Baby Canaries 4 Attachment(s) Saturday morning, I got a call from a lady that owns a pet store. She had gotten up that morn to find her mom canary dead and there were two little ones that were becoming quite weak. She was wondering if my canary would tend to them, so I went up and got the babies. I fed them right away because they were growing weaker by the minute. Got them going on food and a little stronger and then put the nest in my canary cage. That didn't work, so I have been hand feeding them ever since. They were 1 week old when I got them...naked of any feathers and looked like little space aliens. Now they are beginning to get feathers and I'm sure, in another week, they will be fully feathered. I'm in love with these little darlings. Their eyes opened the second day I had them so now they think I'm mom! LOL I feed them every hour to hour and a half, except at night. I've got some pictures and will post more here as I get them. I feel pretty confident that I will get these little ones to adulthood! |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a picture from yesterday! They have grown by leaps and bounds! |
OMG! It's been a while since I've seen ones that little! They look great!:D |
Connie, you're an angel. You saved them! They really are starting to get their feathers. I'm excited to get a chance to follow their development.:) |
Connie they are coming along nicely with your loving care. Can't wait to see them all feathered out. Those are going to be some nicely tamed babies. |
Wow they sure look funny without feathers. I had no idea you were so talented Congratulations! |
oh, what gorgeous little babies, i LOVE the pics with there mouths wide open :) , you are doing a great job, really nice ! |
How prescious!! Your pics brought back many fond memories...as I have successfully hand raised 2 baby canaries as well. It was years ago. The parents just wouldn't feed them. So...I took over with a dropper and pet store baby bird gruel. It was so much fun to watch them grow and to see if any were males. I ended up with one of each. Good luck with your babies!! I will check back for new pics as they grow. |
Oh Connie! You are a Canary Angel! They are simply precious! |

Their feathers are coming in quickly. Have they whistled mommie yet?:D |
Just saw this thread...what a great job you are doing with these two little ones!! They look so contented. Give them a little scritch from me! |
When I was little, I tried to feed a baby bird. If I remember correctly, the nest had been blown out of a tree during a storm. It died.:( My next encore came when I tried to save a baby rabbit. It died, too. In fact, I had a funeral for it and buried it in a little shoe box in our orchard.:( I'm sure you'll be much more successful than I was. |
Connie, they are so ugly-cute! :) |
Awww, how sweet! i will enjoy watching your babies grow up! |
4 Attachment(s) Day 8 and the babies are experiencing their first blizzard. Winter just doesn't want to quit this year! They have grown so much and getting close to being all feathered out. They are such fun and soon I will have to put their nest into a bird cage, as they are starting to bat their wings and will need a little more room. I just love these little darlings! |
I've been seeing your state on the weather map and show in the area! We're even in for a cool front here in Texas with weather predicted to be in the 40's some nights! Your little feather babies are adorable!!! |
The babies are growing like weeds!! They look great!! |
awww, i love seeing them grow :) , one has darker feathers on the head. so precious! |
I lopve watching them grow.:) |
What a special person you must be. Not many people would dedicate so much time to making sure little birds get a chance of life....you did and I so admire you for it well done indeed. |
They are getting cuter!!! I see the black spot on the ones head that you mentioned last night. You are a great "mom" |
I think one of them is beginning to look like you. Lol |
I've never seen a baby bird that young before. It is quite amazing the transformation they go through. Thank You so much for caring for them and sharing their pictures with us!! It is so cool to see the formation of the feathers, they looked like little spikes at first, lol. I've never been that great with birds but I did raise 2 wild baby bunnies that were only a day or so old. It was fun and a bit exhausting but well worth it. In the end we were able to release them back into the wild. |
