Advice RE: school & family emergencies We just got a call from our daughter in law wanting us to go to the HS to pick up our grandson. Without going into too much detail I'll just say this...they wouldn't release him to us. They will only release the kids to a parent or guardian even with our 16 year old grandson standing right there saying we are his grandparents...I know, they have to be careful. The point or message I'm trying to get out is please parents, make sure you have an emergency contact, who is going to be available when you're not, on the approved list with the school for cases like this. Circumstances have changed in our son's home and normally our DIL would have been there to go get him but when things change you don't think to update details like the contact list at the school. So, our DIL will now be adding us to the list...just in case. |

I agree, I have custody of my brother and sister and they will no longer give them to my mom or grandma in a emergency. |
I always listed every adult family member in town, even ones I would not normally call. You never know when the one that usually lends a hand is unavailable or the subject of the emergency itself! Better to be safe and just list any and all that you would not mind picking them up in an emergency. |
It is interesting how schools are so different in different places. Here, they don't monitor who picks up high school students at all. In fact, all a parent has to do is call the school or send a written note to excuse them. No mention of "who" is picking them up, and the student leaves the building unattended and could get in the car with anyone. (and I am sure there are a lot of forged notes, and phone call impersonations going on too :D) But then again, here most students are driving themselves to and from school by the age of 16 so it would be extremely difficult to monitor who the kids are leaving with. I don't know the size of your school, but ours is somewhere around 1000 kids. Honestly however, I am glad to hear they have this kind of security in place. |
Nice advice. I think we should give at least five contacts numbers other then parents to avoid problems like this. Quote:
