Outer Banks NC hurricane on the way Hi Folks, We are currently vacationing on the Outer Banks (Avon, NC) with our 'skin' and fur babies. Hurricane Irene may be hitting on the weekend. Are there any YT members in this area that can tell us what to expect? We have lots of food and water but wonder if we should evacuate even if they don't make a mandatory evacutaion order? Any 'local' opinions would be appreciated...:confused: |
Looks like evacuations have begun: News from The Associated Press I personally would move inland and not try to ride it out on the coast. |
We have friends that have offered to open their homes to us in the Raleigh area. We are now playing 'wait and see'. Hopefully, the hurricane will turn out into the sea. If not I think it will be a category 2-3 which is too big to sit it out (for my comfort level). |
This is a big storm!! It is a cat 3 maybe a 4... I would leave..NOW!! I have been through a few storms... and I can tell you they are not fun and dangerous. If you stay too long you may not be able to leave, if you get hurt emergency crews may not be able to get to you, and even if you are fine would you really want to be there for the mess afterwards.. it will not be a vacation! Please keep us posted so we know you are ok |

I just watched updated tracking. The storm center is headed right to the Outer Banks, possibly at a Cat 3. You need to leave now. |
Please leave now! Don't try to ride it out! Come inland out of harm's way. It's not worth it. |
I would have already packed up my skin and fur babies and headed home while you can. |
I do believe that made it mandatory to evacuate tomorrow. Be safe! |
Please , just pack up and get the show on the road! A cat 3 storm is nothing to sneeze at, and is extremely dangerous the closer to the coast you are. At the very least, you'll be without power, and this time of year you don't want to be without AC or refrigeration. I've lived about 17 miles north of the coast my whole life, and have been through several hurricanes. It can be terrifying going through the storm, and the aftermath is NOT fun, either!:( |
I live in Virginia and the eye of the hurricane is supposed to land right on top of us. We are not taking any major moves yet... It will probably be heavy rain, flooding. But if ur vacating on the beach it might be different. I would wait it out and not take any major moves. U still have a couple good beach days left so get them in before this "huge" huricane comes are way. Ky prayers are out there and that we do not get it hard. |

I just heard mandatory evac for visitors went into effect this morning. Then they will state mandatory evac time for residents. Better get the heck out of there. Be safe, drive careful, they said the roads are packed! |
Do not stay there. I have been through a cat 4 and would NEVER do it again. If you are determined to stay at least get sedatives for the furbabies. They will be terrified. |
This is looking like a really bad one....be safe everyone and hold onto your babies. |
I hope you are already on your way inland: The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is confident that Irene will strike the Outer Banks of North Carolina Saturday evening as a strong Category 3 or Category 4 hurricane. |

I take it you have never lived through a storm like this!! THIS HURRICANE WILL KILL PEOPLE.....DON'T BE CRAZY!! To take any chances is not responsible at all. I was in Miami when Andrew hit... we waited too late to get out.. it was the most terrifing night of my life... people were hurt, and died. The aftermath was horrible, no power, no food, rats..yes RATS in the garbage on the streets...not something you want to go through if you have the option to get out. |
[Definitely disagree. Good beach days left?? "huge" in quotes??:thumbdown After seeing the news.... i agree. I didnt no that they had done mandatory evacuations in NC. Just herd abou that today. I live in Virginia, Norfolk and we are staying put. Hopefully everyones little fur babies will be ok and that everyone stays safe. |
Now nowing that NC is making people evacute, i agree. I did not know that until today. I hope everyone will be ok and that their fur babies will be ok. I am not evacuating because i live in Norfolk, VA and i dont think anyone is... maybe a few. I hope everyone will be ok |
Hi everyone - we are now safely in Raleigh, NC. We are fortunate enough to be able to stay in a condo that my company has that is usually used for executives that travel into the area. The evacuation was mandatory for visitors today and residents tomorrow. I was talking to some locals this morning who are going to ride it out - I hope they will be okay....thanks for your concern. :) |
