I was at a conference in Washington D. C. We were in a big meeting room and one of the organizers came in and said " the teacher's shuttle has exploded." For a moment I didn't realize he was talking about the Challenger. Then there was a collective gasp and many of us got up and left the room to see the news.
I didn't go back to the meeting that day. Instead, I wandered around the city. It was like an episode of the Twilight Zone. The normally crowded and noisy Mall was nearly empty and hushed.
That day, along with the day President Kennedy was shot and 9-11 will be in my memory forever.
A moment of silence for the seven astronauts who touched the face of God that terrible day. |
