyard. :p It can't be too far from LA. I know no other city will offer me good eats at 2 am. Yum.... tacos.....

I'm a city girl. Not necessarily this city, but family & scholarships & hockey have kept me here.;) I came close to moving to tiny Bloomington, IN. w/my bff years ago but the above kept me here. I'd probably be back by now anyways, as I wouldn't enjoy all of the bordering fields & two lane roads.;)

I like having options as far as stores, food, parks, & entertainment, etc. While I'd love the tranquility of living in the country I've seen too many movies & too many bugs (of which I'm terrified). Yes, I'm strange.:p

Ideally, I'd like a house with a nice yard for the usual yard stuff & a stockade fence to block anyone from seeing it, yet having a neighbor I can go to if needed.:) Sidewalks & such sound good, too, but I don't want to live on Wisteria Lane.:D

horsnaround 10-10-2011 11:00 AM

I live in the country on five acres but very close to town less then a mile. Plus I have a lake in front. Perfect other then it's a small town and don't have a ton of shopping (walmart is about it). Other then summer time then its very busy with tourist and lots of little shops open. I love it.

chattiesmom 10-10-2011 11:21 AM

Farm girl!

I live on a small horse farm about 8 miles from town. I love the privacy. When hubby and I married our dream home was a log house in the middle of 100 acres on the western slopes of Colorado. I would never want to give up the "country life" -- we affectionately call it the funny farm :D, but I would LOVE to move the farm closer to a touristy town somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains

capt_noonie 10-10-2011 01:10 PM

I grew up and still live in the suburbs. I like it, as everything is nearby, and we are close to the big city, however one thing that I have always hated was the lack of space and nosy neighbors. And unless you have a huge piece of property, that's just how it is.

jadabug 10-10-2011 01:15 PM

I have never know anything but country living. We have lived on my DH family farm since we married. The farm we live on is about 60 acres and we have Angus cattle and a few laying hens. We also inherited a 100 acre farm from DH uncle and it is about 30 miles away from where we live now. We are just about an hour from Knoxville, home of The University of TN and about 45 minutes away from Gatlinburg and The Great Smoky Mtns national park. I don't think I would like living in the city, other than having more shopping choices.

Yorkiedaze 10-10-2011 01:45 PM

We love our tiny community. We know quite a few of the people who live here. It's like family, and I feel safe since we all look out for each other, were 1 mile from the police station and fire station. We have our bank, Vet. dentist, grocery store, domino's, coffee shop, Mexican food, subway, ice-cream store, and a few others in a small shopping area 6 blocks from us and we aren't even a town. ;) We are 4 miles from Lompoc, a small city. I had my share of living in the country. I don't want to be too far from good shopping & restaurants, but don't want to live in the city either. We go to San Francisco to visit our son, (who just got married) and love it, but would never live there. Too busy and noisy for me.

City Girl, all the way, here.....
I live right in the middle of it, and Love it!! I can walk to and from work.... I drop off or pick up dry cleaning....stop by the grocery store and pick up a few things...or do a little shopping.... I Love how pretty much every corner store/market, etc. is still Open, even during the worst snow storm or whatever because a lot of the Owners live above their shops.... and you can still walk places with No Traffic during those times.
I could Totally live in New York... and actually used to go up there just about every other weekend for a long time. I do LOVE to get Out of the city and go visit my parents and Love getting out for vacations... but I always Love coming back. :)

ArmaniMan 10-10-2011 03:11 PM

I am a suburb person- haha! I lived in NYC for 4 years and after 2 or so I couldn't wait to get out. However, I could never live in the country, I need to be close to malls, stores, people, etc. I like the convenience of being close to everything- even simple things like hearing people here say the closest vet is 45 minutes away, I could never handle that- within 45 minutes of me there are probably 25 vets. Another thing I like about the suburbs is being close enough to a big city to take full advantage of the world class entertainment, food, culture, etc. I can easily slip into the city for the evening or afternoon and then come back home. Also in the city I lived in a small shoebox apartment for double the price of my current spacious apartment.

