Gardening Experts...Can you identify this grass/bamboo?

We are looking for a bamboo/ornamental grass for a privacy screen in our backyard. While fishing, my hubby seen this in someone's yard and likes it. I've done some searches, but I am not sure what it is. Does anybody know? And, are any ornamental grasses/bamboo toxic to pets? Thanks!

Just showed this to my husband.....he confirms it is bamboo, however does not know what species as there many in the bamboo family. His advice is to take the pic into a nursery and they should be able to identify it. He also said to be careful when planting bamboo as it multiplies rapidly and is difficult to control and should you every want to remove it, difficult to kill.

I believe it is a variety of Giant Cane. The first link is the solid green variety, we have the striped variety, shown in the second link.

Thank you Mardelin. Bamboo is not real popular here. I was kind of hoping it was a grass because we have been told what you say about bamboo. But it doesn't look like any bamboo we've pulled up on the internet. Just trying to find out as much about it as I can before I take it to the nursery.

Here's more information. Arundo donax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I agree with Mary though, it might be best to ask you local nursery what does well there, you can create a monster.

Hi, I was just going to say it looks like a giant cane type. As I live in Hawaii and this is ALL OVER the place. lol If possible if ask your hubby to approach the owner of this place. He might be able to tell him where he got it or he might be able to get a piece of it to transplant (if that is possible). :)

My sister's neighbor has bamboo and it is growing over on to her property. She spends alot of time cutting it back and trying to kill it. She just can't get rid of it. It is taking over her yard! Be careful!

LOL, you know how men are. He was on a fishing trip a few hours away. This is a home on the lake. He thought he was helping by taking a picture then he brings it home and says, what's this? It'll look good in that spot. Ha! Like I'm supposed to know? So, I am bringing it to you, the experts!

Thanks for the replies. It will definitely point me in the right direction, and that's why I am asking. I generally do as much research as I can before I do anything to make sure I don't regret it later and your input has been very helpful. Thanks!

I see you are in Oklahoma, which is not much different than our part of KS. Do you have any problems with yours that you have? Love it, hate it, hard to keep up?

It would make a good privacy screen but it does spread easily depending upon the soil. It's not terribly hard to keep ours cut back to the area intended. It's been very hardy here, even with our drought and high temps. I do like the big plumes it puts off after it starts to mature, I've even decorated with them. It's also nice to hear the wind rustling through it in the evenings.

Ahis_Mama had a great idea about getting a start from someone, that is how we got ours. My husband noticed it growing in a yard, stopped and the owner was happy to share.
