Looking for suggestions of what to do in Savannah GA Hi all, I know it has been a long time since I've been here but teaching is keeping me pretty busy. Oh and Layla turned FIVE yesterday!!!! Ok on to my question- my family and I are going to Hilton Head Island this coming week and plan to spend a day in Savannah GA- can anyone recommend places to go, things to see, where to eat? Thanks all! |
The Pirates Cove is an awesome restaurant. I've heard that the Paula Deen place, The Lady and Sons, is good too (but you have to get in line early). I highly recommend you do one of the trolley tours around the squares so you can get an idea of where everything is and map your day out accordingly (you can get on and off the trolley at the different stops). Definitely visit some of the historic homes there. I'll tell you what NOT to do. There is a bar on the wharf called Wet Willies. They have a drink there called the "attitude adjustment". My brother had told me to get one for my husband while we were there. I did, but he didn't care for it so we switched drinks (I was having a pina colada). It was a hot day and I was thirsty so I kind of gulped it down. Let's just say that my kids still give me a bad time about the time mom got "too happy" in Savannah. :D |
We went there about 2 years ago and you have to do the horse carriage tour of the city. It's about 1 hour and you get a great tour and learn the history of the city. We shopped at the little store connected to Paula Deen's restaurant but the wait was too long to eat there. |
Been to Savannah GA 2X, early Dec/anniversary and early July/JB's BDay. The trolley is a great way to see the city w/o having to drive around. Take in some of the many squares in the center of town. The Girl Scout House is there. Paula Deen's was OK but awfully crowed. We/I liked the little eateries along the water front where one can watch the river traffic. Suggest you and your family try the Chamber of Commerce for good ideas but then we usually ask the "locals" and have not been steered wrong. Doing Central Florida again this winter?:D |
Well, happy birthday Layla!:D I love Savannah! Savannah Events and Festivals in March - Savannah, Georgia (GA), USA St. Patrick's Day Celebrations - March 17th, an annual event marking the official day with a giant parade. Spilling over into the closest weekend, the event frequently draws more than 250,000 guests. Savannah celebrates the life of Ireland's most famous character with style and gusto. Savannah Music Festival - mid to late March, Savannah's annual music festival is a two-week affair held in the historic district. Regional, national and international talents are on-hand to provide guests with musical performances from a variety of genres including jazz, world, blues and classical. |
Tybee Island is just a few minutes from Savannah and the beach is beautiful. Also the cemetary in Savannah is quite famous. The shops down town are quaint and the ones by the river are unusual. |
I agree on the cemetary and if you are adventurous the ghost tours are a lot of fun. Paula Deen's restaurant usually has a long line on the weekends so if you want to go get there early. Tybee Island is awesome, very pretty. |
My grand daughter just moved to Savannah and I can't wait to go visit. Yes, the cemetery is the one from the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. That whole book is Savannah based. Have fun and let us know about interesting sites you saw. |
