Should I or Shouldn't I? Run/Walk for Donate Life
 
I'm registered to participate in the Run/Walk for Donate Life next Sat at Cal State Fullerton. Long sad story, but I'm participating as one of the donor families. The official word from the organization on pups participating is:

Should I take Kaji with me? He scares easily, but he's doing much better when in a crowded place. But I'm not too convinced on whether or not to take him. Or even what he'll wear if I do take him. :p Thoughts?

Nice of you to do this. What a great cause.

It would be nice to have an 'out' if you bring him and he seems upset. You wouldn't want to quit the walk yourself, but if you could pass him off to someone else who could remove him from any stressful situation that might solve any problems.

Or a backup plan: How about a backpack carrier he could be placed in, or -- don't tell anyone I suggested this -- a baby carriage? I wouldn't do the baby carriage because, well, I'm a macho guy. But I've seen them work effectively in crowds for less-macho people.

Bottom line is to make Kaji a priority and don't trap him in a situation that is gonna stress her out for a prolonged period.

The campus says no. So I wouldn't bring him.
I'm participating in the Relay for Life this year. I don't know if dogs are allowed but I think Merlin won't attend.

You're right. He hides in his carrier when it gets to be too much for him. My dad also told me it stresses him out to be home without me on a Sat. Guess these little guys can learn to tell the days of the week. :p

Ute: He's been to that campus before. My lil bro goes there. The campus police just swoon over his cuteness. :)

How long is the walk? I know my boys would love the walk but if its more than 2 miles, it would be too much for them. After 2 miles, they are pretty exhausted and I can't carry them for too long. I would leave my boys at home for that type of activity. Have a great time no matter what you decide to do! :)

Well, I know for me, I'd bring him. I bring him to pretty much any event like this where he's allowed. But that's because I know he can easily walk 5 miles and he's so used to big crowds and events and things of the like. If he was really stressed out, I'd question bringing him, but I know he can handle things like that.

If he is already scared in crowded places I would not bring him....he could get stepped on because no one is going to know to look down to see a dog. I wouldn't bring him.....too many people!

A lot of those Relay for Life events are really, really crowded. I know that Lucy would not enjoy that ~ even though she does enjoy her walks.

I think the poster who advised it would be nice if you had someone to 'pass him off to' if you need a way out.

I probably just wouldn't bring Lucy because that many people walking around her and close to her - she would be scared.

Is this your first time participating? Just curious, cos if you'd been before it seems like you would have an idea about how the event is.

Our Relay for Life is a two day event held at a local high school track and we walk around the clock in shifts. While it's alot of fun, it's a long time commitment event, very hectic, with alot of people & alot of feet, and not something I'd take my pup to.

I do wish there were more events I could take ZoE to. I'd happily sign up for any local walking fundraiser that allowed me to walk with my pup

I've never been before. We were suppose to participate last year, but something happened and we just didn't. Ours isn't a relay, it is just a walk or a run. We choose to walk 1 km or 5 km. There will be two of us to hold Kaji is it gets to be too much for him. I wanted to take him because my dad tells me Kaji is way too stressed to relax when he knows I'm suppose to be home but I'm not there.

Aww! Levi and I went to our Donate Life walk a couple of weeks ago. He had a great time, but he is super-social. My best friend's dog, however, hates to be in public and hates to walk...so he rode in a backpack the whole way. Could you bring a carrier of some sort in case Kaji gets scared? That way he can walk if he feels up to it, or ride along if he needs to feel more secure.

I attached some pictures from out Donate Life walk. Maybe that will convince you to take Kaji! :)

Kaji would love it if there are other dogs. Did they give you the bandanas at the event?

There were lots of other dogs at our event, and probably 4-5 of them were Yorkies. Levi had such a good time. And yes, we got the bandanas there. All the pups looked super cute wearing them!
