HELP - Orphaned Baby Rabbits Long story short...my neighbor just found a nest(?) of baby rabbits in her yard. Looks like there are about 4, eyes not open yet not extremely tiny, etc etc. I called AL Wildlife Rescue, but they are only open for another 30 min. I had to leave a message, but who knows if they are going to call back! :( I can take them into the center in the morning, but what the heck do we do with them until then!? I don't know if they will survive without eating that long, what they would eat, etc. I need some advice. My heart can't just leave them there all night. |
It has been years ago, but DH was mowing hay and ran over a nest of babies. The mother did not survive. He brought them home to me and I fed them the milk replacer for baby kittens with a medicine dropper every 2 hrs until the were big enough to suck a bottle. They survived and we released them into the wild when they got big enough. Good luck |
I got in touch with the lady that does small mammal rescue for the area and she will be meeting up with either myself or my husband in the morning to get them. She said that for tonight, they will be ok left in the nest, just to make sure they are in a safe area so that nothing else can get to them. My neighbor and I are going to go set up a barracade of sorts to keep them safe. This has made me absolutely SICK and I am so mad at Flash that I could just spit! |
Awww, poor babies. I could not leave them either. But who is Flash? Did I miss that??? |
Flash is our Basset (see avatar). She was in our back yard at the time. She killed the momma. :( |
I get so mad at my Westie when he kills something too. It just infuriates me but I guess we can't always overcome their natural instinct. Good luck with the baby rabbits. |

Yeah, guess you can't blame a hound for being a hound. :( But I am still so mad I can't even look at her! They told us to put an "X" out of grass over the nest on the off chance that it wasn't the mom and she comes back. So I will be checking in the AM and if the "X" hasn't been disturbed, then we will be meeting up. On a positive note, she said that they have a rabbit rescue that has a very HIGH success rate of caring for orphaned babies and releasing them. :) |
I was just about to ask if you knew for sure that the momma died, then I saw your post. Were I use to live, we had wild bunnies everywhere. We were advised to leave them alone as sometimes momma bunnies run off for food so the babies aren't abandoned. If we suspected a dead momma, we were told to make an X with some sticks over the entrance to the nest. If the X was moved, then momma came back to check on the nest. But if the X was neatly still there for hours, the babies were on their own and we should call a rescue. I hope those little ones stay safe till the morning. HAHA! Misty, you and I posted the same thing at the same time! |
Are they the cute little cottontail kind? Or more of a jackrabbit? |
I feel bad because rabbits have only recently started hanging around our house. I actually thought about putting up some mesh to keep them out because we have one of those privacy fences with offsetting boards. But ONLY on the side that neighbor's house. I thought, "nah, that boarders her yard...no need." :( |
