The Vicious Pit Bull I am reprinting it from the USA Weekend. "Thor nibbled on his owner's ear. The Pit bull worked hard to awaken Kemper Hunter and his girlfriend, Sarah Laughlin. Instantly, they understood Thor's urgency. They desperately attemptd to fight th smoke to get to Shelby, their 3 month old baby, but couldn't. The fire departmen arrived to find the panicked couple screaming outside their home, assuming they had lost their baby and their dog in the still - blazing fire. Just then, they all witnessed Thor pulling the bassinet out fhe door to safety. Baby and dog were OK. Last Summer, Hunter, who lives n Bristiol, Ind, told me "I'm convinced if it wasn't for my do, we would all be dead." The fire fighters agreed." So many label these Pits wrongly, but really stories like this show their true loyalty to those they love. I think it's nice to read a story like this rather then the always reading the negative press shed so much on this breed. |
Great story. I don't think all Pits are bad. I think any dog can be made to be "bad" but that is just my opinion. I feel a lot of it is the way the owner wants them to be. However, with that said, I do feel that some of them behave that way because of inbreeding and other issues. I think it is nice to hear a good story about them for once. Thanks for sharing. |
:clapsmile What a beautiful story and a good boy!!! It just brings me to tears thinking of the devotion a dog is capable of giving to his master and his pack! |
For a long time I had the same misconception about the breed that many have. The issue with the breed is because it looks mean they end up in the hands of bad people. The people owning them are those responsible for the attacks, etc. I feel strongly that the breeding of Pits should be banned. Not sure if I would say permanantly but at least until we can put a handle on the shelters so over populated with Pit Bulls. I think if we took a counting of all the shelters I am convinced that we'd find atleast 95 percent in the shelters are Pits or Pit Mixes, especially in areas such as SC and NC. NC by the way still uses the gas chamber and weekly are putting to death by gas not just adult dogs but puppies. It's not the breed that needs to be punished it's the irresponsible owners. I do not believe we are punishing the breed by making it illegal to breed them, but actually helping the breed because if they become unavailable through breeding, then more people will have to go to the shelter to adopt. I'm also a strong advocate of education and training and believe if you want to own a Pit that you must first take an educational class and mandatory training with the dog. Elaine |

And that goes for many other breeds as well. Don't blame the breed, blame the owner. Dogs don't get to choose their owners. |
:clapsmile Wonderful story!! I also agree that it's the owners that should be punished, not the breed. It always makes me happy when I see a responsible dog owner at the dog park. It really seems like there's not many of them...which is really sad... |

What a nice story! |
Thank you for posting this, it's so touching. I love pitties, and am 100% against breed specific legislation or discrimination. It's wonderful to see this positive story about this breed (I should say "3" breeds...since 'Pit Bull' isn't a breed...sorry about that). :) |
Great story...thanks for posting. I wanted to be able to share this so I looked it up. What I found is a little different from the way USA Today reported it. Here's a quote. "A home is destroyed but a family of 3 is alive thanks to Thor, the pit bull being called a hero. Around 3 a.m. Thursday a family slept soundly as fire ripped through their home. Pit bull Thor tried to wake both Kemper Hunter and Sarah Laughlin, asleep on the couch. Neither woke up, so Thor kept barking – even biting his owner, Hunter. “He started barking, it made me upset, so I sat up,” said Hunter. “There it was, our house on fire,” he said. “It's just engulfed in flames and smoke everywhere,” added Hunter. Meantime, Thor was busy. "He had my infant, my 3-month-old little girl, bassinet and all, grabbed by the ruffles and drug to the front door, ready to go. He's a hero, he saved our lives,” said Hunter." Regardless of the details, Thor is a real hero...a regular Rin-Tin-Tin. Ooopps,, almost forgot. Here's a link to the story I referenced. Pit bull warns family, saves infant during fire |

This story is exactly why Pitties used to known as "the Nanny Dog". Thor is living proof that dogs shouldn't be judged by their breed!!! :D:thumbup: |
For all our Pittie lovers, please take the time to write and call Nike and let them know you are not happy with them resigning Michael Vick. And please find another brand to wear. Who wants to help give him a pay check. |
Thank you so much for posting this. I love to read stories like this. |
Pitties are amazing. I think I need a couple. :) |
