Nerve root injection Has anyone had a spinal nerve root injection? I've been having severe back and leg pain and have been diagnosed with degenerative disk disease, spinal canal stenosis and spondylosis. Tomorrow I am scheduled for a nerve root spinal injection and I'm very anxious about it. Let's say I have a low threshold of pain :(. My husband is driving me and the doctor is having me take a Xanax an hour before the shots for anxiety. I'm wondering if any of you guys had this and if so what can you tell me about it. Thanks for any information you can provide. |
i think thats what my mother gets. i didnt know it was called nerve root injection but she has been getting steroid injecions in her neck and spine for the past few years. i remember she was afraid when she went to get her first shot. i drove her and waited for her, but she didnt need and premedication. She was very happy with the results, really helped alot. but of course , they only help for so long and then the pain comes back and you cant get those injections too often cause not good for you. |

I used to get these in my neck. Pre-medication was a must for me, too :). You will most likely feel really good immediately afterwards because they put lidocaine in the injection. The second day you will hurt like heck from the shot. It gets better after the second or third day when the steroids kick in. Good luck. |

I sent you a PM. I had one and it worked great and stayed with me for about a month. The hard part was the sweats and headaches the day after the injection and again now when it's coming out of my system. It takes the inflamation down system wide, not just in my neck. Also, I'm diabetic and it raised my blood sugar to over 500 for a day or two. The dr told me it could last anywhere from a week to a year. ps: the one valium pill an hour before the procedure was wonderful !!! |

I have no idea but wish you the best. I had a spinal tap to collect fluid when I had encephalitis. I do remember being in the fetal position as the procedure was done, and the pain was tolerable. then again, I was not really that cognitant at the time. I did not want it done, but the Nuerologist pretty much said I would be dead in a few days if I did not have it done ASAP. Look at me now! Relax, you will be fine. |
Thanks Steve :) Now I just want it over with. |

It will be over before you know it. I am sure they will give you a Novacain shot or something similar before they make the injection. It is always better to have liquid shot in, rather than withdrawn. When it is over, let us know how you are, and I bet you will say it was not as bad as you thought. |
I have had several epidural and facet injections under mild anesthesia and with today's pain medicine specialist you rarely feel anything but the bee sting from the local! The procedure takes 5 - 10 mins. if that and you may feel some pressure in your back during it but rarely pain. I am always anxious until we get started and then the mild anesthesia relaxes you and then it is over and you are feeling the benefits! I last had a deep hip injection Friday B4 last and literally felt nothing but the sting from the Lidocaine at first. These guys who do these injections are VERY good! Hope you will relax and not worry so as these injections are so helpful. |
Its not that bad, I had mine about 2 months ago. They don't work for me.. It does feel like little bee stings, the only thing I didn't like it when they inject the stuff in your body. UGH it feels so strange!! Also if you can tell the nurse to fan you! It helps so much!! The last one I had the nurse had a little paper fan and she was fanning me with it, it was amazing! You will be fine! I will be thinking of you ((hugs)) |
Thanks for everyone's replies. :) The procedure was yesterday afternoon. So far no pain, just weakness in my legs but I haven't been moving around much yet. The injection was as you all said, like several bee stings and done before I knew it. There was some pain as the medicine went in but nothing I couldn't manage. I'm praying it works for me. Guess I'll know more in a couple of days or so. Thanks again to each of you who replied with all your information and well wishes. I really appreciate the help :). |
Hope it starts working well for you in a while. At least no pain, and thats a good thing. |
Hi Jackie, thinking of you today. Hope you're feeling ok. |
