Big dog and Yorkies!
 

I know some people on here have a strong opinion about this, but I really want a big dog. ( I think) My brother has a boxer and a min pincher, and when I go over to visit Pnut and the boxer get along so well...

Also with Pnut I have noticed when I am dog sitting little dogs, he doesnt really like it. It gets pretty dramatic and jelous. He doesnt like to share me. I know people say that they get use to having another dog around, but I think Pnut likes to be the only one.

Then I started thinking what if I had a big dog..?? Would Pnut act the same. Maybe it will be different b/c a big dog doesnt really lay on the couch with you, they still give you attention and want attention but it is different than a 4lb yorkie... Right?

I am going to be dog sitting my brothers boxer and min pincher for a weekend. The 26th, so I am going to be able to see what it is like to have a bog dog!! I am pretty excited!

I just might want a big dog.. We will see what happenes!!!

Sugar gets along great with my brother's Golden but she HATES my Mom's wiener (and every other wiener she has met, actually :rolleyes:)

So I guess I don't know the answer. It depends a lot on BOTH dogs!

I think it depends on the personality of the big dog. If you do get one maybe adopt an older one so you know its personality. My yorkie grew up with a lab and they got along great but the lab was also already 3 and I knew he was gentle with small things. Also big dogs can be cuddle bugs so beware of that too ;)

I have a Great Pyrenees. He is a big boy too! About 150 lbs. He has never bothered either one of my girls. And they both run up to him when we go outside. But I agree it does depend on the dog. We have been lucky that he is just a great one.

I think for my entire childhood we had a few Chi's at a time with one big dog-I think they were all lab mix rescues and they all got along great.

Princess got along fine with the last lab mix who has since crossed the bridge, but he was a senior & very laid back. She would "insist" he play with her sometimes & he'd politely tell her to buzz off.;)

sugarmamma- LoL Sugar is dramatic! :D I am not fond of the weiner dogs either hehe


ChibiLuv- Ya, I have a lot of things to think about, not sure if a big dog is a right choice for me... Just yet!

BabyGirl Rosie- I love the Great Pyrenees!!! You are so lucky to have one!! They are so sweet and gentle but yet very protective!!

He is very protective! Helps keep unwanted people out of my yard. Lol. He is the biggest baby to us but the hair on the back of his neck will stand up when a stranger shows up. I wouldn't want to make him mad! :D

My son was riding his bike down our road one day. A German Shepard came up to him. He was a sweet dog too but my GP thought he was going to hurt my son and tore after him. He chased that poor dog for miles. Never would let the dog near our house. If it came close to our drive way Shadow would nail him. I love that protectiveness from him.

I am sure he is able to make you feel nice and safe!! Wasnt the GP the sheep protectors? LoL sounds like the GS had a run for his money!!

I would agree -- I think it just depends on the dog. I dogsit a Lab who I will NOT allow off leash with Jackson. He's way too obnoxious and has NO doggy manners and even though he's "friendly" he like full out bulldozed Jackson and it was just a mess. They do fine walking together on-leash though surprisingly.

Now my grandma's Lab, who is 8yrs old, I completely trust around Jackson. She is wonderful with him, very gentle, careful where she steps (but she also lives with a cat so has experience) and Jackson really likes her. I also walk a Rottweiler and he's good with Jackson out in big spaces, like a dog park, but inside the house, I don't think he realizes his size and I don't like loose together in the house. BUT he's also not my dog. I think it'd be different if we were living together 24/7, you know?

Jax doesn't play with big dogs the same though. I think, for his sake, he'd prefer another 10-20lb dog to wrestle with and play with. With the bigger dogs, he doesn't really "play" with them the same way if that makes sense.

They can get along great, you just have to make sure the little dog does not attack and bother the big dog.

I think it can be fine. Some are very gentle when they play, but many dogs aren't. So worst case is the dogs would have to be separated or not allowed to play together. I would not leave a big dog and a small dog alone together.

Ellie is very jealous over other dogs too. I also figured another Yorkie wouldn't be right for our family because of that. They just love laps too much. So for Ellie, a dog that was more interested in playing on th floor was best. Also found out after we got Rylee that she does ok with males. She may not do quite so well with females.

They play rough, and yes, we may have an accident someday. He does overdo it. But there is only 9 pounds difference for them and I have decided that the risk is worth it because Ellie has started to love him. They are becoming friends. She snaps at him lots, but then the other part of the day she kisses and paws at him. Now a part of me almost feels guilty that she didn't have a friend all along. It has made her more active and she enjoys her day. And if he throws her back out or tramples her organs, we'll deal with it. lol. That said, I would not allow her to play rough with a large dog. Way too much risk. I feel like her playing rough with a 15 pounder is risky enough.
