Titanium implants - life is raining on my parade 3 Attachment(s) Has anyone ever heard of a titanium rod implant breaking for no apparent reason? Mine did and no only am I in terrible pain and really depressed, I am really pissed that I face yet another surgery to ???? I don't even want to know what they are going to do. For your viewing pleasure, here are pics The original break Attachment 345579 The nice new shiny titanium rod which should have been my lifelong friend and helper Attachment 345580 The evil broken titanium rod Attachment 345581 |
I have never heard of that at all. But I certainly can understand you being mad. Are you going to the same doctor? Maybe he can explain why one would break? Seems odd that it would break. I am so sorry you are in pain. I can only imagine how you must be feeling. Are you going to have to pay for the surgery again? (I am sure you are :thumbdown) . Again, I am so sorry this is happening to you. Sending you prayers and hugs!! |
I was told it could happen by my back surgeon when I had my rods put in my back 14 years ago. Not that it is common but there can be defects in the hardware. Keep me updated as to what happens. I am curious to see what the DR. has to say. |
Implants sometimes needs to be replaced if they start to give problems. Your body can reject it as a foreign object. I have a plate and 8 screws in my arm from a bad fall a few years ago and I hope that I never need it removed. If the bone stable? Maybe it just needs to be removed and not replaced? |
I have always heard that titanium is super tough..... kind of strange that it broke, unless that metal was stressed in that area when it was put in..... have you asked the doc about it? Good Luck to ya.... and think about how much better you will feel once it is fixed. |
Yes, a cousin had a rod in his back that broke a few years ago. That looks really painful.... I hope you can feel better soon.... |
That sucks. I had a titanium tooth implant that got MAJORLY infected - leading to infection in my jawbone. That was the worst year of my life. I hope your surgery is once (more) and done!!!! |
Ouch! I am very sorry for your pain and frustration. Titanium doesn't sound like the wonder material that I always thought it was. Hope you can get some relief soon. |
I never heard of that, but I guess anything is possible. I have a Pistol made with a Titanium Frame, and it can take a beating, and keeps firing. Light weight. strong.... Sorry this has happened to you, and hope the bone it was supporting has mended and the removal goes smoothly. Will they be putting a new one in? |
Aw, that's awful! I haven't heard of that before, but I'm not up on my titanium. I'm really sorry that you are in so much pain. Perhaps you should stop punching walls. ;) |
YES Ive witnessed many patients of mine who have had rods placed and then broken. Sometimes they just detach themselves from the bone, other times they break completely, but nevertheless its painful. Unfortunately, nothing is ever 100%. I wish you a speedy recovery from this and to be pain-free soon!! |
Cindy, I'm so sorry that you will have to go thru surgery again. Hopefully this one will permanent and you get back to 110%. Sending good thoughts and prayers for you and big hugs! |
Thank you to all who have posted. It's so nice to know that when life is raining on your parade you have a "YT rainbow of friends" to cheer you up. I guess the "not knowing" is what is so scary. Will they just remove the broken piece? Will they replace it? Will they remove the entire rod? All of these things are running through my mind. - If the rod broke because it is defective, I certainly don't want the other piece to remain, but do I REALLY want them to take it out? - Will I have to have a replacement rod, or did the bones regenerate and heal enough to support me? - Will I EVER spend a pain free day again? - Will I ever have a simblance of my "old life" Thank you for being there -- what a wonderful strong shoulder my YT family is to cry on. |
Oh dear :(. You must be in so much pain, it sounds terrible! You lead such a full life too, so I\'m sure it bothers you greatly to be forced to slow down. I can\'t imagine how it must feel when you\'re relying on very important modern technology, only to have it break down; it must be so frustrating, and also scary. I hope they\'re giving you something for pain :(. The pictures really tell the story. The break in the first pic looks like a very bad break, in multiple places. Then the rod in the 2nd pic looks nice and supportive. And then the 3rd pic, WOW. It looks excruciating. I don\'t know much about Ortho, but I sure hope they can help you asap. I know you hate to face another surgery though :(. You will be in my thoughts, and please keep us posted. I\'m so sorry you have to go through all of this. HUGS! |
Rods can break because of wear and tear on it. Yes, they are usually removed because the broken rod risks damaging the surrounding tissues and blood vessels. Only the Orthopedic Doc will be able to say for sure whether or not there was enough healing to go without replacing it. It really depends on the initial fracture. Even when bone heals, it\'s not as strong at the repair sites as the surrounding bone. So, if there were multiple fracture sites, they might not want to risk not replacing the rod. What ever you decide to do there is no reason to live in pain. Insist on good pain management, including seeing a pain specialist. I\'m not sure where you are in Georgia, but the group at North Fulton Hospital has been an enormous help to me. |
