This thread gave me a migraine and I didn't do anything but lend some emotional support. lol. |
Forcing America's youth to do math that they aren't ready to do just because somebody else could do better in college is not what I would want for my child.... This is one of several reasons why I would not put my child in public school. There is an incredible amount of pressure to perform as well as your classmates and IMO it's not healthy. I know for the most part teachers go into the profession for the right reasons, but something is just very wrong somewhere. Personally I'd like to see high school and even college students improve their English skills. We do peer review in English here. I was shocked to see that some people still don't know the difference between they're, their, and there - in a college English class. So a native English speaker can get out of high school without learning that sort of thing, but yet they have to be able to do 83x-75y=1/4xy-3/7y or the like? |

We are doing the beginning of algebra in the 5th grade here. But our school is on an advanced math program, I did algebra in the 9th grade but Jenna is doing it in the 6th grade which is why we bought the books I had mentioned and they are proving to be of great help! Mia's math skills are gone when we get beyond 2 treats... She basically only counts to one since that is what she is working on scoring at once. |

Granted Math is not for everyone. However given the fact that all our young kids growing up have an appreciation for high tech items such as laptop computers, apple Iphones, google, and such...its not surprising that math and science should be highly emphasized to our students. Yes english is important. No doubt about it. BUT...Companies such as Google are hiring graduates that excel in Math and problem solving logic. Most of these students speak english as their 2nd language yet does they prevent them from working on the development of the next Apple product? |

You have no idea how upsetting this particular area is right now as I head off to conferences. It would appear we are failing terribly on our grammar. Spell check has ruined an entire society! My children often fail to be able to spell rather simple words and the vocabulary has been lost. I have purchased them a dictionary and when there is a word they don't know I write it down in my planner and tell them look it up and then report back. I am hoping this helps. Frustrating |
I think one of the major problems today is all of the state assessments, and I believe all of the testing is really hurting education. In New York State, students take state assessments through eighth grade. Then they take Regents level courses which culminate in a state exam. I am fortunate enough to teach in a wonderful high school, and I don't think most teachers solely focus on the exams, but when schools are compared based upon the scores on these assessments and exams, too much emphasis is placed on them. There isn't enough time to focus on thinking skills and creativity if an assessment test is the focus. I was really saddened when my tenth grade resource room students took an advanced placement college level history course. They considered how successful they were in the course solely on the score they received rather than how much they had grown as students or what they had learned in the class. I agree about the importance of English, and skills have been breaking down for a long time. I think instant messaging and texting are really impacting written language, particularly spelling and punctuation. Many students are not reading much anymore, and that also hugely impacts written language ability. In spite of all of this, I see young people accomplish great things daily and I am so impressed by our student population. |
If your daughter needs more help with math, try Khan Academy It's a collection of video tutorials on math, etc by this very gifted teacher. If she doesn't understand an algebra concept, she can watch the corresponding video, several times if needed until she gets it. |

In math, you can do whatever you want to an equasion AS LONG AS you do it to both sides (of the equal sign). When solving for X, you want to get X by itself; so you're just manipulating the problem until you get that. If you have X+8=0, you can subtract 8 leaving X by itself, but then you have to also subtract 8 from the other side. X+8=0; X=-8 If you have 3X+4=0, you can subtract 4 to eliminate it on that side, but you must do it to the other side. Then divide by 3 to cancel with the 3 and you have X by itself. 3X+4=0; 3X=-4; X=-4/3 Her problem looks harder but it's the same concepts. They've already given you the value for Y so plug it in and you get 3/4x-8=(-1/2)-3. That might be the part she was stuck on. When you have a fraction (3/4) you need to multiply by what will make it become 1, which is (4/3). So just add 8 to both sides (getting rid of the 8)and multiply by (4/3) to cancel out (3/4) gives you X=6. If you enter it into a calculator: -.5-3+8 {ENTER} *4/3 :: 6 Hope that helps with other problems. :) |
Spelling..who needs spelling? My phone now hows auto-correct on it. I don't even use pen and paper anymore. Between spell check, auto-correct, and auto-complete...we just need to have an idea of how to spell the word and let the computers do the rest of the thinking. |
I went to my sons conferences last night and actually mentioned some of the conversation from this thread. What I remember it is something like over 10000 words are lost annually in our society as it continues. We are in an academic district and amazingly test well, we also are on a 4 day week. I actually love it. But you are right the phones auto correct, there is spell check and it seems people look at me as if foreign when I inquire if the paper is to be written ap blue. |

Sad but true. Ask any teenager how to spell a certain word. They will tell you that they may not be exactly sure how to spell it, but they can get it close enough and my auto-correct will get it right. Or I hear this alot....sometimes when I gets mixed up between texting and writing for my school class. I have to be careful not to get my text language confused with my class language. Bottom line...who needs proper english anymore when texting, tweets, and emails all use improper english anyways. |
