Dentist, Oral Surgeon, Or Someone Else?? If you had a tooth that continued to become abcessed even after a root canal, and a history of previous serious infection of the facial bones, would you continue to go to a dentist? Or would you seek further medical advice, and if so who/where? This is for my daughter, who is in a college town and needs to make an appointment there because she can't get home. I am not sure at this point where/who to advise her to go. Where would you start over, medical or dental? I am concerned that it is re occuring. She's not feeling pain (yet) because the tooth has a root canal, but last night the abcess popped. I know, gross. So I have no idea how far the infection is at this point. |
Have they put her on antibiotics after the procedures? What about a crown to 'seal' that area...is that a possibility? If it burst, it may be ready to heal now (w/ antibios)...but if it's burst before, then all bets are off. Here is a link to the Amer Assoc of Oral Surgeons: American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) According to that assoc, and some googling just now...it looks like a Dentist is still the route...at least, that's what I gathered. I don't know just how helpful those dentist locators are (the 1-800 ones)...but maybe try that. I'd def go to a diff dentist though. I hope she gets this figured out soon, poor girl. |
I would go to an oral surgeon. |
I highly recommend essential lavendar oil for teeth and gum problems. Just brush with a drop or two on your toothbrush along with a tea tree oil toothpaste. Lavendar oil is a natural antibiotic and it works fast. It can be found at a health food store. |
I don't mind a dentist, but so many now also specialize and I want her to be sure to look for the right one so she does not have to be referred. Thank you for the advice and references. It's very much appreciated! The original injury happened when she was 10, and every 4-5 years something gets stirred up in there to cause problems. I don't understand why. She's 21 now. It's so frustrating!! She is supposed to be checking with the campus clinic and some of her professors that live in the area for references. Antibiotics have always been perscribed in the past. I guess I want it fixed once and for all! |
Did she go to a regular dentist, or an endodontist? If it were me, I would go to an endodontist for the initial consult, they are the experts on root canals and should do the more complicated cases. If they don't think they can repair the tooth, they will give her a referral to the surgeon to have the tooth extracted. |
They need to get her on antibiotics to help with the infection because if the infection is bad enough the tooth has to wait to be removed. If they remove it while infected they risk sepsis. |
An Endodontist may be the best way to go. I just wonder if she can get into one without a referral. Can a root canal still become abcessed? |

She needs to go to an endodontist. It's possible that when she had her original root canal done, her dentist missed one of the canals which is why it keeps abscessing. |
Endo for sure before that infection spreads. |
Apicoectomy! Ouch! Our dr. is referring her just based on her history and a phone consult with me. Apicoectomy |
Ouch is right, but it does look as if it might do the trick and also save the tooth. |

Well, I thought I would give y'all an update. My daughter went to the endo this morning for her consult visit. She does have to have the apicoectomy surgery. Apparently, the dr. who did her first surgery left some material in there he should not have (I remember that, he said it was an antibiotic gause to pack the cheek bone to help it heal and it would dissolve), and that is what is causing the infection. He told her it was one of the worst jobs he had ever seen and may have to have repair work done to her root canals once he gets in there. On a good note, she said he is young and good looking so that will make it a "little" easier. LOL. Thanks for all the replies... |
