Chickens in the front yard.
 
I dont know if its me...or is this just really strange??

I noticed a few days ago that my neighbor across the street from me now has chickens ....she put them in her front yard....right where the sidewalks ends going onto her property. It is so weird...i have never seen chickens in the front yard. Especially since i'm on a pretty busy street and people walk and drive by all the time. My first concern was that someone could steal them! Then the chicken pen isnt even high off the ground. And its only surrounded by cheap chicken wire. We live in a fairly wooded area and I'm pretty sure those chickens are going to get eaten by foxes!! I just really feel bad for the chickens.:(

I have a mutt and I know he will go for those chickens. Maybe a friendly conversation or note saying a good large cage might keep them safer.

You should check and see if there are any ordinances restricting people from keeping chickens in your area.

12 Gauge Shotgun with some #7 Birdshot will solve that problem! We have Peacocks here, but they are grandfathered in the Subdivision. One just can't go building a Chicken Coop

I did call the town hall clerk's office who then transferred me to the board of health director who then said to call the animal control officer . I dread calling her cause i've dealt with her before and well lets just say...she's lazy!

People walk their dogs all the time up and down our street. I'm afraid that if a dog eats the chickens...now the dog is going to get blamed for something that could have been prevented.

The one good thing is that the board of health director said if I have trouble with the animal control officer to just give him a call back. I think he knows she can be lazy LoL

good keep calling untill you get an answer because in a lot of residential areas there are restrictions on keeping livestock animals

Too funny! I was thinking the same thing! They would be good in Chicken and dumplins...lol Sorry...the country coming out in me!:D

We had a peacock in the neighborhood when we first moved here. I told my husband one day, "There's a peacock drinking out of the bird bath!" He did not believe me, but he came to look -- sure enough a peacock stood flat-footed drinking away.

Don't you love their shrill call? Being a little facitious there as their call can get quite annoying. DH and my son could immitate it perfectly. Here it is for those that might not have a peacock in the neighborhood: Peacock.wav

Ours disappeared. We had a wild boar problem for a bit and thought they might have gotten the peacock. One of the neighbors coordinated a hunting party and the wild boar are gone now too. Still have deer, possum and armadillos (I'm currently at war with the latter! They are making a mess of my front yard!) Ah, living in the backwoods is fun......

Damn Deb, you live in paradise. Wild Boar, Peacocks, etc. Peacocks can fly. Takes them a while for liftoff, but they are up in the large trees across from me as I type. Occasionally we lose one to a Coyote, but they are quite tough, especially in the Chicago winters. They are noisy for sure, especially during mating season. Maxine chases them out of the yard, Carlo ignores them. if I leave my garage door open, they will walk into it and take a .....well, you know. They also will try to mate with Black cars, and really do a job on the paint. Glad I do not have a black car!

I just can not even imagine what that would look like and why a peacock would think it needed to get busy with car. Back in the day there were a few matings in a black car.........but that's an entirely different story. :cool:

Where you are the chickens might be considered *odd* - in our subdivision most of the lots are over an acre so it's not unusual to see a few chickens. Years ago when our son was in FFA we kept some really fine Astrolops (big pretty chickens):D

One benefit of chickens, they will help keep snakes out of your yard....if snakes are a problem.

LoL I dont think its odd to have the chickens. I just thinks its odd where she has them. She has this huge yard and she put them in the front of the yard where anyone could just take them. Granted, i do live in the suburbs and having chickens isnt a common family pet around here LoL

Ahh...I see....yes...the front yard is a little more than odd:)

It's funny you mentioned chickens as a family pet. I do remember a few years back, hearing that some in NY apartments were finding pet chickens to be better suited for them than dogs or cats. I just couldn't imagine snuggling with a chicken...but...hey, who knows?!?!:D
