Anyone use a Invisible Fence? Ok It cost me around $7000. to put the fence up around my yard. I thought the girls were happy!! But not Bell, she wants to be foot loose and fancy free! She has run away twice in the last three days.. I know I'm going to loose her, if I don't do something quick.. So I was thinking an Invisible fence. Has anyone used one?? do they work with Yorkies?? I have tried to train Bell to stay, she is great when she is in the yard or screened area. But the minute she has a chance to run she runs!! Born Free!!! And she runs like she has a mission.. :( |
We don't use an invisible fence but we do have a hot wire up. Haven't had an escapee since. They only tested it the first day and now know that it hurts if they touch it. When I had dogs getting out every other day, and it's the neighbor's responsibility to fix their side of the fence, I had to do something. |
I am afraid of them because it does not prevent other animals from coming in the yard. |
fence I would fence a small play area near the house..the problem with invisable fences is I have heard they are not for small dogs..work well with the large breeds. I bought a shock mat that you put in front of a door way to keep dogs out of a room..never phased them, especailly the small ones, they walked right over it without a shock..the bigger ones would react a bit, but still walk on it to get to the room they wanted in..what is a little tingle on the toes if you want something bad enough..that is the way my Yorkies think! Kimberly, please descibe a hot wire..?? Where is it? |
I used to work at a pet store that sold the invisible fences... People would just rant and rave how wonderulf they are. A lot of the people that bought them lived in subdivisions that wouldn't allow them to put up chain link fences, but they had to do something for their dogs! A lady I work with just had one put in as well.... She has a standard Poodle and a Bichon. She says how wonderful it is. She can just let them out the door and not worry about them leaving the yard. They'll walk right up to the point where the wire is buried and stop. It only took them a couple days to figure out at what point they'd get zapped. She told me one time the batteries in the collar died and the Bichon escaped (they found her again), so you might want to make an effort to check the collar batteries regularly. But, like Patti said, it doesn't prevent other animals from getting into your yard... |
Here is a website that gives some of the con's of an invisible fence. www.dogpatch.org/doginfo/invfence.html  I know my sister did it on her ranch in Wyoming for her 2 Pyrenees and she did extensive training with the dogs. At the end of the day she spent a great deal of $$$ and it doesn't stop her large dogs. I would also be worried about how much shock these little guys could take. It probably would cost you a whole lot less to have a run built for them if you are not outside with them but I am not sure of your situation. |

There is an old doggie door that come out of our garage and my husband put up the wire for me. Chester tried it once, Gracie tried it once and ran in the house and Rebel...well let's just say he's a little stubborn. But like I said, they haven't messed with it since and I haven't had any escape. Plus, if the neighbor gets their own dog, it wouldn't make it far in my yard. The wire runs right by the fence line and it's about 5 inches off of the ground. |
2 Attachment(s) I just took these pictures. In the first picture, the wire running to the right is grounded with a 12 foot pole. It's very cheap to keep one of these fences. We bought the smallest box that TSC had which was around $25. Then you buy the wire...which is the most expensive part of it and then the rebar poles and plastic yellow clasps. |

My neighbor on the next block has an invisible fence, and her Chow (I think) usually sits on the porch and watches the world go by. Sometimes she runs out into the yard when she sees the dogs, but she doesn't even go near the fence. Evidently it works. We just have old fashioned chain link... |

Hey! I was born in SC and spent my early childhood AND early adulthood there! heheh ] Besides, true Southern dialect you woulda' said 'hot ware'!! :D :D |
We have had great succes with our WIRELESS radio fence. I only use it for Cinder though. She is 85 lbs. I would never use one for the tinies! The beauty of the wireless is that if they get out of the signal, it shocks them until they come back in! |

A woman I work with has an invisible fence but she also has a black lab. She said it works wonders. I laugh because when she comes to work with the dog she brings the little flags that line the fence line and put them in her door way. The dog will not go out the door or walk over the flags. I guess it remembers the zap. |
Ok its either an invisible fence or I will probably end up with a dog hit by a car someday! I might not like it, but what can I do!!??!! Like I said in the first thread, I have tried everything. I'm not worried about keeping other dogs "out" as I do have a 6' fence around my whole yard which is plenty of room for the three to run (1/2 acre) Its just Bell runs out every time the darn door is left open for more than 2 seconds. I have people constantly coming and going and she gets out every once in a while. ANd when she does look out she has very long legs and muct easily hit 20 miles an hour!! I will look into the hot wire idea. (TSC =tractor supply company??) Do the dogs have to wear a special collar?? And do you get shocked as well?? I really am looking for something to stop her from leaving through the front door and garage doors.. Thanks for all the input!! |
