Quick, Make Me Feel Better (Abscessed Tooth) Ok, so long story short. I have a dentist appt in an hour. I have to get my teeth cleaned (no biggie there), but I also have something weird going on with my front tooth, I think. Maybe an abscess or something. Don't know, never had one before. It's almost like a blister on my gum that has sprung up in the past week and yesterday, this is gross, it was draining out this pus stuff. Blech! I am so paranoid about teeth anyway--I am a total 'give me gas for this' dental patient--and I'm super nervous about what they are going to tell me. Of course, I'm imagining the worst...root canal or having to pull my tooth or something! I've never had anything wrong w/ my teeth other than one lone cavity on a molar, so I'm in panick mode right now. :( |
Oh, gosh! That's terrible. I hope it isn't a gum disease. A tooth infection can usually be fixed. Sending you best wishes. |
It may be something as simple as an infection. If any food is stuck between it, your gum will swell and drain like that. When they clean it, they could get it out if that's what it is. Once the food is removed, the pocket will drain more, but go down in a day or two. I hope it's noting major and they can take care of it today. |
Yup, that's an abscess. It forms a blister on the gum to drain the pus. I've had a few after a bad crown job (dentist from h*ll) and they always needed a root canal. A healthy tooth does not abscess. |
Oh, I so sorry, let us know how it turns out. I just noticed the time, I guess you've already gone. I was going to try to make a lame joke about a vampire tooth sprouting, but you're probably not in the mood. Hope things go well for you. |
Hope you are feeling better. If it is at the gum, I doubt you will need a root canal. That is all inside the tooth root, then again, I am not allowed to practice dentisty. Thank God for that! |
Calm down! (That helped didn't it?:D) They'll probably just have a look-see, x-ray and send you home on antibiotics today. That way you get to come home and freak out some more! But we'll be here for ya! Let us know what he says.... maybe it's just a sore or pimple type thing. |

The infection actually forms at the root tip when the pulp of the tooth abscesses, not inside the tooth. The pressure builds up until a small hole forms on the gum to drain the pus. I don't practice dentistry either, but have unfortunately had firsthand experience with it recently. |
I had an abscess on my top front tooth and I had bad sinus pain and a dull ache feeling. My dentist did a root canal and because it is a front tooth and only has one root it wasn't bad at all. I hope it was just a sore and not an abscess. The bright side is id happened before Thanksgiving and not on. |
I have to agree w/ Lady mom, sorry:( You're lucky to have only one filling in your life I'm every dentist and orthodontics poster child!!! They look good on the outside, it's all that stuff they see on X-rays... Now they tell me i need braces AGAIN:( AND that I have signs of "blunting" of the root, which is caused mostly by orthodontic's, yet braces causes the problem and braces CAN HELP fix this???:rolleyes::cool: |
And the verdict is......abscess. Just got the first half of a root canal and have to go back in 2 weeks to have it finished up. :( Bummer. Dentist said it was odd because there was no sign of a cavity or decay, and was probably due to trauma, even years ago. I did get hit in the mouth once during cheerleading--had to have surgery way back then. Darn it...it has come back to haunt me again! Oh well, this sucks, but at least now I know. |

I have had several root canals, all in the back. Nothing worse than a tooth ache, and the pain goes away, never to return. I never had pus dripping though from the area, all internal. How it happend and why it happens is a mystery. Glad you know and you will soon be pain free. |
Thanks all! Forgive me...I am a big wuss when it comes to the dentist. |