CouversMom 10-10-2011 03:53 PM

I like living in the suburbs, but close to a lot of different shops. I love my 1/3 acre lot and being able to walk to the grocery store, home improvement store, coffee shops, stores and clubs. I do not like the idea of not having a yard or having to maintain acres of land. I love where I'm at right now, but would love to live closer to a larger city to do more shopping

I call myself the Country girl swagger with a little glitz and glamour.

i was born and raised in a small town of 500 and am a true country girl at heart. i like to sew, cook, bake, garden, hunt and fish for food, camp and play guitar and sing country music. i'm a cowgirl without the ranch and horse. but i grew up with a taxidermist for a dad so hunting was huge in my family. i'm into camo and cowboys and westerns. i love that stuff.

but i live right outside of KCMO and i love living in the burbs of a city. it's not a huge city like Chicago, which i also loved to visit for the shopping. my thing is i like being close to everything, but i hate being so close to other people. and i don't like traffic and ghettos and all the cruel and strange people around the cities. but i love the shopping, the designer accessories and clothes (don't own them just love them). i'm so practical and cheap from being raised in a poor country cabin family, but i like all the finer things like fancy meals and wines and fancy things.

so i'm defin a country girl, who wears pearls and diamonds and lipstick and carries a Kathy bag and likes to look good in pretty feminie things with cowboy boots. i'm the leather and lace kinda girl. a little bit of everything.

southernbelle04 10-11-2011 07:42 AM

I am a total country girl! I hate, hate, HATE going into any big city. I hate all the noise, the smells, the traffic, the people sometimes. I just don't like it. But I was raised in the country and I think it is just my way of life. I am very quiet until you get to know me and pretty simple. I'm happiest with my quiet little life in the country, few neighbors, and land to roam free on. I went to NYC twice and hated it both times. I told my husband I never wanted to go back. I mean, I'm glad I got to go and see things, but I was ready to leave like after one day. I like DC for the sites to see, but definitely could not see myself living there. I guess I'm a country bumpkin! LOL :)

QuickSilver 10-11-2011 07:45 AM

City, all the way. I did get tired of New York when I lived there, but even after seven years, San Francisco feels like Amish country. Coffee places close at 8pm here. I don't even I realize I need coffee until 10pm! Come on!

Cha Cha 10-11-2011 09:01 AM

My mom always told me I was born in a barn. :) Been a cowgirl all my life. Kansas in general is pretty much in the country, but I am 30 minutes from anything I want in the bigger city, and KC, OKC, and and the Big D are all within a few hours drive.

I love this thread, it is interesting to put a place and person in a mind picture. I am a small city lady. As a child I grew up in the country on a small farm. It was there that my love for nature, and animals took root. Imagine my shock when I went away to the big city and OSU. Campus life, people from all walks of life, strange ideas, music and life styles. Innocents and assumption of good vanished and sadly never returned. The Pill, make love not war, Vietnam and music at midnight. Big City Life wasn't right for me. When I married, we moved to his home town. A tiny place in rural Fl. I lived there for 26 years and raised my children , on a small farm.
Now I live in the county seat Bartow, Fl. I love it ! I have a tiny 1940s cottage house, on a big double lot. I have sidewalks, a lovely park, library, civic center and lakes all within walking distance. I can stroll down town and browse the shops, admire the historical churches and homes. I can visit Stafford Inn Bed and Breakfast and have afternoon tea, stop by the court house, museum, postoffice, tailor and dry cleaner shop and day spa. I can chat with the vet, wave to my florist, get a hair cut, nails done and have an ice cream cone at an outside cafe. On weekends we have flea market and antique dealers set up. Art shows and other things always going on. The hospital and mall shopping is less than 5 miles away. I am proud of my little city, not only is it a great place to visit it is a great place to live.
