Any runners? Need running advice.. Hey all, so I just joined a running forum, but unfortunately they are not quite as friendly as you all are here on YT... They jumped on me for my wording of my question and now I'm stuck in an online argument an have yet to find useful advice... So I'm going to pose the same question to you guys... maybe a runner here can help. I have the remnants of childhood asthma and have never been able to run, well now I'm doing agility and I really want to win (I know I'm too competitive), the dog is trained, and ready, I however can't run the whole time with him I collapse in exhaustion. My chest feels a bit tight, so I have been trying to build strength by running. Does anyone have advice for the novice runner? I'm looking for info on training programs, stretches, breathing exercises. etc. |
The link below has a good 8 week training program. The Runner's World 8-Week Beginning Runner's Training Program I would also recommend CHIA seeds :D Raw Reform - The Chia Cheat Sheet by Angela Stokes Good luck! I admire you for wanting to do this for yourself and your pup! |

Do you have any advice for dealing with the cold? it was 14 degrees celcius today, but I've had mornings where its been as low as 8. |
c25k has a lot of schedules and micoach.com even has an app for iphones. Good luck, I walk/run but I'm but I'm trying to increase my running segments. |
Like others have said, there are a lot of great running programs and apps. I did the RunKeeper app and trained for a 10k. I started out run/walking and it slowly increased the running time. Good luck! |
Hi, I'm a runner too! I didn't start running until I was 45 and in the last few years I've done 2 full marathons, a 30k, a 25k, 11 half marathons, 2 13ks, 2 10ks, 1 8k and 20 5k races. I know what you mean about being the competitive sort... I'm addicted to racing! :D Try Running Mania - they're a super friendly group! I've been a member there since the onset of the forum and I can vouch for the fact that they'll be very welcoming and happy to answer your questions - plus there is very little drama there. Just like on YT, many lasting friendships have formed there too. It's a terrific place with lots of information! :) As far as a great book, John Stanton's Running Start to Finish is an excellent resource. It has a lot of valulable information for beginners and seasoned runners alike. Plus there are a bunch of different training programs in the book as well, depending on your running level. I'm also sure if you're a part of Running Mania and put out a call for a plan, you'll get a lot of feedback. People will likely PM you training plans! If you're close to a Running Room store, they have free group runs every Wed and Sat. It's a great way to get out, get your training run in and socialize at the same time. If you're interested, Running Room also offers clinics, which range from "learn to run" beginner classes to ones training for specific distances and/or races. Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your running and happy trails! :) |
I too have severe Asthma ... it sucks I started running after my skin baby was born to shed some lbs...at first I couldn't run 2 feet ...now I run 2 miles a day :D Just keep at it and keep going always always carry your rescue but you can do it you just have to set your mind to it!!!! :D Good luck!!! |
It also sounds like you might need some fine-tuning of your asthma so you can participate without having an asthma attack. |
I am also a fan of the Couch 2 5K program. I have been a runner for years and always encourage people who want to start to try that program first. Good luck, remember to stretch and start slowly, work your way up. |
thanks guys this is great! I cross train with yoga and we just bought an exercise bike (being in Canada I have no idea how I'll like running in the winter). Yesterday I ran 1.4k in 9 minutes. I warmed up and cooled down on the exercise bike, .5k each end of it, it felt good, I only got a stitch right at the end, but honestly it wasn't my lungs it was more in my ribs, so I think I'm in good enough health that the risk of asthma attacks will be substantially lowered once I train more... Now that I've started I'd like to do a small race next year if I get good enough... For those with Asthma, I take Salbutamol "as needed" I have only had to take it once in the past year and that is when I had a cold, the Dr. said it would help fight it better. I appear to not need it for my regular runs (and I use the term run lightly consider its more of a staggering jog/walk :D) If I'm going to have an intense workout such as running and agility course, should I take it before to be safe? How soon before if so? Or do I take it after I run? Normally one would say take it immediately if there was trouble but if I'm on course I likely wont want to stop on the clock and take a puffer. Thanks everyone. :) |
