furbabies viewing the outside world At my last home, with my previous yorkie, I had my builder custom build a boxed out window in my living room, that was only a foot of the ground, for my yorkie. She used to love sitting on it & watching the world go by. I also had large sliding doors going out to the back yard and she'd sit & watch the golfers go by. Now, my kids are both off at college, I downsized to a lil prebuilt house and while I love it, all the windows are high off the ground (approx 26 inches or more) and there are no sliding doors. I'd like to buy/build some kind of perch at the living room window so my new pup can see out. Did anyone else have this kind of issue? If so, how did you solve it? Being that it's my living room, I'd like something that looks nice and blends with my traditional decor. If anyone has pics of something that might work, I'd love to see them :) Thank you! |
My father built a little perch/platform for my boys to look out my bedroom window to the front yard and street. The window is only a foot from the floor, but Teddy was spending almost 2 hours each morning standing on his tippy toes to watch all of the activity out front. The perch is probably more like the first one you built. We call it "the reviewing stand." :p For your new one to accommodate your higher windows and still be safe for your pup, you will probably need stairs. Is your new pup a jumper or climber? You might have to incorporate something into the design to prevent jumping...something like a mini-pup deck for the window. Looking forward to seeing other people's designs. |
I don't have pics but my den window was long and tall but high off the ground for my Yorkie Jilly to enjoy. I had a "Jilly's Window" made. I contacted a contractor, he removed the large, high old window, removed bricks down to the level I wanted, remodeled the entire opening and put in two energy-efficient tall windows side by side. The couch backs up to this enlarged window right at the window-sill level and between the top of the couch and the large window sill, Jilly could lie in the window on her special pillow and survey her kingdom of the back yard from up high. I could raise one or both windows when the weather was nice and Jilly at the time would lie in the window for hours and enjoy the outside, even when it was raining. Once I lost her, I could hardly stand to even look at "Jilly's Window" as it reminded me so of all the time she spent there. Now that I have Tibbe, he does the same thing and spends many hours a week lying in "Jilly's Window". It cost about $2,200.00 in 2003 but it was well worth the money. I have windows in the front of the house that practically reach down to the floor so the front of the house was okay for a Yorkie to watch out but it was the back of the house that needed a special "Yorkie" window. Happy Yorkie - happy homeowner. |
How about buying those platforms for cats that easily attach to the window cill, then just put a stuffed chair by it so they can just climb on up. Cat Window Perch - Pet Supplies - Compare Prices, Reviews and Buy at NexTag - Price - Review |
Maximo - I like the lil deck idea :) It's got me thinking about getting a sofa table and shortening the legs to the window height, making a padded top for it that coordinates with my throw pillows, and building steps up to it. I love DIY projects and have a tool collection that most men would be jealous of & am pretty good at copying things, but I'm not real creative about coming up with ideas myself. yorkietalkjilly - when you wrote you could hardly stand to look at "Jilly's Window" after you lost her, I had tears in my eyes. I was the same way. Ours was Chelsea's window and she passed away two years before I sold that house. As beautiful as the window & the view out it was, every time I looked at it, it made me sad that Chelsea was no longer with us. I'm glad we both now have new babies to love:) |
I put a couch in front of the windows, now my babies just sit on the back of the couch staring out! :) hehe |
Steps Hi, I purchased some Doggie steps. I got mine through LTD Commodities but have seen them also on E Bay. Molly LOVES looking out the picture window. I put her extra bed next to the steps so she can just hop off her steps safely.:aimeeyork |
