Carbonated drinks and bone health I quit drinking carbonated beverages cold turkey. It hurts! My favorite was Sparkling Water with lemon or lime juice. I felt obligated to share what I learned from the Ortho Specialist. In a nushell carbonated drinks have high levels of phosphates and phosphorus and virtually no calcium. When phosphate levels get too high it pulls calcium from the bones. |
I am going to take some inspiration from you and try to quit cold turkey too! How long ago did you quit? I may need a support group. :) My girls were gymnasts when they were younger and their coaches were always harping on them over the dangers of carbonated beverages. |
Thanks for sharing. I never knew that... I stopped drinking carbonated beverages about 2.5 years ago. It was difficult at first but now I don't even miss it. My dh has just stopped drinking them and he's made it about 3 months so far and is doing very well. |

thanks for sharing. I actually read about this in another thread not too long ago. I never knew that about carbonated beverages. I am a soda water drinker. I love cranberry juice with club soda and a lime wedge. Yum. I guess I've got to either give it up or just use a splash. :( I drink a lot of water anyhow, but sometimes, a club soda is just the thing to refresh yourself on a hot, hot day. Man, is there anything left that is good that is good for you???? |
Way to go to both of you! I'd say you are well on your way after making it a week and a half. Don't get me started on GP doctors. |

I've met more people who are soft drink fans who have medical problems of one sort or another. Water is just not that bad! I make lots of infusions in my water - lemons, mint, cucumbers, limes, apples, oranges, whatever. You won't miss the bubbles for very long. Sorry you are going through so much with your leg, but it sounds like you may have a better result overall with the new treatments. |
My cousin is a holistic doctor and he told us about that. My sons and I don't drink carbonated drinks. We like water with a slice of lemon in it. |
Sigh...I've been meaning to give up the sodas, they're the only carbonated bev's I drink. I just need to convince myself that *this* coke is my last. I can do it. |
Good for you! I gave up soda... nine months ago? (I say this with a Coke Zero on my desk). But seriously, I cut way, way back. I used to drink more than a liter per day! I drank soda for the caffeine, so I didn't think it would be a big deal to give up. I also drink tea and coffee. In fact, it was hard! I went cold turkey for four weeks. Three weeks into it, I would walk by a convenience store and it would take all of my willpower not to go in and get a soda. After 4 weeks, I allowed myself to drink them again, but with certain rules. Like, I can only get a soda if I am at the store to get something else, and I have to buy the smallest size available - no more chugging a two liter bottle. I felt so much better after I gave up soda. I would get really bad headaches from the artificial sweetener and I felt completely drained and used up around 3pm every day. I always recommend people cut out soda. |
I saw this article earlier on yahoo. I'm a big pop drinker, Coke forever until recently Mountain Dew-the two worst ones! I've been buying bottled water & haven't bought any pop the last couple of weeks but I've resorted to making kool-aid! I think it's more of a sugar thing with me as I seem untouched by the caffeine. I need to just stick to water, I think support would be great! What happens to your body after you drink a soda every day, for a long time - Healthy Living on Shine |
I love diet soda. I know it's not great for my bones and I do take Calcium supps morning and night...but not sure that makes up for it. One substitue I use is Crystal Light - I love that stuff and it does help me stay away from soda. |
OOOMG!! Not sure I can do it! I drink a Large Perrier Water, at my desk, here at work, Every Morning!! |

Crystal Light? Hummm then we have to talk about the evil artifical sweetners. :whiteflag: Something's gonna get us in the end, might as well be something we enjoy! :eyetearss |

I wonder if there is a crystal lt type mix-drink that doesn't have the aspartame - and then I could just use stevia...? |
I think it is a big picture kind of deal with carbonated drinks. Not only is it the carbonation, but my dr. tells me caffiene also depletes calcium from your bones among other issues with it, and artificial sweeter if it's a diet drink. So her big push was to quit caffinated drinks. For me, that includes my pop of choice. She was not concerned about the artificial sweetner and told me crystal light was the better of the two evils. My logical thinking is however, if I am going to give up a habit why trade it for another one? For now, I hear greet tea is good for you. So, I am considering unsweetened green tea. How boring is that? No fizz, no spunk, and not sweet! :(:thumbdown |

I LOVE CRYSTAL LIGHT, PEOPLE! Okay, I just needed to shout that a little. /shout |
My mom takes green tea bags and brews it in her coffee pot. Then she pours it into a glass pitcher and puts it in the frig and pours it over ice, so I assume she brews it a little strong. I also wonder if you could make it like sun tea...not sure about that though. I really enjoy going there and having a glass so I do think I can convert to that. Crystal light actually makes a raspberry green tea that is very very good! |

Just kidding :). I may have to try this. Does she use stevia or anything? LOL, there I go again. |
Ha ha, I gotchya! Did you see Crystal Light does make some green tea varieties? No, my mom does not add any sweetners of any kind, and I agree.. B-O-R-I-N-G! But then I go back to that one habit for another thing and if I am not going to quit a bad habit for complete healthy then why quit at all. Inner termoil I tell ya! |
Let me say this in defense of tea: you can get all different kinds, so in a way, it's almost like wine. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, though. When I quit soda completely, I drank Hint water. HINT - Naturally Flavored Water, Essence Water, 0 sweeteners, 0 calories! They are really expensive, but I love them. Literally water with an aftertaste of fruit. Super cool and refreshing. |
I am really into Oolong tea lately. It's a diet tea. I like it better than green and I mix it with white tea for the antioxidants. |
All teas are good for you. Green tea may be the best, but all have similar benefits. Sometimes I brew a green tea with a black tea... I don't like the taste of green tea all that much. I love Chai tea. Once one gets out of the habit of sweetners, you may find some teas are kind of sweet. I keep using less and less sweetner each day. I brew a cup of tea and pour it over ice whenever I want iced tea. Kool aid can be made with 3/4 cup of sugar with no difference in the taste. |
Ice teas are a much better solution than carbonated beverages but then you have to worry about sweetners and caffine. :( I grew up drinking chinese black tea and just love it. I didn't drink it for years once I moved out on my own and found the brand mom used to drink and boat a huge container of it. I couldn't figure why I couldn't sleep...then it dawned on me, it had tons of caffine. :(:( Now I pretty much stick with plain lipton--green or decaf teas and brew about 6 or 7 bags in a pot to make a pitcher of ice tea. I do use some Splenda just to give it a slight sweet taste. I tried Truvia and found that it left a bitter after taste. |
hhhmmmm I'm sooooo glad my parents hardly ever let us have soda as kids, my 2 brothers & I kept with that route and do not drink soda except on occasion. Usually if I have soda its because it has rum in it! haha I do love seltzer water with flavor, but even don't drink that too much. Recently I realized it was giving me pain in my sides (gas maybe?) everytime I would drink it. So I started shaking it before opening it to reduce some bubbles and then I just kind of stopped drinking it for the most part. I haven't had one in months. I don't think I would never not drink it ever again, but I think one seltzer water a month will not destroy my bone health, neither will 1 or 2 nights a month drinking rum & coke! Its all in moderation! |
