Okay, I need help with a good turkey recipe, any help here? Once again, I am cooking thanksgiving at my house. Last year I cooked the meal too but I wanted to try a different recipe, I have seen several but I thought it would be better to get one that someone I know has tried and works! Plus I am sure there are many people here with the same question.. So let's hear them!! P.s Recipe's for the turkey!! |
bump, bump, umm, bump |
Eat out ? :) Moms house ? Cousins ? I don't really have a recipe for Turkey .... but with stuffing - I grind hazelnuts and add it to the dressing - along with a TINY bit of jalopeno peppers - again - sliced really tiny - it's really really good and adds a little crunch & heat to the stuffing..... |
I don't have any turkey recipes...I cooked Thanksgiving dinner at my house ONCE when I was in my early twenties and swore I'd never do it again! I kept my word :D Last year my husband got a free turkey and he deep fried it. You can buy the cookers that come with the peanut oil and everything, a kit, at Walmart. It sounds like it would be greasy but it isn't. If you've never eaten a fried turkey, it is DELICIOUS!!! When baking it in the oven it's hard to keep it from drying out...Just a thought that maybe you had not thought of and I highly reccomend it :) |
Yup, we've done the peanut oil thing, I might go that route again, you now reminded me of why we fried it rather than baked it... thanks!! But I am still open to suggestions |
I use the foil wrap method to cooking my turkey. It comes out very moist and you can reduce to cooking time. I unwrap the top for the last 30 minutes to brown. |
After eating fried turkey, I'd never go back to baked. |

I feel the same way Kim, plus it gives the guys something to do other than watch t.v and gives more breathing room since they are in charge of the turkey cooking, I am going to check to see if Sam's fryer prices.. |

Go to Sam's and buy a smoked turkey!! Can't be beat! |
You can always check out Foodnetwork.com or Allrecipes.com, they have some great turkey recipes to try out, also they have great feedback. I am scared to cook a turkey lol, I make a great ham but I leave the turkey up to the real chef in the family ;) |
I use this recipe every year. I use this recipe every year and it makes the best turkey. Plus the turkey always looks like the ones in magazines perfectly brown and everything. The key is STRICTLY following the recipe down to every detail. I am promising you it will be perfect and taste delish!!! http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jh...&id=recipe1656 (you can buy the cheesecloth at wal mart) |
I cooked mine in a roaster last year and it turned out really good. |
Here's one I like: Preheat oven to 350 degrees: 1 turkey washed and patted dry 2 c. cornbread crumbs 2 cans chicken broth 5 slices white bread crumbled 1 onion chopped fine 3 stalks celery chopped fine 2 tsp. Sage 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 3 cups UNCOOKED popcorn Mix all ingredients together except the turkey. Stuff the turkey with the mixture and bake uncovered for at least 3 hours, or until the popcorn blows the a** off the turkey! |
Surely there are more ways to cook a turkey? |

I've been cooking our turkeys in REYNOLDS COOKING BAGS. Its so simple any kid could do it and it comes out so professional looking. Give the bird a wash, pat dry, and rub oil on the skin, sprinkle with Mrs. Dash and ut it in the oven and FORGET IT........ For an 18 lb turkey it will probably take 4 hrs to cook in the bag. ITs amazing how the turkey browns without basting, stays moist as all the juices are right in the bag, easy to syphon the juice out of the bag to make the gravey, no messy pans to clean. I've never had anything go wrong with all the ones I've cooked thru the years. Just wanted to add my method in the thread. You won't be sorry you tried it, its so simple and no fuss. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on YorkieTalk ! |
Yorkie24, do you also put it in a pan with the bag or not? this turkey is 12 lbs...how long do you think? |

Have you ever cooked a turkeyy breast side down? You cook it over night at 225 degrees and place it in the pan breast side down. No stuffing put your onions and celery on the bottom of the roasting pan just like normal. I put it on about 9 pm and by 10 am the next morning it is done. for a 12-15 pound bird. The white meat is very moist and not dry casue it was in all tthe juice from the turkey. Will drive your family crazy smelling it cook all night |
I had forgotten but have also heard good results from cooking the turkey breast side down!! When I cooked my first and only turkey ever, I left the yuckie stuff that is bagged up and stuck on the inside of it in it when I cooked it...didn't know it was there in the first place :D |
Cindy, If you can buy Reynolds Oven Bags at your local supermarket there are picture directions with them. Its all so very simple to follow. To cook a 12 lb. turkey stuffed it would take about 2 1/2 hrs, less if not stuffed. The best part is you just Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, Place the turkey in the bag and close with the nylon tie that comes in the pkge, Cut six 1/2-inch slits in the top of the bag for steam to escape. Tuck ends of the bag in the pan. Place the pan in the oven allowing room for the bag to expand during cooking without touching the heating elements, walls or racks. The oven bag should not hang over the pan. Then you Bake according to the recipe chart. To serve , carefully cut open the top of the oven bag, I syphon out the juices and use them for gravy making. The turkey stays moist, the liquid is all in the bag and no messy pans to clean. It even browns itself while its cooking so no need to baste. To me, its the "simplest" way for a no fuss turkey meal. If you want to learn more about those oven bags visit http://www.reynoldskitchens.com It comes out great everytime! Happy Thanksgiving !! |
I know this is a bit late but yes I Always cook my turkey breast side down and it comes out Great! I usually have a truss or rack so I can lift it out and turn it over the last 30 minutes to brown the top. One word of caution- I have read if you don't cook a turkey at 325, the internal temp doesn't get high enough to kill bacteria. |
