I am an idiot! I noticed last night that there wasn't a WHOLE lot of space left on my Macbook. So I started organizing all my folders, pictures, documents, videos, etc, and deleting the ones that I don't need. Found this cache folder and on some website, it said most of the stuff in there was junk... I went ahead and deleted everything in there. Everything was running okay and stuff, so I figured it was safe to now delete it officially out of the trash bin. Shut my computer down for the night.... I guess I must have deleted the Firefox 'cache' and I specifically remember for that one, it asked if I wanted to overwrite the current file being used and I said 'yes' and I should have selected no. So basically I lost all my data on my browser... I lost ALL my bookmarks, my saved pages, passwords, all that stuff. UGH! I have tried googling to find out how I can reverse it but I just can't figure out a way. I tried using 'Time Machine' on my computer but I don't think I ever had it turned on... so unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will work. Ah, crap. I really hope I did not screw anything else up. |
That stinks! I am so sorry. :(:( Time Machine only works if you have an external/additional hard drive. If it makes you feel any better, I accidentally deleted the file manager on my first computer when I went on a cleaning spree. Nothing was accessible after that. I had to have it rebuilt. |
I'm sorry Brit. My laptop is in the shop because it got a virus although I'm not sure where I picked that up from sense I dont go to bad sites, the computer lady thinks fb. She is having to take everything off my computer and then reinstall the stuff that came with it but all my games and stuff I will have to redownload. I told her my pictures and music were very important so she is going to make sure they get back on there but thats it rest is my job. Now I am hunched over a small netbook lol |
I don't know about Macs but do you do a backup recovery? On a PC there is a way to actual set your computer back to a previous date. I haven't done it before but I have heard it can be done. You might check into it. |
Sorry about deleting. Have you thought about one of the tech guys that can retreive everything on your hard drive? It's expensive but if you have stuff you really need and want, it is possible. Cherie |
i will look when i get home on my laptop. there is a local computer company here that goes on the radio each morning and gives tips. i have a web site that you are suppose to be able to go on and it tells you how to do this, he said even when its deleted, its not totally deleted, kinda just floating in there somewhere. i will look in a few hours and send you a pm, its worth a shot. |
found it on a piece of paper at work :D pm sent, hope it will do what you need? |
Uh-oh! I hope you can fix that one. |
This is why backing up is SO important! Time machine won't help you any if you aren't using it :p |

Oh well. So far the only thing I lost was all the bookmarks and password memories, etc, in my browser. Ah well  Sucks, I'll just have to re-build.... and re-visit all websites and just enter in passwords and select 'remember' again. |
Can't you go back to a previous date and restore to that point as you can on a PC? |
System restore will bring back only hard drive programs stuff not internet cache stored information. I'm sorry my daughter's friend shut down firefox the other day when I had just updated it and was downloading a program that literally take 14 hours to download! I've so been there and it sucks. I keep a little sticky note with all my passwords and I have a running message thread on FB between my daughter's account and mine where I copy paste all kinds of random information-let's just hope she or I never erase our messages there-like when I pay a bill and get a confirmation # I just type it in a message and send it to her account. |
That sucks!! I've done that before. Now I keep all that stuff saved in a notepad saved on my computer. I just cleaned up mine and came across a different problem. I even bought an external hard drive to transfer my pictures and videos as I was running out of room. So now I have more space on my laptop but I must have done something wrong because now it is running very slow and it seems like it is busy all the time. |
Oh no! I hope you can fix it! I know that has to be frustrating! I have to say though that your post title made me giggle though. I am so bad to do something and say 'I am such an idiot' or tell my husband 'do you realize you're married to an idiot.' And then he'll say 'but the important thing is you're my idiot.' LOL :) Good luck to you! |
I export all my bookmarks to an .html file every few weeks, so if you lose the browser or have to re-instal or put them on another computerl, you can import them back in. (learned this the hard way too :D ) Not sure about macs, but it is under the edit>file>export settings. |
