Help,I'm gonna ruin the kids clothes. So many of you know I have custody of my brother(11) and my sister(17) we have been stumbling around the everyday stuff and getting along pretty well its been almost a year. now I have a problem I cant seem to find a solution to STAINS My brother comes home with sweat stains on his undershirts I cant get out there is makeup on all my bath towels and just this week my sister came home with a huge coffee stain on the arm of her favorite sweatshirt (she soaked up some coffee on the lunch table with the arm of her sweatshirt) when i washed the stain and could not get it out she got mad at me yelled and screamed and told me I was a horrible parent then went to her room and cried I did talk to her but she was still mad, I called her therapist and he told me it "was just one of the joys of raising teenagers" so If anyone could help me find something to get the coffee stain out I would really appreciate it (I'm afraid to keep trying things Im afraid it will ruin her sweatshirt) Thanks |
I use Goo Gone (buy it at Walmart) for a lot of laundry stains. It works on a lot of other things too....like a crayola drawing on kitchen cabinets (present from a very young and creative granddaughter). Goo Gone is inexpensive and I let it soak in a while for tougher stains. Hope this can be of some help to you. |
What color is the shirt? All of my whites I use bleach in my laundry and it works well. I'm not great at explaining it, but I run the water for like 5 min on the white cycle, put the detergent in, then 2-3 "glugs" of bleach. I really don't know how I measure the glugs though. Then I put in the dirty towels and dish clothes or shower curtain into the water first, then the rest of my whites on top, *knock on wood* I haven't ruined anything yet, but make sure anything important doesn't go directly into the concentrated bleach water. I wash my lululemon white sweatpants in this, and they've come out safe, cause the water mixes it around and stuff. If it's colored I have no idea though... sorry, I'm inexperienced in the stain department, as you can tell by my such technical instructions. Good luck. |
First off wash all but white clothes in cold water. You simply must have a can of GOOP. It's fantastic at getting any stain out. I raised 6 sons and I couldn't count the different types of stains they ended up with. Work the GOOP into the stain and just let sit overnight. For white clothes, first run them thru. a cold water rinse with a little BIZ or a little laundry detergent. Then run them in a hot water wash/cold rinse, with a little detergent and maybe about a 1/4 cup of bleach. Never put hot water on dry clothes because it only sets in stains. |
Try soaking in oxyclean, it works great for stains. |
You probably know it's not so much about the stain. Or even your parenting skills. No matter what the circumstances, they've been through a huge change and that's always hard to adjust to. You might try this for info about the coffee stain: HowStuffWorks "How to Remove Coffee Stains" Why not involve your sister in the decision? You could explain to her that you know it's her favorite and you really want to fix it right. If she's included in researching what to do and carrying it out, she can't exactly blame you. Plus at that age it wouldn't hurt her to learn to be responsible for her own laundry. Makeup on all the bath towels? Why is she using bath towels to wipe her face? You could try those disposable make up remover wipes and tell her a) it will save the towels and b) it will be better for her youthful skin. For sweat stains: HowStuffWorks "How to Remove Sweat Stains: Tips and Guidelines" Come to think of it, I went through a period where I was very angry at my wonderful parents when I learned that they didn't have all the answers. My mom's solution was "let's sit down and figure this out together." It worked pretty well, and that was even before the internet. |
Since the sweatshirt has been washed and dried the stain will be more difficult to get out. Try blotting the stain with a cloth soaked in white vinegar/water mix (tblsp vinegar/qt water). Then sprinkle a little baking soda on the stain, dampen a clean cloth and rub in the baking soda. Now wash the shirt per the label direction. Before drying again, if the stain isn't gone, try using a cloth dampened with hydrogen peroxide, blotting the stain...be careful though and try on an inconspicuous area of the shirt first. If all else fails, replace the sweatshirt:)..... with instructions that any future staining needs to be brought to your attention before the item is washed.;) |
Thanks everyone I wrote down all the tips I have gotten and I'm gonna try one at a time until somethings works If i could replace the sweatshirt I would But She picked it up at a goodwill right after she come to live with me It is mostly white but does have some pattern on it so I cant use bleach Ill let everyone know how it goes but I am always open to more tips |
