Shellac manicures, anyone have them? So Ive been going for manicures lately. I get the shellac and it easily lasts 2 weeks if not 3 (depending on how fast your nails grow out). I LOVE it. It takes the same amount of time as a regular mani, costs about $12 more but lasts 2-3 weeks so its worth it. The color selection is severely limited right now though, although they are coming out with more colors in Sept. Ive been doing them back to back though, getting it removed and getting a new one in a matter of a 1/2 hour. I had a friend who told me she got her 3rd one in 6 weeks (so she was going 3 weeks b/t them as well) and her fingers started itching and then hurting and she had it removed to find out it ATE holes in her nails. She went to the doctor who had seen it one other time on another girl. They gave her antibiotics and it took her nails 4 months to repair themselves. She showed me the pics and its horrible and she said VERY painful. It looks like her nails got super thin underneath and were just peeling away in chunks. :( I just got my 3rd in 6 weeks back to back shellac mani yesterday and now I'm sooooo nervous for this to happen to me. Any nail techs out there who use Shellac? Can you use it back to back like I have? My salon takes it off by applying acetone to cotton, putting it on my nail only and wrapping my fingertip in tin foil. They leave that one for 3 mins then scrape with a metal tool gently. Is this normal? I believe they also put a conditioner on my nails before they put the polish on. I am not a big nail person (but I have long, super strong nails) so this manicure if perfect for me. I walk out with completely dry nails that I can't ruin and they stay for 2-3 weeks solid. I know my BF is going to 'pop the question' sometime in the next few months (we've been ring shopping) and I want my nails done when he does (i'm such a GIRLY girl for this!! LOL) but I don't want to risk ruining my nails either and being on meds and in pain!!! |
Ouch! Bumping this up for you. I stopped getting acrylic nails years ago because it was painful. The buffing hurt. anywhere I went, I was left with cuts all around the nail. I took the time to learn how to give myself a manicure. Really easy, really cheap, and it looks nice. :) |
Yikes! I have being thinking about trying a shellac mannie, because I'm really rough on my nails, and they are the kind that don't hold polish that well (either too dry or too oily). Shellac is the kind that they dry with UV, right? |
My moms salon does the shellac manicures and she gets them done and hasn't a problem with them yet. None of the customers have complained yet, either, and believe me we hear complaints if something went wrong, lol. I was thinking about getting it but now I'm scared! LOL |
I haven't gotten a shellac mani yet, but have been thinking about it, as I'm pretty rough on my nail polish. Now I'm a little leery:eek: Although, your friend may have had an allergic reaction, or a medical condition that caused this to happen to her. All that scraping can't be good, either. Hmmmmmmm..... |
The Salon I go to convinced me to do it once- when I took them off my nails were all ripped and thin underneath like they are after doing acrylics- never again. I kept my nails very short and filed well for a few weeks and they grew out nicely pretty quick. |
I've been doing shellac on my feeties now for a year. No issues whatsoever with my nail beds. I am addicted to it. I do it every 4 weeks and I usually do hot pink and it is shiny and nice the entire time. |

I'mso jealous of all of you who can have pretty nails. Fancy manicures are verboten in my line of work:(. I hadn't heard of the shellac method being used on toes, I may have to try that. I go pretty crazy on my pedicures just to get the "girly" out of my system. Right now my toes are neon green with bright orange daisies on them. |

QS - I couldn't leave the salon without a messed up nail or two when I got a regular mani. I can't do it at home myself because I stink at applying polish and because I can't sit still long enough to let them dry completely. This mani is PERFECT. They are dry when I leave the salon, hard dry, not soft dry. I can immediately dig in my purse and get my keys, I can do anything with them immediately after they come out the UV light. From what Ive read, I get them really cheap here... it's $25 for a color and $30 for a french with the shellac. I really really REALLY LOVE it! For me, so far it's grown out before it's even chipped. Its amazing! You can wash dishes, clean house, work, type, whatever and they do not chip! |

Armani - that is what happened to my friend. Her nails were soooo thin, they peeled in chunks which left holes! YIKES!!! She said she only had it done 3x in a row! She sent me pics today, it was terrible! :( |
What's the difference between the gel and shellac? Ooooooooh, I am dying to get my nails done! The spas are so much better in New York! |

Okay gals, I'm totally shellacked, hands and feet! I was a little bummed about the color selection. I got really dark brown on my feet, which I love. I got dark red for my hands, but I'm not crazy about it. I didn't realize you could get a french shellac, I'll probably do that next time. I love how strong it is! The lady told me I have to go to a drug store and get solar hardener or something?? I couldn't really understand her. BTW, celstu, I completely missed that you will be getting engaged!!! Ring shopping, that's so exciting! I guess your 30s didn't turn out all bad, huh? ;) |
