Ok, now that I have turned 50 I recieved a card from AARP.:mad: Does anyone have this and should I get it???
It is only $16 a year but I don't know if I would use it. Please help :confused:

AARP used to be very good for discounts on things like hotels. My father dropped his membership because he no longer supports their position on many senior issues. We rely on AAA (auto :p) for discounts now.

oh heck yes!!! I'm 43, so can't get it yet, but my parents do. Great discounts and awesome magazine with health, investment & retirement info. I love reading them when I visit :)

I would never get it, as I disagree with many of the issues they support. Besides while I am physically old enough, mentally, I am still a kid.

When it comes to hotel discounts, you really don't need AARP.

When we hit the road and take the dogs, the hotel choices tend to be very limited so I do a lot of looking online at all the chains when I'm making reservations. In every case, the hotels that offer a special AARP rate also offer a generic "senior" rate that is exactly the same as the AARP rate.

I'm not really sure what is to be gained by AARP membership, I've never seen any advantage. They sell insurance and other financial instruments, like annuities (which are a rip-off in my opinion, no matter who is selling them). They claim to advocate for seniors, but if you disagree with their position (like me) then there is no reason to be a member. If you do agree with them, then the membership might be worth it to you.

I thought I could get discounts in stores and such. I was very hesitant to even open the envelope 'cus I'm just a kid like you. Who needs retirement information and all that grown up stuff? I think I will pass.

My mom is impressed with AARP. Uses it for their insurance and other offerings. She said it's very worth it and the help try to pass legislation for seniors, etc. They are legit and trustworthy.

AARP does have some great benefits for its members. Auto and health insurance is tops with them!

You get 20% off at Denny's with an AARP card... I found that out recently (yes... I have a card....;)). It was actually a real pleasant experience for me showing the card... the cashier couldn't believe I had a card... she thought I was around 40 years old!!! :coolsmile

I am an AARP member and have saved quite alot over the years. I first got it because it saved me more than its cost on my AOL bill. My last trip to see son at college, I saved $25 on the hotell bill. I'd go to their site & look through their discounts to see if it would be worth it to you.

Thank you! That's also the way I feel, but wasn't quite sure how to explain it. ;) Also, as for the hotels, we also take Toto everywhere with us. My advantage is that my Patrick is a "negotiator" and we usually always get very good room rates and being a "Priority Club" member doesn't hurt either. Bottom line ... to each his own. ;)

One thing you may not know is AARP throws one heckofa party every year. Their annual convention is in the fall; rooms & airfare are cheap and they pack the 3 days with top-rate entertainment and educational seminars. My (younger) husband and I have had great times in Boston and DC courtesy of AARP. The tours are well-organized and provide access to stuff you may not see on your own.
This fall AARP is in LA, but next year the convention is in New Orleans. Bourbon Street...here we come!
BTW...these people know how to party; there were many female attendees without spouses who were having a blast with sisters or best friends.
In Boston we enjoyed a father/son discussion with Kurt Douglas and Michael Douglas, then a session where Whoopi Goldberg interviewed Maya Angelou. Before the past presidential election, I met Hilary Clinton and enjoyed a mother/daughter session with Joan and Melissa Rivers. Way cool!
