is fasting good for health? i am taking a nutrition class right now. today the instructor said that fasting is not good/beneficial for health, which i think is kind of odd. i've done some research online regarding fasting before, and the info. i gathered was that fasting is in fact good for your health, and if you fast one day a week, it can be really good for you. that makes sense to me because i think fasting gives your system a break. when animals are sick, they tend to fast and it seems to help them heal. does anyone have good info. on this topic? i need to do some research again, last time i looked up this info. was a couple of years ago. |
I don't know but I personally believe that it is good to fast but only for a couple of days to clean your system and get the bad stuff out. However it depends how you do it, and it must only be a short time. |
I think fasting is bad for you. Anytime you eat less the 1000 calories your system starts to break down, you lose muscle first because muscle requires the most calories to survive. Ten pounds of fat need hardly any calories to stay on your body; ten pounds of muscle needs lots of calories, so your body goes into survival mode and gets rid of muscle first. Each time you lose muscle, your metabolism slows, so you end up needing few calories then you did before. I always recommend people eat a little even when they are sick; to avoid losing muscle. Women, who go on starvation diets, are setting themselves up for failure. Your nutritionist is telling you about science and what scientific research has proven, she's not trying to sell you something. Remember, popular ideas aren't necessary truthful ideas. However, I don't think you should force a dog to eat during certain illnesses, for example, acute pancreatitis, at that point you are suppose to give the system a rest, but this isn't really the same as fasting. |

i did some research, and i found out that fasting is not the best way to detox your system or to give your digestive track a rest. the best way is to do a juice fast or only eat veg and fruits for a day a week or a day a month. that way you are still giving your body a chance to detox because it doesn't have to work so hard to digest the hard to digest foods, but at the same time, you are giving your body the nutrients and fuel it needs. i wonder what is the equivalent for dogs. how do you give their digestive system a break? :D |
I'm doing the Lemon detox diet right now and I'm on day 6 and feel great, I still exercise everyday so I shouldn't lose any muscle, I've lost 2 kg already and have 4 days to go, anyway I'm not doing it only to lose weight, I have been feeling bloated and unwell after eating for quite a while and decided the best option was to fast to clear my body of toxins and the formula I have every day is full of the minerals etc that the body needs to keep going, and it is filling enough not to make me feel hungry. I have had a lot of people saying it's bad but then I have had others that agree with the diet so I think only time will tell if I'm hurting myself. It's not a real fast but pretty close no solid food at all. |

it's human nature to want to be lazy (aka. efficient :p) people WANT to believe there is a quick fix, and marketers know that, therefore they just tell people what they want to hear; what they want to believe. |

Dont ever stop eating! It's very bad for your body. Instead, make your portions smaller. Losing mucsle mass is not good because when you begin to eat normal your body will store it as fat. That fat will come on with a vengeance! Notice, when an animal is dying it will stop eating. Drink 6 to 8 bottles of water a day to hydrate and no coffee or chocolate! Very dehydrating! Yay for nutrition classes! I don't have the scientific answer (although my nutrition teacher would say if it is peer reviewed, it's on pubmed and everything else is hear-say). I don't think it's going to hurt to fast once in awhile. But I really don't think it's good for you. Just think of the amount of carbohydrates the brain needs a day...130g. How are you getting that if fasting (even averages out over a week) if you are fasting for a week? If people don't feel well when they eat and thus want to take a break, then perhaps there is a medical issue going on or they are eating the wrong things... And a lot of people fast (aka detox) to lose weight. Well, such a reduction in calories is going to result in weight loss, but there are probably healthier ways to go about it. We need nutrients to survive and withholding them doesn't seem like a good thing to be doing to our cells! Nutritionist wanted to make a point to the class. So he first went over the vitamins recognized in science: A, B, C, D, E, K. Then he pulls up a site for vitamin O. lol. So much on the internet isn't science at all. It's opinion. |
