Wine glasses Why would wine drinkers choose different styles of wine glasses according to the type of wine? Just wondering why...:confused: |
The same reason that certain beers have specific glasses you drink it from. (in Europe anyway), there is a certain way to properly drink beer/wine/even some liquers are supposed to be drank in certain ways. I know very little on this subject but it has been explained to me on the various wine tours I've been on. Unfortunatly they don't really start explanations until after I've had a few glasses. |
Mostly because different wines have different flavors and aromas and the different glasses maximize those qualities for each type of wine. Different wines have different 'bouquets' that develop once oxygen hits the wine. So, the shape/height of the glass helps the bouquet develop correctly. Also, the shape of the glass determines where the wine should 'land' in your mouth for ideal tasting of the wine. Some wines/champagnes (or prosecco) are meant to stay chilled...so in that case, you want a taller glass to let less heat escape the volume. YUM, CHAMPAGNE/PROSECCO!! :D |
I find that a good ol' styrofoam cup keeps my wine nice and chilled and it still tastes just fine!! :p Of course that's not in public! ;) |

Well, you got the taste of wine in my mouth, so I'm enjoying a nice sweet vino rosso :) but I'm drinking it from a brandy glass, lol :) I'm a total clutz and cant afford another broken wine glass, haha. |

I've really been stuck on this one Italian wine my friend likes. It's not all that pricey - maybe $17/bottle. Not something I can afford all the time but not the priciest out there for sure. It's called Valminor. |
I'm a wine lover myself - I don't have a grip on all the different glass types, but as another poster stated, they are to give proper aroma to different grapes. Each grape can get a different scent when presented the right way. I just drink wine with whatever glass is around. I don't go too much into the presentation - I enjoy it either way. |
Jelly jars, coffee mugs, plastic cups, whatever is handy some days. |
My Dad and I made chardonnay at a wine brewery here near me. It is delicious! One of the best ive had. I prefer white wine to red wine. This one is an australian chardonnay with hints of butterscotch! Yuuummmyyy!!! So for glasses, I'm moving up in the world of wine glasses, 2 glasses at a time. LOL I won't get into the long boring of how I found these glasses, all I can say is I found Riedel wine glasses and I can get them at William Sonoma for $25 a set of 2. Yes, they are pricey, they are the BEST glasses ever! I now own 4. Someday I'll own 8! LOL I have a thing for wine glasses, I love them, collect them and now own about 30+ but these Reidel are my faves. |
Gee - you guys are a bad influence on me:D Went and bought three bottles of wine today - I don't remember the last time I bought any wine! Now Sugarmamma needs to come over Sunday! (Also bought some Crunchie bars!!! -are you listening Lisa??;);)) |
my dh is the wine expert in my family! He likes south african wines (maybe because we were lucky to travel there and visit the wineries) and Ausie, Calf.... well somedays he really doesn't care as long as it is wine:eek: |
I haven't had any South African wines, or Australian wines. I've seen ads for Yellow Tail wine, but never been compelled to buy any. I haven't found a California wine I like. I always preferred German wines. I also like Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry and Sandemans port wine. Based on the thread on wines I bought two Moscato's yesterday - one was Moscato Asti, the other just "Moscato". I also bought a German Auslese. |

I have lots of different wine glasses, but recently am thinking about getting some of the stem-less ones with rounded bottoms. They look interesting, and less chance of getting knocked over like the traditional stem wine glasses. My favorite wine is Moscato... light and fruity and goes with everything. Probably not so popular with serious wine connoisseurs though. |
