For those who sew I am thinking of sewing stuff for my babies and was wondering if those who sew can suggest some brands and makes? Thanks! :) |
I find Kwik Sew patterns are very good. I live in Hungary so my daughter sends them to me from New Zealand. She has just sent me a McCall's Craft one. I use some cheap fabric first and roughly make it up then try it on them. That way I can alter the pattern to fit Sylvester or Lili. |
Thanks for the reply!! :) Sorry, I totally didn't realize that I meant brand & make of sewing machines for beginners... I think I need sleep :p |
oh I love to sew. I used to sew for my daughters, but they won't wear what I make so now I have Remy :p:D I have a couple of basic patterns -- I looked for a vest pattern and added a ruffle or skirt. I have a viking embroidery machine. It is old now, but when I first bought I could have paid for a year of college for one of my girls... please don't tell dh I also have an Elna.. basic good sewing machine. You want one that has the basic features, straight stitch, ziz zag, button hole et. of course some do everything but change your bed sheets.. but be honest will you use all that? A surger is the overlock machine and is great if you will be sewing knits and such. So.. viking, Elena, brother are all good brands. If you are not experience in sewing try to find a local shop that gives lessons with the machine. I look forward to seeing pictures of your puppy's new outfits. I put some that I made on my page.. Perreila was the member who got me started. |

That's the brand I could not think of!!! I think Janome is owned by viking now? Also for overlock... I don't like my singer, Janome has a great one!!!!!!!!!!! The viking I have is the Designer one series |
The best thing for me was to find my local sewing center, set up a time to go in, then go in and test drive all the machines that had the features I wanted:D If you buy from a place like this you should also receive a few lessons with an instructor to get you started. Have fun,it's addictive! |
LOL, oh yes I did Lil sis...I got you started and now you are on a sewing frenzy. I love all you outfits. You know I so love the one in your avatar. OP good luck with sewing for your baby...you will really get into it once you start. I would like to do more of it, but with working and my being lazy after hours, I don't do as much as I would like to. I would like to buy an embroidery machine, but can't decide which one I want to get. Any suggestions, I want it just learn to embroidery with it. |

I have a designer one..by viking. Brother has a nice .. Bernina is very nice also.. expensive but good quality. Bernina has a great overlock also. |
I have the Designer One by Viking, too. It's a bit much to handle for a sewing newbie, though. There are a lot of good machines in the Viking line that aren't as complicated. Tip: I know they run the sewing/quilting expos in So Cal quite a bit. They bring in brand new machines for each expo and sell them at a big discount afterwards. They still come with the full warranty. If you find a model that you like, talk to the sewing centers in Joanne's. They'll help you buy one of the lightly used machines (usually less than 4-8 hours) at a great price. |
I have an older viking embroidery machine that I use as my main machine, then I have a basic brother machine that I use for fastening everything. I keep my finishing thread on it all the time so I don't have to keep re-threading my machine. I bought a brother serger last year and love it. I am still learning how to use that. The Brother machine that I have is not the very basic model but the next one up from it, several stitches but not computerized. There was a really nice one above it that was computerized-t wasn't overly expensive and it looked like a good beginner machine. I would recommend something like that so it's not so basic and you will grow with it for the inital learning curve. I also have an older Bernina that I found thru a friend who belongs to a quilt quild. The owner passed away and the husband was finally starting to clear things out. When I went to pick up the machine, he had 3 shopping bags of threads, feet and accessories plus a sewing table waiting for me. I have been practicing on this on and off. |

Some joanne stores have classes.. or your local college or night school. I agree.. viking is great and they have all level.. get one that has some features and even if you upgrade latter to a emboridery machine it will be a good basic machine to keep. Please remember a top of the line emboridery machine could be 8,000.00--maybe more (I have not priced one in a while) a good basic machine that will meet all your needs should start at (just guessing) $300.00 ish -- |

This may sound stupid, but what's the difference between an embroidery machine and a sewing machine? What's a computerized sewing machine? I didn't know there's SO MANY varieties...I'm thinking of getting a Singer or a Brother basic sewing machine...what do you think?? It will take me awhile for my work to look like yours though! |
