Anyone use/recommend a mattress topper thingy? We have a really nice pillowtop mattress. But for the last several months, I'm waking up with super sore shoulders and hips. I'm a side sleeper, so I know this can stress out the joints. I'm wondering if a mattress topper (is that what they're called?) would help cushion the stress-areas of the body more....? I don't want a feather bed, but am possibly looking at a foam-fill, or foam pad, or memory foam...etcetera. Are they helpful or just bleh? |
For me, the firmer the mattress, the better. I do better with extra support. Feather beds, foam mattresses, and water beds leave me aching. I'm a side sleeper too. |
We've had a Tempurpedic mattress for several years and I love it. They aren't cheap but they are worth the money in my opinion. They have a new one now that doesn't hold your body heat as much and we might look into that one at some point too. I sleep more sound on the Tempurpedic than I do our pillow top mattress. |
Forgot to add, that even a pad topping of any kind leaves me aching. It's probably a matter of personal preference. |

Ann, I heartily recommend getting one of the thin (2-3") memory foam mattress toppers to start out with. DH and I got one from Sam's Club several years ago, and it has made all the difference (for me, anyway!) The thin ones are not that expensive and are much easier to use, turn, clean, etc. Also, they are not so thick that it requires all new bed linens, either. :D |
I got a 2" thick HIGH QUALITY (higher density foam) "eco" memory foam mattress topper a couple years ago and it is amazing. I got the "eco" one because it's not made from petroleum and I was worried about off-gassing. It smelled for about a couple days (but not the vinyl smell) and then stopped. I put it UNDER my mattress pad/mattress protector, just for an extra layer of a cotton barrier on top of the foam. We got a king size for about $90 on Amazon. Our bed is 6 years old, but is a good quality Simmons. We weren't ready to replace it and I was afraid to get another pillowtop just to have the foam collapse again. The springs still provide support, I just needed the memory foam to cushion my body for my hip, back and shoulder pain. Even if we get a new mattress I would still buy another topper for it. I love it. |
