Having Fillings Done First Time....SCARED TO DEATH! What do I expect? Will the needle shot hurt bad? Will the drilling bother me? HELP i'm terrified of doing this. |
Shots don't bother me much- so this is just the typical pinch at the beginning- then everything goes totally numb and you shouldn't feel anything again. :) The worst part is when your tongue is numb after for what feels like hours, its soo annoying! |

I think the worst part is when you are drooling while you talk to someone and don't know it, LOL :D |

Honestly, every injection I've had for fillings have been very painful (minus one time when the topical seemed to really work well), but it only lasts for a minute, then you won't feel much. This is coming from someone who doesn't mind needles much. Just raise your hand if there is a problem and they will give you another injection. The filling itself is not supposed to be painful. It may feel odd though. I'd rather have a filling than a cleaning. Hate my teeeth scraped and gums poked. If they ever want to fill one with gas only because it's not deep, think twice. That was very painful throughout the filling. |

I'll tell you this, when my daughter had a cavity in her baby tooth, I think she was about 4yrs old. (she has excellent teeth now, don't know what happened) anyway, we came out from the dentist, and not a kid's dentist, I asked her what the dentist did to her and she said ''he pinched me to make me pretty''. That was it. Just a pinch to a 4yr old. So, think of that and give it a whirl. If it hurts worse than that, tell him to stop and try something else like 'twilight sleep'. There are too many dentists out there offering '''painless dentistry'' to tolerate pain. Oh, my DD's experience was about 30yrs ago, when things were a wee bit more barbaric...LOL |
For the shot, you will feel s pinch but a good Dentist will apply some pressure to the area and will find the spot on the first attempt. You will not feel the drill, just hear the noise. I can't believe I never had a shot for a filling until I went into the Marine Corps. The pain I put up with. Could not do that now as Novacain is a wonder drug! You will do fine! |
uggg... i have a high pain threshold but i hate having my mouth messed with and my head jarred. i had to have this thing done to shave down between two teeth to straighten them and it didn't hurt but bothered me lots. whole head was jarring. wish me luck. going on the 6th for the fillings and the 10th for bottom braces...getting it done before it's baby make time :D |
I used to be a dental assistant. Please let the dentist and assistant know if you are nervous so they can be supportive. If you have any health concerns like diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies, please alert them to that. The dentist will use a topical gel to numb the area before the injection so that you won't feel it. The drilling won't hurt, although you will hear it. Just breathe slowly and deeply if you are feeling anxious. Good luck!!!! |
Having fillings in nearly every tooth and then six (so far) root canals, I can tell you the fear is much worse than the reality. A modern dentist will swab your gums with a topical anesthetic before they even give the shot. Most of the time I don't even feel the shot -- except as a slight pinch and some pressure. The shot doesn't last very long on me. I don't like to complain, so my dentist keeps an eye on me and offers another shot as soon as I begin to feel discomfort -- I'm a baby when it comes to dental pain. Definitely share your concerns with your dentist. A lot of them will give twilight sleep and/or offer to have you listen to music to help you relax. It'll be over before you know it. |
Wow -- you must have great teeth if this is your first filling! I think it depends WHERE the pain med is injected and the skill of the dentist. I have had some that do not hurt much at all and others hurt like crazy -- but only for a few seconds and then it is over. So, don't worry -- nothing you can't handle! |

The sanding down between teeth is WAY worse- I would rather get a filling any day ::shudders:: |
